VIS tuning options? - 15/01/2021 19:30

I know Flea quotes 2 options, as anyone got any experience of them? Any advice on how to get hold of him, he never responses to emails!
Are there any alternatives?

Yep. My VIS was remapped by Flea. Rolling Road and live map.

The stage 1 remap only gives modest bhp gains of around 10%. But improvement in general drivability and fuel economy not bad either.

Thanks, I'll keep trying!

Anyone had any experience of Pendle Performance?

How is your VIS running in general?

At the moment it's still sulking down at the Fiat specialist. in fairness it's not it's fault this time as the guy that runs it is ill, It's had three overheating issues in the last 18mths or so. This time it's the matrix. Normally it runs brilliantly, fairly low mileage, lots of new parts following major rebuild in 2019.

I had the 16vt before and the VIS seems underwhelming, loads of torque, feels it could take another gear as revs so freely. I'm thinking a remap or a turbo maybe the way to go.

Re: VIS tuning options? - 27/01/2021 13:33

Well, coming from a 16VT the VIS won't be as pokey being 30 odd bhp down on power and the torque provided by the turbo.

Remap won't transform the performance, it'll just enhance it but don't expect big gains. Would be much simpler to buy a 20vt.

Having said that, the VIS is great for thrashing and having fun with in speed limit. It is also probably the most reliable of the range and quite good on fuel too.

I know what you mean about the top gear. It would benefit from a 6th for motorway cruising.

How well established is the 2.0-2.4 route? How many have been done, with what results? Is it a straightforward swop?

Joe at FCSS has done a 2.4 conversion and remapped to about 200bhp without a turbo.

I think the engine is the same size other than being slightly taller to accommodate the slightly longer stroke. I think the bore diameters are the same.

Are you having over heating issues again?

Hi Joe, the overheating is resolved for now at least, as you may recall we lost the original engine, yours is fine there was a problem with a switch on the radiator, this time it was the matrix. All sorted again and running well, having had the turbo I guess my expectations were too high. Just looking at what if anything can be done with a VIS. Do you have any info on the 2.4 option is it worth doing?

It was wasn't it Joe? Just chuck it in, and job's a good un.... though you had to close the bonnet too, which took a bit longer laugh

I seem to remember you junked the VIS system, put more aggressive cams on too, plus lots of remap work. Anything else like bigger injectors?

Anyway, the VIS in standard form is 155bhp (only 8bhp more than the standard 20v) and Stage 1 remap will make around 10 - 15 bhp more. I'd imagine that dropping in a 2.4 will probably cost a fair bit, just to gain the extra 15bhp over a standard VIS (the 2.4 is 170bhp with a bit extra torque) so I would think you'd be better getting a 20VT if you want a big increase in power. Especially, as the 20VT has uprated parts (suspension, clutch, gearbox, brakes) to deal with the power.

I know what you mean about the VIS. It doesn't feel that rapid, but it is lots of fun and sounds great. I would like a turbo also, but the VIS is a good all rounder and pretty reliable. But I hope to get a 20VT one day.

Re: VIS tuning options? - 16/02/2021 14:40

When the first 2.4 was in the development stages I did swap out the VIS plenum for an early banana alloy unit as variable veins were becoming restrictive causing issues with the curve, the difference including fitting a larger throttle body was night and day with an added bonus it sounded like it was on throttle bodies, nutz all the way to 8.5k rpm and yes it pulled all the way to the top, 202bhp on 95 ron fuel, would have made more with 99 but at the time no where near the old workshops sold Super so FC remapped it as requested.

Components wiser you do need a small shopping including bigger injectors, end result is its' a match for a standard 20vt and kicks there arse on circuit in the wet laugh

Thanks Joe, the end result sounds good, any idea how much all this would cost? I'm imagining it's mostly time if the parts are available. Ironically I could end-up devaluing an original coop by modifying it!

What’s different to the 20v na and the 20v VIS, thinking of remapping my V.I.S I know it isn’t gonna be a lot but surely it will make a difference?

Is it worth it?……

Re: VIS tuning options? - 20/11/2021 21:33

Well... The VIS has the 'variable intake system' hence VIS which gives good low rpm torque and a bit extra in the top end. Also has a different ECU and a few other upgrades. Quite linear power delivery. I think it is more refined than the NA (having owned both).

As for remap you'll get a max of 10% extra bhp at best. It does make a difference, but it probably won't wow you. Prices of remaps have gone up I think, so not sure if I'd bother these days. It depends how well your coupe is running at the moment. Sometimes a remap will help with flat spots etc.

If you really want more power then you're better finding a turbo model. Or just enjoy thrashing the VIS... Like wot I does. wink

Re: VIS tuning options? - 22/11/2021 17:42

I looked at this and decided against it, as Gripped says the VIS is a great car always ready to rev enthusiasticly. For the sort of money you need to get a major difference I bought a 260hp Brera, you'll struggle to get anywhere that with a VIS. That said it's not all about hp, 260 doesn't feel that great because of the weight of the engine!
Just enjoy the VIS, if you yearn for power the turbos are inffinately more tunable.
