possible mod. short shifter - 17/11/2019 22:11

Hello .
I'm trying to figure out if I can perform the famous short shifter modification.
coupe 20vt 1998.
normally from this gearbox I should easily be able to modify the crank.
but having had an engine replaced by the previous owner, I would not like to have any nasty surprises.
how can I check if I have the requirements?
already checked the n. frame, okey.
do I need to access the gearbox from under the battery?
I became aware of this mod. in a discussion on the forum.

thank you all .

This works on early gearbox

Re: possible mod. short shifter - 18/11/2019 08:41

Then I misunderstood.
Can you do it on the first gearbox models and not on the next ones?

Re: possible mod. short shifter - 18/11/2019 08:49

Also on the 4h tech website they say it is for the models following the n. Of frame 0052505.
Sorry, maybe yours was a question, if it's possible on the first gearboxes?

Sorry forgot to put this

https://www.totallyalfa.com/shop/cl...quick-shift-kit-gtv-v6-155-v6-q4-models/

I’ve got one on my Alfa 155 with a coupe 20vt engine and gearbox in it as it’s a early gearbox

Re: possible mod. short shifter - 18/11/2019 12:11

Interesting. chinny
Would this then fit the 20vt gearbox?
Would that be the one in the figure below from £ 33.07? love

Re: possible mod. short shifter - 18/11/2019 12:39

carmine, your first picture is for the early type, for the short shift it's a simple modification (cut/weld) to relocate the joint closer to the pivot/clamping point. Only suitable on early type 5 speed boxes.

The second picture is for the later type 5 speed and 6 speed gearboxes. As per the second picture, check your VIN to see which type you need, but you say you have a 1998 model, so you should need the later type. 8198cthomas's link is to a rather complicated looking early version, no good for you

This is my vin.
I'm not understanding much anymore. crazy

Re: possible mod. short shifter - 18/11/2019 13:14

So yours should have a later gearbox, but you mentioned that you had an engine change. The easiest way to tell what type of gearbox you now have is to lift off the cover around the gear stick (undo the popper, pull apart the sides/velcro, push down on the bottom edges of the cover/frame, then remove upwards). Then look at the shaft of the gear stick, the early type has a steel tube, the later type has a black plastic tube.

Re: possible mod. short shifter - 18/11/2019 16:24

Yes, that is the later type as expected. So you want something like this

or (rather more expensively)

Re: possible mod. short shifter - 18/11/2019 19:23

Thanks Dave for the clarification.
From what I understand I could use the first one of the alfa romeo.
But I should add a balancing weight.
I looked for n. 60653067 which would be the weight shown in the picture but I can't find anything.
Looking at other images on the alfa romeo eper I found other balancing weights ranging from 600 grams to 870 grams for example on the alfa166 (n. 60623949) we have a weight of 855grammi.
How could we understand what weight to adapt to a 20vt coupe?
The problem is that I can't find any of these balancing weights.
Without creed it wouldn't work well.

Re: possible mod. short shifter - 18/11/2019 19:46

The totallyalfa later quickshift uses the std weight on the gearbox lever. I’ve got one on my coupe 20vt and my Alfa Gtv v6 which are ok
I’ve got a mtech quickshift on my Alfa 156 Gta it’s a little bit better but costs a lot more

Re: possible mod. short shifter - 18/11/2019 20:25

then totallyalfa will be fine.
I'll take that.
I thought maybe to adapt a small weight.
Thank you all for the answers.
As soon as I apply the mod.
I will post photos and info.

Re: possible mod. short shifter - 25/11/2019 14:50

Hi Carmine

I have 2 gearbox out (1 C630 and 1 C530) and both have the same shifter.

I took 2 pics of the C630 shifter; the mod is not so easy as explainded here:

https://www.short-shifters.com/c630-shift-for-alfa-romeo-fiat-lancia.html

maybe I'm wrong but to make the mod on my gearbox I have to extract the lever and then cut and weld the spherical joint more near to the rotation axis

thanks for everyone help

note: my car is 1997 so the stock gearbox was a 3 cable version; now I have 2 cable version

Re: possible mod. short shifter - 25/11/2019 15:54

I copied the totallyalfa one as I already had a ball joint lying around.

carmine, I used the original weight off the existing shifter - you might find it a bit heavy, it depends on what you like but it's an OK starting point.

Re: possible mod. short shifter - 25/11/2019 21:11

Ok
Now it's all clear.
I just have to decide whether to modify the original, cutting the ball joint is to weld it closer to the point of rotation.
Or buy a totallyalfa.
Can you explain to me how to remove the shifter from the gearbox?
Thanks.

You don't need to. You pull off the ball / socket cable end from the gear leaver ccable. The totallyalfa sits over the original ball joint and the bolt holding on the weight keeps it in place. Then push the ball / socket cable connector onto the new totallyalfa ball joint. Job done and the great thing is it can all be put back to normal if you don't like it.

Re: possible mod. short shifter - 25/11/2019 21:44

This is magnificent.
It took me some time to figure it out but now it's clear.
And a great system.
Thank you all for the clarifications.
This forum and its users are really great.

Re: possible mod. short shifter - 03/12/2019 21:29

this is Totally Alfa short shifter arrived today and just installed

the stroke is now very reduced and seems that the gears are not fully inserted, the lever is only little more hard to move

it properly do what promised...

Re: possible mod. short shifter - 05/05/2020 23:21

Hi I wanted to update you with the latest changes.
I finally got to install the short shifter of the Totally alfa, but I was not lucky at the beginning, I had to remove a small portion of the metal from the weight of the gearbox, I don't know why but it didn't fit automatically, but now it's okey and it's really better from my point of view, nice short and stiff, before it was simply too soft and long.

I have a question that has nothing to do with the short shifter but with the lever, for some time I have noticed that putting the gear lever in neutral, it has a right / left play of a few centimeters, is this normal?
Thanks.

Carmine that play you describe could be a worn plastic bush on the nylon base, if you lift the leather gaiter you should have access to see.
