Mine have always been easy, all you need is a big socket - 32mm iirc. Might be smaller but its a big nut!

If you have an early sixteen, the nut is on the inside of the car and the stub goes through the bearing; you'll need a hex drive to lock it.
If you have a twenty, then the nut is on the outside and the stub stays where it is.

You need a big torque wrench to set the new bearing.

Indeed - it's something on the order of 300lbs/ft. Can't recall the exact figure at the moment.

Just shy at 280. Which means you really need 3/4 inch gear to do the job.

Re: Rear wheel bearing - 14/07/2014 20:33
Just found the "how too" which has pictures but I'm confused by people saying on early 16v ( which mine is )that the hub nut is on the other way round and I would need a large Allen key to get it off
Can someone please explain to this numpty what this means

Re: Rear wheel bearing - 15/07/2014 06:36
Imagine a big nut and bolt - it's all it is. On the more common 20v, like most other cars, the bolt pokes through the swing arm from the inside, the bearing slips over the end, and the nut follows it.
On the more exclusive 16v, the bolt is the other way around. It goes through the bearing first, with the head on the outside, then through the swing arm, and the big nut lives on the other side of the swing arm.
Because it can turn, you need to hold the outside of the nut while you loosen/tighten it - that outside holdfast in the head of the bolt is a hex socket.
So you need an allen key, *and* a big socket. I thought I had some pictures somewhere of mine but they're hiding from me.

Re: Rear wheel bearing - 22/07/2014 20:23
It's a 32mm socket for the rears, but you also need a big torque wrench to fasten them back up.

I've got one somewhere you can use.
I hade trouble on one side with the socket slipping off so I put the new nut supplied with it on as well. it kept the socket in place and straight and was able to loosen the nut with ease. I'm off Thursday if you want to use it.
