Power steering change. - 09/03/2014 21:03

I am thinking about getting rid of my belt driven power steering, and changing to an electric alternitive.

Your thoughts please.

Good idea. The pug 106 uses an electric pump.
To improve space when turbo charging they move the pump to behind the front seats by extending the pipework.
One of these should in theory just pipe into the existing unions on the rack. I've got two of these pumps somewhere in the workshop.

The other versions like the corsa use a much more complicated system that needs the column retrofitting in and sounds like a headache.

All Punto Mk2 1999-2005 has it aswell. It might actually been one of the first electrics..?

Punto is just assisted on the column, no fluid or pump as far as I'm aware.

Do you need a controller to run the Saxo pumps?

Aah see the difference. The Punto steering feel is rubbish anyway..

Re: Power steering change. - 10/03/2014 17:06

I think you can buy a control unit for the Punto column so you can set the assistance. I seem to recall reading about it on a Peugeot 205 forum. If I were to do it it'd be my preferred method as I've heard of the fluid overheating due to the cooling loop missing when you retro fit the Saxo pumps.

Magooagain, how do you propose to drive the alternator after the pump delete?

Re: Power steering change. - 10/03/2014 17:26

The punto system uses an electric motor to directly assist the steering column, inside the dash.

It has a separate steering ECU and the level of assistance is adjustable between normal and high.

I doubt there's room inside the coupe dash for the motor as it's quite big. Also the steering ECU would need reprogramming somehow to account for the differences in lock to lock turns and the level of assistance etc.

Converting the coupe pump to electric rather than engine driven would be a lot easier but I'm not sure I see any point tbh.

I will also be removing the air con compressor, a smaller belt will be used. Also i can get another alternater tensioner to fit.

For me its all about removing wieght and releasing valuable room to get at the oil filter. I will then fit a sandwich plate and new hoses(agricultrual grade) to a front mounted oil cooler.

Keep the standard power steering pump in situ, the pump itself weighs less then 2kg so changing that won't make much difference and it's a load of hassle to go for an adapted/modified setup.

For ease change it to a none a/c, you'll save a lot of weight with the compressor etc removed and it's an easy adaption as you're just refitted standard Coupe parts.

Seems to me that the easiest method would be to retain the pump pulley by using the shaft cut off an old pump.

The coupe pump is a wierd set up isn't it. I think the bearing is noisy on mine.

Re: Power steering change. - 11/03/2014 06:32

I have a VW Polo pump sitting in the garage, I am considering using it on my build, but I will have to talk to someone that can control it, maybe using the ABS sensors.

I am open to suggestions...

Hi there!

Joseph is a little copycat! ;-)

This is my setup :

- 106/saxo phase 2 electric pump at original battery emplacement
- 70 amp relay excited by the W+ alternator plug (+ fuses)
- AC compressor delete
- Bracket modification (cutting to open oil filter location and cutting to allows the alternator pulley to align crank's one).
- Front mount Mocal intercooler + Mocal thermostatic sandwich plate.
- Only one 4 ribs polybelt to drive alternator
- Adding a Porsche 944 loose pulley and tensionner.

The pump needn't any control (on-off only). The steering is really smooth and constant.

No strut brace ! tongue

Re: Power steering change. - 13/03/2014 18:53

Thanks guys!
The strut brace is on the road Joseph (painting job come this week). ;-)
I've buy 5 Federal RSR595 tires (one for your spare wheel!) and the whiteline 22mm rear ARB. Just need new coilovers to replace my FK's (looks for BR or D2 racing) and a bucket seat (Sparco Pro 2000 maybe?).

Sorry for irrelevant and my poor english! ;-)

Great job Keviv. We must look for something more easy to find of a "Porsche 944 loose pulley and tensionner" to make the mod.
