I have Vlues at the minute but im wearing thru them quite well so i would go for a harder compoun version which i think were maybe the greys or the yellows and better for the wear.... Nigel is the man for this stuff though as he has organised 2 group buys now from 3G...

Depends on how hard you are on your brakes and what you intend on doing with the car.
If it's mostly normal with the occasional "spirited" road use then get some Mintex 1144, if you intend on doing any track work, or you are just a nutter then something like the Pagids (blue/yellow or grey depending on how hot you want to get them and how fast you want them to wear).

Re: What brake pads to buy? - 13/01/2006 22:16

well... it will be normal with the odd sprint.

Do mintex 1144s last well or are they just ok alround?

i would like to get the most out of the 3g discs, would be a shame to waste them.

The Pagid Blues are very good but cost £165 a set

Re: What brake pads to buy? - 13/01/2006 22:23

I've had them on mine for the past 4 years. I think I'm on my second pair at the front so they last OK, especially considering I also run grooved discs (the 3G 20-groove). They seem to work alright, good bite when cold and not got them to fade when hot either. There are certainly better pads out there but for the money they are alright.

Re: What brake pads to buy? - 13/01/2006 22:31

I havent had fade yet but mine do seem to be wearing quickly and i dont hammer them loads until warm and not even that much when warm but they have had some major stops, once or twice from 140leptons up the sliproads..... abs has kicked in once or twice of late as well but easily sorted

What are the next set i should chose to wear out a bit better scooby is it the yellows or the greys as i know one set will wear out quicker but offer better bite and resistance to fade and the offers are a backward step in performance but last longer and i need them to last longer really where possible as im doing too many miles in the coop still

£165 for pads....i think i will let them go.

scoody are you talking about the mintex ones? any recommended suppliers? i want to get front and rear.

cheers all for your help everyone.

AA do Mintex.

I have the 1144's with standard Brembo discs. I am not impressed with them to be honest. They squeak and fade pretty easy IMO.

If i were buying a new set of pads now i would go for the Pagid blues. You get what you pay for.

Re: What brake pads to buy? - 14/01/2006 01:03

Mintex 1155's are excellent IMO. Much cheaper than Blues - they do squeal on my car though - but then so do most uprated pads. I'd go for 1144's for road use - I went for 1155's for track days. If you can get 1155's to fade on the roads you'll have to be pushing the car really hard.

Ditto the 1155's They didn't fade for me at Bedford either.

1144's do not fade 'easily' though. Suppose it depends what your definition of easy is Standard discs won't help and it may be the brake fluid not the pads, you definitely need 5.1 fluid too

Re: What brake pads to buy? - 14/01/2006 02:22

paulr20vt - I was talking about the Mintex 1144, I haven't tried the Pagids as I simply don't hammer the brakes enough to warrant £130+ on a pair of pads, never go on the track and need to have something that works from cold too. I've only ever managed to get them to start to fade after deliberately doing several 60(ish ) to 5mph stops in a row. I always run with DOT5.1 fluid, replaced at every service.

Re: What brake pads to buy? - 14/01/2006 02:37

I suppose the difference between the 1144s and the 1155s is that I could do quite a few 100-5 stops on purpose with some fade from the 1144's whereas the 1155's just get better the more abuse you give them. The 1155's don't give quite as much stopping power from cold as 'normal' pads but it doesn't take much to warm them up.

Re: What brake pads to buy? - 14/01/2006 02:50

I think my car has Pagid Grey pads fitted. Combined with 3G 10 groove discs, the stopping power is sooooo much better than the standard set-up. Wear seems pretty good on them and bite is excellent - very little squeal too.

The only downside I notice is a distinct reduction in braking performance and "propellor noise" when the weather is really wet.

Ferodo DS2500s are well rated pads across the net, lots of people use them in their track cars/ring cars etc....

You can get a set for about £100 from motorsportdirect, I've fitted them with a few other members and they are top notch, great cold bite and I havent got them near fading on my 3G 10G discs. Will be doing some motorsport this year also to really test them

Re: What brake pads to buy? - 14/01/2006 04:02

ive tried the whole mintex range now, and ive got them all to fade with road use.

the pagid pads are the only pads that i havent had fade, but at that price they are too expensive, and they dont last long either.

now i run good old OE fiat pads, squeal free but dont stop very well.

DS2500's next, gouki threatened me if i dont use them and he is a lunatic!

Re: What brake pads to buy? - 14/01/2006 04:16

I go for Carbotech!!

Re: What brake pads to buy? - 14/01/2006 04:35

Yeah but your a nutter Rog!lol i have never been round 90degree bends that quick ever!

ok...

so mintex 1144, they are quite good but can fade (although i doubt i will make them fade.

mintex 1155, good, but nots so good from cold, once warm better then 1144

the Pagids are best but i can not afford them just yet..

