Superspool and pace... Advice

Superspool and pace... Advice - 20/10/2010 17:38

Looking at buying a Superspool and pace fmic.

A standard Superspool (55 trim) with pace = circa 285-300?
Change compressor to 60 trim = 310-325?
Change compressor to 62 trim = 320-340?

Does this sound about right?
Will the pace (entry/exit same side) cope?

Can I get (and if so how much) a replacement compressor wheel and fit it myself? (been in motor trade 30+ years!) But its a long time since I worked on turbo mods.

I know there are many of you technical guys out there so I'll sit back and wait!

Thanks

Dont get the Pace FMIC, it's only designed for the standard turbo and boost level.

There was one on my old Coupe when I bought it along with a 60 trim hybrid running 1.3 bar at the inlet manifold.

The pressure build up before the intercooler was so much that it killed the bearings in the turbo, just couldnt get the air through fast enough.

The pace fmic an superspool turbo are a good mild upgrade, I your looking for more power, you need a bigger intercooler with exit and entry either side of the core. As for the turbo itself it's capable of Upto a near 300bhp with correct breathing mods. It can be sent off and the compressor wheel changed to either a 60 trim or a 62trim depending upon your desired level of tune.

60 trim hybrid and a pro alloy FMIC would be my choice, or a GT28R or RS/R if you get a full exhaust for it.

It's the pace smic with a chargecooler that people have had success with up to 300bhp, not the fmic.

Mines a superspool with a evo front mount its 304 bhp
it did have a pace intercooler on it and felt like it was asmathic breathing through a straw but that was before mapping i would steer clear of a pace fmic.

evo6 or better still as they fit easier but dear a pro alloy

Re: Superspool and pace... Advice - 21/10/2010 09:15

not sure what my superspool is they are mostly 55 trim iv not had it spec'd up but I think they are all 55 Trim the superspools as far as i know its........

50 trim ULTRASPOOL
55 trim SUPERSPOOL
60 trim GTIR
62 trim STAGE 3 HYBRID (biggest possible before swapping the std turbo for a gt28rs style roller bearing propper jobby)

Re: Superspool and pace... Advice - 21/10/2010 09:22

the 'superspool' turbo is a 55 trim.

Barbs came up with it years ago, as a entry level hybrid which maintains the spool up of the standard turbo, hence its name.

you cant change compressor wheel without maching the comp housing, best to get the turbo sent away for this work, and they will balance it with its new larger comp wheel also.

The double pass Pace fmic was always a poor design and a legacy created by forum users back in the day when no intercoolers were available for the coupe.

It was strange why Pace, who created the chargecooler and smic combination that worked nicely went on to build such a poor intercooler.

I'd avoid it if I were you, the quick spooling turbo will be ruined by the lag creating poor flowing intercooler.

How about a pace fmic and GT28R?

The Pace IC isn't fussy what turbo it's strapped to, it will still create lag if it was fitted to the space shuttle.

if you are prepared for the turbo to go pop then why just get a decent intercooler - cheaper in the long run.

I'd just run a bar of boost on the stock IC until you can get a decent one on the car.

A turbo should last more than 30K easily.

With a restrictive IC you will likely have to run more boost to get the same power....

Up to you really, but IMO if you are going to tune then do it properly - there are no shortcuts in the long term.

if it really is pants after you've fitted it, keep the piping and fit a new IC core, you'd probably need a u bend and some extra piping though

I took the pace off because it was PANTS I put a evo6 one on and sold the pace that came on the car when I bought it.
