Gearbox upgrade how to?

Hello, can someone explain to me in detail how the 5 speed gearbox can be strengthened? I read that there is plates which are installed ( upper and lower) to prevet flex. I have read that the early 5 spd. is the strongest gearbox, is that right? Early menaing 93-95 year? Pictures of these plates will help me understand better. Thank you.
