360 modena front bumper, Cooling - 08/01/2006 19:44

I´m gonna fit my 360 modena front now in a while, And i´m going to build a fmic! But there is no hole in the middle so it can cool the fmic?! juts the two at the side as the original ferrari 360 modena front! But would it cool it enough?

Greetings/Emil

You really need that FMIC in airflow - ie behind the inlet, it basically won't work if does not have air flowing over it. Also if you can force the air through it with a duct it makes it work alot better again. Can you run ducts from those intakes to the FMIC? It would likely work ok with a standard intercooler as the IC is right on one side behind where one of the ducts would be.

I actually wonder about the those 360 in regards to Raditor cooling - anyone else had any problems as the standard bumper has big cut-outs in the front and the 360 has nothing does it.

I'm no expert on the bumper but the FMIC needs airflow

Can you post a picture of your bumper

I think it would be a bad idea to put an FMIC on a 360 bumper. It's also a bit pointless because with a bigger cutout on the sides the sidemount is getting as much air as a front mount would. It's only because the standard bumper has really small holes for air to the sidemount that it becomes worthwhile to mount it at the front.
On the cooling side, I guess it is no worse than having a FMIC in front of an aircon radiator in front of the radiator.

The zender looks better suited to an FMIC IMO or you could always cut the standard bumper up a little and rebuild it...

Ironically the Zender is also much better for the standard intercooler which would get as much air as a front mount with it (although of course its surface area is much smaller)

In short if you really want good flow to an IC stay standard or chop some slats out of the standard one and smooth it all off??

That's not quite what I meant!

If you want more power than standard then any way you look at it you want to replace the OE intercooler. The OE intercooler cannot take much more than standard boost, and is not great for airflow through the intercooler

If you have a Zender bumper and want to uprate then a front mount or an uprated sidemount are both viable alternatives. The main benefit of having an FMIC in that scenario is the shorter pipe run, and the intercooler being physically futher forwards in the bumper. The drawback is less airflow to the radiator and aircon radiator. With a standard bumper an FMIC will get a lot more airflow over it than the standard location (of the order of twice as much air) which is why it is so beneficial. You could chop some slats off too if you want even better airflow.

On the 360 bumper the standard intercooler position is going to be better than a front-mount

Sorry i didnt mean to stay with standard IC Meant bumper sorry for not being clear

Cheers for the info JohnS think i may have to get playing with the front bumper if i get the PA unit but looking tight...

I belive I've seen 360 bumpers with a third hole in the middle. Would one of those provide enough airflow for a frontmounted IC?

I run a std front bumper with a cad splitter and my FMIC is much bigger than the Pro alloy one, so it is possible. I have some 50 or 60mm holes behind my numberplate too so I can take the plate off for track days, and it also helps the flow round the intercooler

I was thinking of removing 2/3 of the slats, smoothing them off and leaving much bigger holes but i think it would take some good work with a sander and poly filler to get right but did fancy the zender bumper but wouldnt want to chop it No worries matey you should get us some links upto where you host your zillion pics of your modded coop in various states as well

The original modena bumper designed by Joey did have a hole in the middle for airflow to the radiator...
Also, it has way better airflow then most other bumpers when using the OE IC.

Like Ive said previously - Ive had my bumper for a couple of years now and my fmic for a few months - without any coolling issues.

Infact using Barnacles diagnostic widget DocFrags car was only 4deg cooler than mine generally. I put this down to him having aquamist.

There is a 3rd hole in the bumper. The rad is the only problem I can see with the FMIC, since the install temps on the diagnostics show another 10deg whilst sat in traffic although on the gauge in the car it still hoovers at 90 whilst showing 100 on the ECU
