Help me choose a private plate

Help me choose a private plate - 16/03/2012 18:24

Hi Guys

With the imminent sale of one of my coupés, I've decided to treat the other to a private plate. I've never had one before. It's not because I want to appear 'flash', rather I think the car would have more of a timeless look without an age-related registration.
I don't want to pay more than £300-£350 tops. My initials are 'MJB' and if I could get '20V' or '20VT' in there somewhere then that would be cool. If I can get it in budget that is! Alternatively something like 'Pinin' would be cool. Once I found 'P1NL1N' however it seems to have gone frown
Can you find any good ones? cool Anyone selling their coupé related plate?

unless your a coupe is an X-reg, which is pretty damn rare .. that is a no-no .. you can't put a private plate on a car to make it look younger than it actually is. (older plates are ok)

I had C20VTP on my old Plus and i'm not one for personnal plates but it looked the business and hides the age.

Re: Help me choose a private plate - 16/03/2012 20:31

I think Mark used "X" as a placeholder duncan, hence the use of speechmarks and the plural.

Re: Help me choose a private plate - 16/03/2012 21:11

I got a private reg for my Alfa Matt. On thing that let the coop down was it's 'R' reg plate. Quite a few people after being impressed by it would comment on it's age when they saw the plate. crazy

I found a cracking site (cant find it now) which had a sort of grid of all the numbers and letters available. I found a plate I wanted then went to the DVLA site. put the same numbers in and got it about 200 quid cheaper! So when you do find what you want go to DVLA and see if it's available there.

I've got M20 VTC on my mooney. M20 VTP would stand out as Mooney 20VT Plus - go for it. Oh and your alloys are looking great on mine.

Same reg as on the DVLA sites but cheaper.

Tell him a few numbers or letters and he will have loads to choose from.

Seriously though,i havent found anyone better on price+he sorts it all out for you with log book tax and mot for no extra charge.
Make sure you haggle as well as hes always willing to knock a few shillings off the price.
I got mine for £280 all in iirc, which is about the price of a tank of fuel these days.

Re: Help me choose a private plate - 16/03/2012 23:34

I always use DVLA site,

Custard got K2OUP and Blueberry is K3OUP both cost £250 (before VAT increase). I wanted no more than 5 digits for a small front plate.

It's easy to do change, just buy from DVLA they send you certificate, then go to your local DVLA office with certificate, V5 and MOT and they order you new V5, print you a new MOT and give you an authority letter to put new plates on, you don't have to pay a transfer fee when bought from DVLA (not sure about other suppliers).

I bought plates as wife said the original plate "aged the car".

Re: Help me choose a private plate - 17/03/2012 07:44

I too have a private plate fetish. Adds to the mystery of the car!

A20 VHT on the 20vt (a 20v hybrid turbo). Had that on my last 3 coops.
K2 OUP on custard (As Mick alludes)

Also have had F2 OVT (now with Mark)

Never paid more than 500 all in, although have paid a few pennies to transfer and on retention certs.

Re: Help me choose a private plate - 17/03/2012 15:04

Not bad at £255 all in either. It seems if you buy from the DVLA direct then you pay less as the £80 transfer fee is included.

JBT I rang your man but nothing he had tickled my fancy, he didn't have anything less than £400 either. I think he hiked the prices up when I mentioned your name? laugh tongue

Re: Help me choose a private plate - 17/03/2012 16:20

I thought you wanted it timeless? You've made it look older with a 'M' plate
Posted By: pinin_prestatyn

Re: Help me choose a private plate - 17/03/2012 17:01

Well, old is good! "they don't make 'em like they used to" and all that!

Re: Help me choose a private plate - 17/03/2012 17:04

Nice one matt. I like it. Great price too. Get a picture up when it comes through.

Wmt I dont think thats right. No one looking at that car is going to think its an m plate. They will clearly think its a private number.

Re: Help me choose a private plate - 17/03/2012 17:18

Oldest coops wear M plates?

If Matt's happy, I'm happy wink
Posted By: MrCooper

Re: Help me choose a private plate - 17/03/2012 18:45

They might but anyone who knows coupes will know it relates to the car and anyone who does not will never think that particular car is an m plate.

MrCooper is my coupe's pride defence solicitor/guard dog laugh He's only doing his job.

Thanks Cwees. When I come to insure the car I'll make them aware smile I wonder if I'll pay more because it's a plus? Are they the same insurance group as a boggo 20VT?

when the insurance groups went to 20 a standard vt was group 18, an le was 19, and a plus 20

Excellent....it now has a "red flag" on the PNC, so be prepared for a stop & search every time you drive it! tongue

Oh, and any traffic cop who is a petrol head will immediately be suss because he'll "know" that a Plus wasn't available as an M plate wink

Enjoy! laugh

I love nothing more than a nice chinwag with those assigned to "protect and serve" in fact I think I'll do a bit of dodgy number spacing to increase my chances tongue

Group 20? For a bodykit and a sixth cog? Sheesh crazy

Edinburgh's the place for you then Pinin, not only did they follow me into the school carpark to tell me off about the spacing, they noticed the letters had different shading [brownish] which gave a 3-D illusion, which I hadn't even seen! Had to promise to get new ones - hope they didn't take a note of the plate originator.......

wave Joe wink

Oh and AFAIK pretty well all M plates were demo models and I suspect were M7** CLM or thereabouts.

Nice plate btw cool

Nothing to do with it.

The higher group is because the Plus is the best and most desireable model so more likely to get stolen wink
