Boot seal replacement - 27/03/2013 12:15

Howdy all,

My boot seal has seen much better days...iv had a search round previously on the forum and seen that some people pad them out with wiring etc, but this hasnt worked for me frown

I'm wondering if anyone has a tried/tested aftermarket replacement they know to fit/seal correctly ?

cheers cool

I have bought some cheap 10mm silicone tubing to stuff down the middle ( the stuff currently in there is only 5-6 ), hoping this will do the trick, if not i'll buy the seal as recommedned above laugh

Internal diameter was 2mm with the external 6mm. Was fine.
Any bigger externally and I think you'll struggle to get it into the old seal. You also do not want it to stand too proudly that the boot struggles to close. Mine needs a firmer hand to shut now proving its sealing more efficiently. Definate improvement in reducing condensation also as before my boot liner on the lid was very damp.

So how much do I need in length and the 2mm internal diameter stuff? Ta

Update for this now its been on over a couple of months - So we're out of the worst of winter now but I now get Zero/Nil/Nilch/Nought condensation anymore on my rear screen and interior is dry thumb smile Anyone with Steamy windows - this is the fix....

Been having a good read through the forums trying to fix several of the small issues with my car. One of which was a damp and moldy boot. I purchased the above Silicone Vacuum Hose Pipe as mention by Nello. After a few weeks and all the weather we've had recently its completely dry and no mold. So if anyone else has this prob, well recommended! A cheap fix for £6.
A much more solid feel when you shut the boot aswell

I have been getting condensation on my rear window and damp/mould on the boot lid lining lately.

I've bought some of this in 2mm internal diameter size.

So can I just feed this into the existing original boot seal (which seems in decent condition)? Will it go in an original seal? Anything else I should know or any tricks about getting it in? I assume I have to take the old seal off, get this tubing fed through it somehow then put the seal back on.

Just take the seal off and then push the pipe through the internals of the seal. Might take two people though as it gets stuck as you push it through (well it did with me) One person pushes it while the other person encourages the pipe by wiggling it around!

Makes the boot shut like a german car, much more solid. Don't do what I did, take the seal off and then shut the boot.

A bit of vaseline on the tubing....

Re: Boot seal replacement - 16/02/2014 16:25

Thanks for the advice all. Got this job done today. Getting the tubing into the seal took a while and I didn't have any vaseline either. First 1/4 went in fine, then it got hard. Best way I found was to push about half an inch to an inch (as much as I could) into the seal and then wiggle/shake the seal to make the tubing settle a little further inside the seal. After a lot of wriggling and pushing tiny bits in at a time, eventually it was all the way through. laugh

I thought about cutting the tubing at one point and feeding the remainder in from the other end, but decided to persevere as if I used 2 pieces, if I ever wanted to remove the tubing I could lose the ends inside the seal.

Job all done, now to see if it helps stop mould growing on the inside boot lid cover and if the rear windscreen stops getting moisture on the inside of it.

james I've also added a rubber seal strip along the rubber edging on the bottom of the rear screen - where it meets the boot. Will post a photo asap. Pretty sure its helped as well though its been so darn wet recently I need it to completely all dry out before confirming.
