Thanks to Barbz @ Torque Italia !! - 29/06/2007 03:29
Some of you will know that over the last few months Barbz @ Torque Italia has been doing some very special new tuning modifications on my car. After months of hard graft from Barbz I have got the results of the work back -
On normal fuel the car made 577BHP using water inj. I don't trust water injection (and don't have a DDS3 or similar) so without the extra advance it gives the car made 547BHP with 4xx lbs/ft (not got the power graphs back) all at a relatively modest 1.5 bar boost and relatively conservative advance. That's over 480BHP at the wheels.
On 102RON fuel without water injection it is making 616BHP and 480lbs/ft torque still at 1.5 bar boost!!!
with plenty more to come by using more boost or a higher octane fuel. That's 470BHP/tonne with a full interior.
Also with this much power and where the power is delivered there is absolutely no doubt that it is capable of over 200mph.
What is most impressive is the fact that this has been done on a GT30 hybrid (like a GT3076R) so on my 2.4 it is pretty much lag free!
Have had my traction control extensively tuned for it as well so it can put most of it down in lower gears and all of it down in higher gears
I can't thank Barbz enough for the untiring effort he has put into my car, he carried on through a mass of setbacks and complications. The result is a tribute to his legendary engine tuning abilities! Truly a tuning magician!!
Cheers to everyone on the forum who has been supporting me in this!
Will post up graphs when I get them
John

Matt from SA got 180 or similar, but never hit 200, so anyone getting more than that has the high speed award.
Great work tho John and Barbz, some serious power, esp if you're getting it down in the early gears!

Re: Thanks to Barbz @ Torque Italia !! - 29/06/2007 14:00
Bring it on John!
I was expecting figures like those - and it's all finished for TOTB - hope you'll be there, as the top speed run will truly be yours.
Hats off once again for being the first to try something new.
I knew the 2.4's had much more potential than the 450 bhp odd that they were producing - and you're still 'only' using a GT30, which really sets the engine apart from 2lr engines (not just coupe) that run big power but have to go much bigger than a T30 to get the headline figure and suffer below 4K as a result.
I'd love to know more detail of the spec like who did the manifold, mapping etc. but dont know what you can or cant post up.

Re: Thanks to Barbz @ Torque Italia !! - 29/06/2007 14:05
John I think we need a pic of the engine and car just to make sure you really have got what you say in there, and haven't just slipped in a used RB211 or something...
How/when are you gonna test that 10 sec quarter mile and/or 200mph? Is the Pod long enough for that? Are AutoItalia doing another day this year at the Pod, I don't think so

Re: Thanks to Barbz @ Torque Italia !! - 29/06/2007 14:09
Wow!.... Glad that its all finished and your the first to manage over 600bhp. Will be good to see it at TOTB, engine pics please too (manifold, wastegate, GT30 etc)
P.S You have twice as much power as me
P.P.S Well done Barbz

That's more like the kind of figures the 2.4 should be producing. Looking forward to seeing the graphs while I decide my next move. Are you still running the C&Bs?
Congratulations

thanks for all the positive comments!
I'm on my hols now so will post the graphs up when I get back.
The traction control is the new Motec v3 version (available on M600 and M800) which is amazingly configurable. I can floor it in the pouring rain and there is no ridiculous spinning up of the wheels - the car just goes.

good work John, i'll be keen to see my results on the 11th, but am going to be very cautious, as melted pistons are something I cannot afford
i'd be happy if I get a measly 450 ( and a very reliable 450 at that ! )
the torque is what i'm after tho'

hi john !
very impressive results
do you still use the same gt30 hybrid with 0.86 t25 turbine ?
if so, how did you manage to get such a high output with this turbo although it should be produce a max of about 500hp ????

Re: Thanks to Barbz @ Torque Italia !! - 10/07/2007 15:54
Have updated what I know. Have lost my bl**dy graphs somewhere so cannot post them up at the mo. I think I may go to an independent dyno anyway to prove that it isn't dyno-specific.
Anyway, rough spec of the engine
- Torque italia 2.4 engine inc. forged pistons, rods, crank etc. etc.
- Stage 4 head - oversized in and ex valves with nimonic ex valves
- Custom twin-scroll ex manifold with twin chambers and twin wastegate exits. Basically a heavily reworked Saito style one that was then rewelded up to the final spec as there were a lot of issues with their original design
- Tial 44mm external wastegate with 0.7 bar springs
- Custom 3" exhaust with special lightweight/low loss silencers (power achieved with 3 silencers but I can remove 1 of them and unpack another one). Fully v-banded for better sealing
- Custom GT30 hybrid
- Torque Italia fully braided oil cooler hoses
- Remote oil filter modification with braided hoses
- External fuel pump (Bosch 044) and swirl pot with braided hoses
- Special custom push fan conversion (improves the inlet temp by blowing the heat from the radiator away from the FMIC.
- Full 6" to 4" straight inlet
- Helix twin-plate clutch
The ECU stuff
- Motec M600
- Motec v3.3 traction control
- Wideband lambda correction
- EGT correction
Spoolup is around 3200rpm for 1 bar boost a bit more for full boost, but it is some way higher than that in lower gears as it is a big turbo still. On a dyno run it spools up about 1500rpm later than on the road now which is quite bizarre.
Currently got an 8000rpm limit and max power is pretty near the limit - around 7700rpm if I remember correctly. The turbo would probably make over 400BHP up until 8600rpm I'd guess. Boost hasn't been fully setup and is a flat 1.5 bar so my peak torque is actually at quite high rpm - something like 6300rpm I guess, although if I up the boost lower down it will make more torque and earlier.
Was originally going to get it mapped with a larger turbo (GT3582R) but had some problems with the turbo so is on hold. Would probably make around 650BHP on that turbo with normal fuel and full boost at about 4500rpm
As I said it is all thanks to Barbz for a lot of effort and requiring a lot of fabrication work.

That is some amazing effort there John, and a lot of us wondered what was going on with you being so quiet and selling your old bits
Top speed run would be good, however I would have serious concerns regarding the Coupes safety at the speeds this engine could propel the car to!, I am sure that the magic 200mph is within reach!!

Jeez, that's incredible John. To think, I can remember this car in Windsor in standard form, with just the usual mods. I probably wouldn't recognise it now. Amazing. Can't wait to see your times and speeds for that. Hope you'll be at TOTB to wipe the floor with the rest of the FWD class!! LOL!

Hello Johns,
have you reached this power with your "old compression ratio" of 8,8:1 or have you lowered it a little bit?
Thanks

Thanks for your email on your new map btw it was interesting comparing notes!

Re: Thanks to Barbz @ Torque Italia !! - 12/07/2007 01:48
The days of lowering compression are gone... increase compression and increase boost
Posted By: Anonymous
Re: Thanks to Barbz @ Torque Italia !! - 12/07/2007 02:10
1.9 bar is a bit OTT Flea
My day was mixed with a 1.4bar run....
found some probs, major ones needing addressing with intercooling ( but I knew that anyway )....
nearly cracked the measly 400hp barrier, but next time, with a working variator, 450+ is easily attainable
this tuning lark is a real challenge

Thanks again for everyones support. Will be running normal fuel at TOTB VI which is actually 557BHP not 547BHP. I have the graphs now but all my stuff is upstairs in my house as the area is on flood alert
