OBD code readers......

OBD code readers...... - 01/09/2009 23:10

I was looking into code readers etc on the net & came accross the this, apparently it's a pee easy self made adaptor harness that will allow a DTC reader with the standard 16 pin OBD connector (post 2001) to connect to the Fiat 3 pin SuperSeal connector, subsequently being able to correctly read the DTC's

surely this is nonsense...? (well for the coupe anyway) else everybody would be doing it crazy

This is what I found:

to connect the 3 pin fiat connector to a 16 pin obd2 connector you need 4 lengths of wire. use 3 lengths of wire to connect the 3 pin connector to the obd connector. also use 1 length of wire for power to the obd connector.

on the 16 pin obd2 connector use the following pins
4- chassis ground (connect to ground on 3 pin connector, or any good chassis earth)
5- signal ground (connect to black wire pin on 3 pin connector)
7- k line (connect to white wire pin on 3 pin connector)
16- 12vDC (connect to battery positive terminal

That would be here? http://www.fiatforum.com/lets-talk-fiat/98934-making-obd-fiat-connector.html

He's quite right; it's the same approach I'm using now I no longer make microwidgets. I modify existing 401.1 KKL OBD adaptors so they can be used either with an OBD car (VAG group uses that OBD format) or with the Fiat group pre-obd Magneti Marelli ECUs.

Depending on the age of the car, it may speak OBDII, or it may not; you'll need different code for each. I have free code coupe 16v and 16vt here: http://www.nailed-barnacle.co.uk/coupe/startrek/startrek.html and I can supply for the single-point-injection Fire engine used in MK1 punto, 500, 600 and a Y.

Check the FAQ for the microwidget...

Re: OBD code readers...... - 02/09/2009 07:18

Yes thats where I saw it smile

Mine is a 97/P 20VT, would that be OBDII ?

So I can buy a relativley cheap OBDII reader & make this adaptor harness to read the ECU fault codes.? or is there more to it than that?.

If it's possible I would like to have a go at this, as I can no way afford any expensive equipment & I intend to keep my current coupe for a couple of years at least, so it would be worth it

BTW, I am a time served electronics technician & will easily tackle any adaptor harness & have access to components & soldering/PCB equipment if I need to make up a PCB etc from a schematic.

Only thing I haven't got too much experience with is vehicle diagnostic systems, esp this one! frown

No, none of the 20vt are compatible with OBD. They use a Bosch system which - as far as I know - only the commercial (Snap-on, Sykes Pickavent, and a couple of others) readers and the Widget can talk to.

I am looking at modifying the 'star trek' code for the 409.1 KKL readers to work with the 20vt, but have not yet done much work on it; it's not as straight forward as just asking for values. There's a complex and time critical packet protocol which is required, and which I have had trouble working with in the Windows domain for various reasons.

However, I have just written a console version of the 16v code reader which simplifies the structure of the program significantly, and I have hopes for it.

(If you're an FCCUK club member, there's a widget available for hire at reasonable rates).

Oh right, thanks for that. Yea Bosch ECU's aint they blush aren't they similar to Autoliv..?

Are you currently selling any batches of Widgets?

Not at the moment, J. Sorry; there are a couple being built now which use the last of the parts but I've got too much else going on to do more.

Barnacle,
How many new requests for widgets would you need to make it viable to produce a new batch (if you're up for it)?

Spookly

Spookly, around a dozen or so. But the problem is time; I'm not only working full time, I'm doing the thesis for an open university master's degree, and flying the paraglider or model glider when the weather's right.

It might get quieter after the exams in October but no promises.

Hello,

I found this thread and wanted to ask. My diagnostic socket has white/red nr 3, black/violet nr 2, blue/white nr 1 wires.
So is thic connection correct?

4- chassis ground (connect to ground on 3 pin connector, or any good chassis earth) NR 3 white/red
5- signal ground (connect to black wire pin on 3 pin connector) NR 2 BLACK/violet
7- k line (connect to white wire pin on 3 pin connector) NR1 white blue

I am trying to make fiat 3 pin adapter, as I have connectors smile

Re: OBD code readers...... - 22/02/2011 20:11

No.

If you've got three wires on the connector, you have a 16v or 16vt (the 20v/vt has only two, in the same connector).

Chassis and signal ground (4 and 5) go to the centre (2) - they're probably internally connected in the OBD adaptor anyway.

7 - K and 15 - L are both required - they go to 1 and 3 on the Fiat connector. I can't remember which is which but if you get it wrong you won't hurt anything, just need to swap them around.

You will probably need to power the adaptor from vehicle electrics, too - pin 16.
