Fitting genuine side skirts, how are they fixed? - 23/05/2012 16:26

i need some pictures of how genuine side skirts are fixed to the underside of the sill. i found one small picture of one fixing, which seems to show a threaded bar with a couple of washers and a nut ar one end, which i assume screws into a captive nut? are all the fixings like this?

much needed photos required!

My old zender skirts had 2 little brackets that attached to the sill, almost clipped onto the vertical thin piece of the sill edge.

What skirts do you have Plus or LE?

LE are bonded along top of sill and captive nuts on underside.

Plus use plastic panel clips along where the LE ones are bonded which go into little holes, and also have captive nuts.
You could drill the holes but the spacing would have to be spot on and would need to get mesurements off a Plus. Which may also lead to water/moisture getting in the sill box section but they do have drainage holes anyway.

As for the captive nut , you could weld some on or i heard a tube welded and threaded will do same job.

If you are unsure which you have post a pic of inside of skirt and i can tell you from that.
Dont have a pic of the uderside captive nuts.

As Cheech says, if they are LE they also need to be screwed under the car. May be the same with Zender (Im not sure).

Some of my mounts were rusty so we removed them and i had my Dads body shop make up some new ones.

They are plus ones, ive drilled the holes to the face of the sills and are spot-on with the skirts clipping on perfectly, but just wanted to see who they fixed to the underside. i dont need to worry about rusting to any new holes and the shell is going off next week to be media blasted and sprayed inside and out, which is why i need some photos of all the fixing

This is just the type of picture I need, but are they all the same? Could you give me a measurement of the height, so I can make some up?

The factory weld theraded studding straight onto the sill (Reinforced with a nut), they are different lengths for each hole, I welded stainless studding back into the place where the factory had them and then ran a 13mm nut up over a large repair washer (Again copying exactly what the factory had done) until the skirts were sitting in their correct position. I then cut off the excess leaving a spot on position for the skirt that looks completly factory.

The way that Dax has done it is nice but is obviously different from what was there before (Albeit arguably stronger)

If you look at my rebuild thread there are some pictures of the skirts there

Your picture is the one I looked at in the first instance, and what I quoted in my first post. I did not know if this was the standard way of fixing these side skirts, obviously from what you have said, its yes. It makes its so much easier doing it this way, as you say, you can adjust the positioning to suite. I will however, drill holes to the underside of the sill to accept a captive nut, so I can screw the threaded bar in, rather than welding it (I can't weld).

Yes this is the standard way of doing it.

I wouldnt drill into the underside of the car, not quite sure why they need to be adjustable. Duffy wheres the pic of how you did it? Im intregued to see how it differs to the way in my pic. Always good to see different suggestions, many thanks smile
