exhaust replacement - 05/11/2019 15:06

Hi
I've been lurking around here for a few years now (not posted much, if any )
I'm owner of a 16v y2k and my back exhaust dropped off this weekend, will weld it as a quick bodge but was looking for a replacement
has anyone used the Ebay exhausts? for instance the Gerlach one on ebay and I was wondering if it was any decent? not too boomy?

ebay exhaust

and I know there is a difference between the 16v 1.8 and the 2.0 but can weld so should be fixable
I use my car as a daily and am more into the 60ties classics so don't wanna put too much money into it tbh, but it needs to be a bit decent.
Thx in advance
cheers
Guido

Not seen those Gerlach ones but the IMASAF ones are very well made for steel ones (possibly OEM):

2.0. 16V - 27.67.09
1.8. 16V - 27.66.09 https://www.daparto.de/Teilenummernsuche/Imasaf/276609?categoryId=696&kbaTypeId=11855

I got one of the Toyosports stainless exhausts for my 20VT, very happy with the result.

True, but still only about a tank of petrol more. They are very well made and I get 6-7 years out of them even with my typical short journey pattern which is not good for exhausts. The Gerlach ones appear to be made cheaply in Poland. There are really mixed reviews on German forums. For the price difference and the lack of positive reviews on the Gerlach, I would take the known one.

Thx for the link Grigio, but would like st stay away from the boomy sports type ones, my wife uses the car so dont want a boomy sports

and Niel, you can buy a coupe for 10 tanks of petrol, but that is beside the point

I did a proper fix on mine, so will last me quite some time again (i hope)
but can't imagine that nobody has used this one, or similar cheap ones that are on ebay, surely I'm not the first one to see these

It would be good though if there are some reviews of our own on the different brands
so the Gerlach and other boxed 80 pounds types
MTS, which seems to be a one piece for 110
the imaf for 180 and the more expensive ones (which are provided by the same bulk autoparts lot and might just as well be poor quality, the bigger they'll get margin because of the name the better business concept)

btw has anyone looked at the brava mid/end silencer, looks very much similar to the smaller coupe ones and at half the price

I have used cheap exhausts on other cars and they have rusted through within 2-3 years. Known brands like IMASAF and Bosal last way longer so for me it is cheaper in the long run to buy decent exhausts and spend less time redoing the same job. So less than double the price but I would expect more than double the life. So it depends what one is looking for.

There aren't that many Coupe owners left that are keen enough to report on their experiences. Exhaust reviews are not likely to be that forthcoming frown

A 2000€ Coupe will probably also need many parts renewing before it is in a reasonable, usable condition. I have been toying with buying a Barchetta but all the ones near me have been cheap (2-4000€) and tatty. An exhaust, like petrol is a running cost so the average market value is not a reasonable comparison.

But as you say, yours is up and running again so you are good for now.

Hi Guido,

I've just noticed that you've PM'd me on the subject so yes I can recommend the Gerlach. I got one last year as a stop gap before I get a SS and got it fitted by a specialist whilst I was getting other work done. It was an easy fit apparently and required no additional work from the garage. Been fine for the past 18 months with no annoying vibrations etc. Go buy yes

Removed my Toyosports and replaced with a standard as the Toyosports was extremely boomy around 2000 RPM. Very intrusive and tiring!

Have you considered the cybox exhaust, sporty but not boomy smile

This isn’t much help, as I think I got the last one, but I’ve got a miltek stainless cat back one. It adds performance and is a little louder but not intrusively and the end tip is almost like the original. Maybe miltek still have specs to make a new one! Just a thought.

Rebranded Peco. Think Cybox took over Peco when Peco went belly up.

I love my Toyosports, I often turn off the stereo and wind the windows down so I can listen to it. With the windows up and music playing I have to concentrate to here it. A little extra grunt was added to the pedal as well.

Just replaced my original exhaust over the weekend after 195K miles with a Toyosports, I must say love the sound not too loud though, I just can’t help putting my foot down every time I go under a bridge and listen to that sound......WOW

Bought my standard exhaust for 20VT from Online Automotive. Double skinned baffled with two boxes. Extremely quiet - much better than that annoying Toyosports (driving me mad). £180 + fittings if required. Its a quality exhaust, not the kwik-Fit (quick fall-off) budget variety!
Some seem to like boomy exhausts some don't. I am very sensitive to low frequency boom so find it annoying after a while. After all, the main function of an exhaust is to suppress this noise and a straight through exhaust won't do this properly and would also be relatively cheap to manufacture.
The car manufactuerer has invested considerable research in tuning an exhaust for the correct back pressure and damping and I am not sure the aftermarket ones are nearly so good in this respect.
They may of course last longer if stainless, but I have never had an issue with a standard exhaust on any vehicle within around 8 years, as long as its of the original quality. Just avoid the cheap copies (which last 3 years at the most and are also much noisier).
