Comparing Gtech, Squadra and Gtech II - 22/12/2005 21:16

From the archives i found this old post, thought i could add some more info:

After driving around for some time with the Squadra chip and modding the car meanwhile i decided i wanted to see how my car would drive with the Gtech unit.

Mods:
Blueflame full system
(2.5" downpipe, decat and backbox)
Hybrid Turbo from previous group buy
Blitz SBC ID BC & Powermeter
Tubular Manifold (with coating to prevent heating)
Running 1.25 bar and using speed map to limit boost at lower speeds.
Still running the oem intercooler.

Anyways, i installed the gtech and about the first thing i noticed is that it seems like it pulls a little better in the mid range.
Second thing is that i hit the limitter really fast... the squadra seems to be limmited at 7200RPM and the Gtech at 6800 i think??

Also, with the Gtech i have less flames coming out of the exhaust but there also is less "backfire"
When i let go of the gofast pedal i get some bangs with the squadra, with the gtech they are gone. I kinda like the small puffs coming from the engine when not accerating, it's almost as like it says, come on, put that pedal where it belongs.. gofast!!

Not many difference so it seems, as i'm using the blitz all the 2 chips do is make sure fuelling is allright.
Considering i have a lot of power in the top end, i think i'm gonna stick with the squadra for now.

Didn't get to do a RR test yet as my clutch was really knackered after playing a bit to much with the powermeter
Did manage to get a 0-100KM/h sprint within 5.5 seconds

Maybe the Gtech II chip will do more... ?!

UPDATE:
Installed the Gtech II a while ago. At that time my clutch was gone so there was no way i could test like they should be tested.
Now the 6 paddle clutch with uprated coverplate and lightened flywheel is installed so testing at full boost can be done

[basic info about the gtech II]
The Gtech II is designed for use with more modified cars, you will get the best results from it with a hybrid turbo and a front mount intercooler.
It needs the lower temperatures to prevent higher heating inside the cilinders.

Main differences between a Gtech, Squadra chip and a Gtech II unit:

All chips remove the limiter in 1st and second gear.
All chips use a higher boost level of 1.2 bar, standard is 0.9-1.0 bar.*
All chips adjust the fuelling to the higher boost.
(*the original Gtech unit comes in many flavours, there are some who use a 1.3 bar setting)

Both the Squadra and the Gtech II use ignition advance.
Squadra uses more fuel for in cilinder cooling, therefore it runs rich, i.e. less performance
Gtech II does not use fuel for incilinder cooling, it demands a FMIC or other form of cooling to keep up with the higher temperatures caused by the ignition advance.
The original Gtech unit does not use any ignition advance.
(the novitec, wenning and many other chips do the same as the Gtech unit)

All chips keep the idle RPM the same, at around 720 rpm, the squadra has this set to 800RPM.

Back to the report.

I'm still using the same intercooler wich turned out to be a Pace side mount.. i thought it was oem but the previous owner obviously upgraded or replaced it.
Considering the temperatures now i think this is safe to do. ( i do know i have to install a fmic by the end of winter to keep things safe)

When i installed the Gtech II first thing to notice is that obviously the idle rpm is lower, this makes it sound a little better in my opinion, it seems to have more power in the sound.
Second thing is it pulls even harder of boost then the Squadra did, it has more mid range power as well.
The pulling in the mid range will probably have to do with the fuelling wich will be better then the overfuelling that the Squadra has. The better performance off boost will (i think?) have to do with the ignition advance.

When higher in revs it's a great drive, but then it allready was.
I can't find many more differences other then the rpm limmiter wich kicks in @ 6800 RPM.
(When used to the squadra this takes a while to get used to)

My conclusion:
On a standard car and a fully loaded bankaccount, go for the Squadra since it's obviously the best and the most advanced chip, unfortunatly it's also the most expensive unit priced at 450€
Want extra power but on a low budget, go for a Gtech, it wo'nt dissapoint in any way. For 50€ the cheapest and best mod one can have.

Got a modded car with the additional cooling..... Gtech II is THE unit to install!!
Pricing is great and performance even better!!

I know all of these results are just my impression, i haven't had the time to get it on a RR, however, that will be done somewhere in Febr. so the final results will be posted then

Nice one Edo. I'm planning to get the front intercooler. I have the squadra chip also. You think when the intercooler is installed I have to go back to squadra for an other check up?

Edo, do you have a induction kit, like the K&N 57i or something else?

I don't think Squadra will do check ups, It's not necessairy to do as well.
All the FMIC will do is make your charge temps drop, wich is ofcourse a good thing... it will give you more performance
Maybe the fuelling will be a bit on the heavy side as well for your setup by then, try getting it on a RR.

I have a pipercross induction kit.
