Polished rocker cover - 31/03/2010 08:33

I've seen a couple of polished rocker covers, how is this done or are they made like it?

it takes alot of rubbing down with grades of wet and dry sandpaper , then use rubbing compound and a buffing wheel going down in grades of compound , then use a metal polish to get it to shine . i'm halfway done on mine but it still needs alot of work to get it to the standard that i want , i will post some pic's when i'm done . try doing your plug cover first to see how much work it takes and good luck .

plug cover finished - but needs buffing again

Cheers mate, looks like it's best to buy a spare one and swap when done. What grades of wet and dry did you use? Plug cover looks censored ing sweet btw.

Or simply give Paul at Motormech £95 and he'll fit one for you with a new camcover gasket

Going to go the elbow grease root, hard work but more satisfying i hope. Quite far down the ever expanding list of jobs though. Need more time and money, should get t-shirts printed with that on for all coupe owners!

they do look amazing polished

He must either polish yours up or give you a polished one and take yours in exchange surely for that price.

Re: Polished rocker cover - 31/03/2010 22:06

I used emery and autosol and it came up ok.....just elbow grease and hard work.
I think they may sell elbow grease on ebay.

looking good spit....if you saw my engine bay you'd cry...in fact you will at AutoItalia, but be nice, I'm not going have time to do anything other than give it a clean

Re: Polished rocker cover - 31/03/2010 22:29

It takes literally a few hours to get it like that
1...get new gasket and gasket sealer
2...take off cover , clean and de grease...
3...Just use some halfords spray (hammerite etc.) and give it one or 2 coats. It does not have to be high temp. stuff.
4...while the main cover is drying, rub up the plug cover and just use elbow grease and finish off with autosol. You can use wet and dry but I just used fine emery.
5....re assemble with new gasket and seal

Honest.....would take no longer than 4 hours to do it.
That's all I did...not perfect but it looks ok.

Re: Polished rocker cover - 31/03/2010 22:52

use lacquer on plug cover, will keep its shine longer smile

Re: Polished rocker cover - 31/03/2010 22:57

I prefer not to use it and just shine it up with brasso or autosol from time to time......do the same with the fuel cap too but everyone is different I suppose
It is going to look cool when I get the red hoses fitted from the GB......I know that much lol

Re: Polished rocker cover - 31/03/2010 23:18

I printed off the rocker cover removal how to, so I could give it a go.

I noticed that Patch did his without removing the rocker cover......might give that a try as a temporary tart up....although Patches looks amazing

Re: Polished rocker cover - 31/03/2010 23:24

There is nothing stopping you removing the plug cover and doing that first......that's what I did.
Your car will run fine without it it while you are cleaning it up.
That will make a big difference too.

Re: Polished rocker cover - 01/04/2010 03:08

I did mine on my old coupe without taking it off. I used wet and dry paper and lots of elbow grease

Those look very nice.

I was hoping to get something like this:

Is there anyone who does this, on an exchange basis or otherwise?

Re: Polished rocker cover - 10/04/2010 23:33

I used to do them for Barbz, a local lad polishes & then chrome plates the plug cover.

I tried plating the rocker, but it doesn't come up too well, due to the sharp edges, the nickel comes through, so you get the yellow tinge.

I ended up poweder coating, like the pic you show smile

Re: Polished rocker cover - 11/04/2010 00:09

I guess if you did the powder coating on the main part, and just polished the plug cover, the result would be similar.

Does the powder coating last for a while?
