Ney. Fake Carbon looks tacky and it doesn't suit the car. The standard pillars look great as they are. I will say in the picture it's fitted very well and looks alright though.

Re: 3m carbon film wrapped - 28/06/2010 13:55

thought i'd try it before having them repainted as they were quite faded. This new 3m carbon stuff is alot more realistic than the normal carbon sticker stuff, you can acutally feel the weave.

Re: 3m carbon film wrapped - 28/06/2010 18:13

Looks good, but I would have had the weave going the same way.

What's going at the bottom of the B piller, I'm guessing you used heat to get into the recess? But looks like when fitting, the applicator has stretched the vinyl in the bottom corner, or is it just the picture making the weave look distorted?

Re: 3m carbon film wrapped - 28/06/2010 19:15

yeah the heat and stretching of the material has caused the weave too be slighty different, but without heat and streching it simlpy wouldnt fit without creases

Re: 3m carbon film wrapped - 28/06/2010 19:25

Apply the vinyl over the piller, working on the flat area first. Then heat the area over the recess & work it in using you finger/thumb. Then re apply heat over the area. Job done.

Re: 3m carbon film wrapped - 28/06/2010 19:29

thats what was done

Re: 3m carbon film wrapped - 28/06/2010 19:34

Fair enough, but I can't see how the bottom got distorted then. I take it you applied it "dry"? No water/soap? So you applied the vinyl on the whole piller first top to bottom, bridging the recess?

Just trying to work out how it's done...

Re: 3m carbon film wrapped - 28/06/2010 19:43

yes but the vinyl isnt made of playdoe it will only stretch so much so its actually quite hard to push the vinyl into the recess without getting creases. So you really have to pull on it causing a little distortion too the weave. Even real carbon isnt always streight if the part has complex curves or angles

Re: 3m carbon film wrapped - 28/06/2010 19:54

I think carbon fibre suits 'handsome cars' - for example if you were to put in on the beefy Nissan GTR or BMW M5.

With 'pretty' cars such as the Coupe or a Maserati 3200GT, I think it looks too aggressive and doesn't go with the overall sleek look of the car.

I would respray them piano black.

Re: 3m carbon film wrapped - 28/06/2010 19:58

Leon, with respect I think your missing what I'm saying? When you apply the vinyl...forget the recess to start with. Apply the vinyl over it, so the whole flat area of the piller is covered. You should now have the piller covered with the carbon vinyl. now the area over the recess will be taught, like a drum skin. Use a heat gun, on the area bridging the recess. Once it's hot enough you will see the vinyl stretch. Put the heat gun down & while the vinyl is still warm work it into the recess using your finger, re apply heat when needed.

The 3m wrap film is the dogs.... I bet you could even wrap an apple with it.

I know this technique works, as I'm a vinyl applicator laugh

even the most aggressively styled Coupe is still essentially a pretty car. cool

Re: 3m carbon film wrapped - 28/06/2010 20:02

this is exactly what i done but at the bottom of the curve i was getting an annoying crease to get rid of it i had to stretch the vinyl slightly

Re: 3m carbon film wrapped - 30/06/2010 11:22

Yey...

And if you wanted a swap with say a freshly repainted set in gloss black with the correct badges for your car, let me know...

Carbon was one of the things I thought of doing but couldn't get thin enough real CF or the CF effect kits I looked at before looked censored...

This looks good though....

Re: 3m carbon film wrapped - 30/06/2010 19:20

Starter kit

Large kit

There is a thread about this stuff on the cliosport site. Guy sealed his centre console, looks fantastic! Will post a link when I get home.

Know a guy who works fantastic with that, wraps just everything. Not UK site, but the gallery is more important (especially the white BMW 6:) )
