Thanks guys, it really lifts the interior for me. I'd like to do the tunnel piece too but not sure it'll be that practical and is a pig to get off so I hear. Only problem is the gloss black needs constant dusting!

I put a boost guage in too instead of the clock (eagle eyed ones would have noticed!) that works well for me (and boosts to 1.1 Joe, certainly when at full boost in 6th so pleased with that!)

I think the stereo works really well with it also as it is gloss black when not in use and discreet when in use.

The halfords mats i got last night finish it off though, really pleased with them!

did you do it yourself? if so did you use special plastic primer etc..?

Re: My gloss black centre console - 14/05/2009 11:44

I took all the rubber off using nail varnish remover and lots of scrubbing and painted it up but wasn't happy with the finsh (couldn't get the laquer right) so took it to a bodyshop who did the upper and lower console and ashtray for me for a tenner! (just did it while a jet back car was in for a respray). He did use a special primer however for it as the ashtray's rubber goes very deep so i didn't get to remove it all.

That looks very very good! I like pianos.

Will have to do it myself any year now..

My mate did his centre console wine red (or whatever it is, burgundy-ish???) to match the dash strip, it looks good and subtle. If its speed red then maybe a different story!

Ideally one day a carbon fibre one would be nice.......

Does the rubber stuff HAVE to be removed?? I bought a spare one last year to play with and used some multipurpose plastisol primer (stuff in a spray can), then sprayed with gloss black paint.

Although i havent fitted it, it came out really nice. Just seems like one hell of a job to remove

The rubber doesn't have to be removed completely. I just sprayed mine over with putty primer to a smooth finish.

Re: My gloss black centre console - 02/06/2009 21:22

Hi Arthur,

I had a smoked lens for the boost gauge but used the clock's lens instead. I think I should have used the smoked one but it got badly scratched so might tint it with a bit of offcut from window tints.

Nice, i've always preferred the area around the gearbox and handbrake in the 16v's compared to the 20v's, I wish you could maybe shoe-horn that bit into a 20v?