Ferodo DS2500s seem good but no reveiws on a coupe.

and one for Carbotech

So i think i have started the worst thread ever!!! Maybe i will get some boring standard ones and then replace them with pagids when i can afford it.

Good idea?

Re: What brake pads to buy? - 14/01/2006 04:44

Yep!

While we're on the subject, i'm not sure when my brake fluid was last changed. Is it an easy job to do yourself? (how to guide anywhere?) and while i'm at it i may give the calipers a refurb!

With standard discs and 1144's what will the best VFM / perfromance brake fluid be?

Thanks muchly everyone!

the best brake fluid IMO for any application is Motul RBF DOT 4 from oilman (opie oils).

Re: What brake pads to buy? - 14/01/2006 05:07

Glad you said that Rog, because that's what i've just put in.

Well seen as how i have brand new front and rear EBC green stuff pads sitting in the garage with the brand new 3G brakes i bought in the group buy done by KP i think you'll be more than alright until you deceide what setup to go for

Re: What brake pads to buy? - 15/01/2006 02:41

Pagid blues are great but expensive, a very good alternative is the Brembo Racing pad at £79 a set, these are nearly as good as the pagids but at half the price.

Call Steve at Alternative Autos for a good price.

Re: What brake pads to buy? - 15/01/2006 03:55

Pagid pads are the only pads I have failed to get fade from.

Mintex 1144s lasted two weeks before I threw them away.

Mintex 1155s lasted two months before I nearly fell off the road in Wales due to complete fade.

Tarox were OK, but nothing special

Red Dot fast road faded within a day

Red Dot race pads were brilliant, but only lasted 2000 miles.

Pagid Yellows were still giving massive bite at Bedford Autodrome, even though the calipers had turned gold. When i showed Pagid some piccies of the pads, they said that disc / pad temperatures must have been well over 850 degrees

Anyone fancy a new Pagid Group Buy?

To be fair though Nigel, you would probably destroy £5k worth of ceramic brakes in a day

I've had them on for a while now, and as I said above they provide excellent cold bite (don't need to warm them up for everyday driving), and I havent got them to fade yet.

All round a great pad, I'd say they would perform better cold than the racing pagids, but maybe offer fractionally less performance say hammering round a track (any pad will have a trade off, no one pad will give great cold road use, great track use, have longevity and not ruin your discs. Give and take from these areas).

On the road I'd be surprised if anyone got DS2500s to fade, they have lasted ages on my car and havent worn my discs down as of yet. Not much squeel either (intermittant).

Evenin fledgling Coupe owner Paul

Cheapest place I've found for the 1144s is Motor Sport World (Online). Under a hundred delivered. Last time I called they still had not updated their listings for this pad to include the 20VT but the guy I spoke to knew it was the same as another (I think it was a pugeot).

1144's are £59.95+vat from Alternative Autos

Alternative auto's do Mintex pads too.....

Re: What brake pads to buy? - 17/01/2006 07:55

Like Nigel I can highly recommend the pagid blue's. They don't fade, and I have more fun out braking M3's then chasing them down a dual carriage way

Re: What brake pads to buy? - 17/01/2006 09:11

Pagid Blues are the best all round pad I have used on the Coupe , no fade atall and they pull up slightly better than the Mintex 1144's as well.
The only thing against them is the price of a pair, but then you pays what you get for

Re: What brake pads to buy? - 17/01/2006 21:06

I have been running Carbotech Panther Plus for one year.

They are intended for track use but I have found them good for both track and road.

Last year I ran the car on tracks like Anderstorp, Spa & Nürburgring with no sign of fade what so ever. This was with standard DOT 5.1 fluid (fresh of course).

This year I will be putting the car on race tiers and will then when the Panther Plus’s are worn out, be "upgrading" to Carbotech XP8 pads and race fluid.

Re: What brake pads to buy? - 20/01/2006 11:27

another vote for Ferodo DS2500
Excellent cold bite and no fade braking from 150 to 70ish.
The only problem that I had was that is a bit noisy

Re: What brake pads to buy? - 20/01/2006 21:12

I can also recommend the Carbotech Panther Plus.
Amazing brake performance. Tested both on race track and standard road use.
Good stuff!

So many different makes but what about the EBC range ( green, red, yellow, blue stuff plus the standard black) ?

Re: What brake pads to buy? - 25/01/2006 20:12

I have just fitted the ebc yellow, and can say out of std, 1144 mintex and 1155 mintex these are the best i have had. so far only done 60 miles, so don't want to review them yet! also about £100 so cheaper than the pagid. Now using 3g 10 groove as well.
