330 mm caliper mod - 06/06/2008 13:29

Just got some 330 calipers, and I think the alen key headed bolt is going to cause cleaance issues on my 17 inch wheels...

If you notice in the pictures they protrude quite a long way out...

I was thinking of switching them to normal socket set headed bolts to reduce the profile. Is this a bad idea? Where would be a good place to take the old bolt so they could match it with a normal headed bolt?
Cheers

What are those bolts for??

Those bolts hold a radial to side mount bracket on the caliper...

I see. I wouldn't have thought you'd have any problems with swapping them for regular bolts. I'd whip one out and head to B&Q. \:D

I'd be more serious on the quality of bolts I'd use for my brakes tbh!
High stress steel would be nice...

Thanks for the replies. Thats what I was after - where could match and source high quality bolts like that?

Just for info, have been looking into this - steel comes in diffrent grades, according to carbon content. It seem you want a minimum of grade 10.9 for bolts on braking components. 12.9 is the highest rate I believe.

thanks again.

just to confirm you cannot use B&Q bolts they have to be much higher grade than that.

Taz - Nice discs - where did you get them? I've got a set of 3g's but unfortunatly they are one piece. Still should be a good upgrade from standard.

The problem I have is is that the bolts that hold the caliper to the adaptor have allen key heads which are much taller than they would be if they were just normal socket set heads. Haven't fitted them yet, but I think they may just about foul on the inside of my wheels, so I was going to try and switch them...

As John says - a lot of those bolts will be grade 8 or less, and if they are chromed it makes them even weeker... So its a good idea to check on the steel grade of the bolts you get...

You may be ok on your wheels. I have 342mm discs on mine and a slightly larger caliper and they clear both sets of track 17s that I have (OZ Superturismo and Azev A)

Paddy, the discs are basic 330 mm ( or whatever the size is Brembos, but for the F40, as they have CAST holes in them ,these really are pukka bits, as they have floating discs & the bells ).

the whole lot was a TI special, the quality from the firm that made them was top notch, however one minor thing is that the outer pads have to have 2 - 3mm of the outer edge cut away, as it otherwise clashes with the rotor, not big issue, as i did them at work & then repainted, but the stopping even on OEM Alfa pads is quite something & NO SQUEAL ever \:\)

john, your right - Just!

Just did a mock up fit with the old 305 mm discs on to see if the wheels would clear the calipers.
They clear the bolts that I was woried about fine, as the wheel has a bigger radus further away from the face of the wheel. The clearance of the caliper is smallest at the front where the radius goes down... But its all good - min 2 mm clearance everywhere.

Can't wait to get all bits I need and fit them properly!

Just a further thing on the bolts - I have looked at the oe items, and they are all marked 10.9, so this mus be the correcy grade for braking compoents.
Cheers
