Quick Speaker Wiring Q - 09/03/2006 21:15

My new front speakers have + and - terminals and the wires are marked black and red/black, which goes with which?

Thanks!

ah this old chesnut. Many times I have thought about noting the Coupe speaker wiring, but forget.
This diagram will help:-
Clarion ISO
You can then identify the correct pins and then the wire colour. Oh yes and do write it down and post it here, this is a common question.

Not sure how this helps me? It would only give speaker wire 1 vs 2 not + -?

Does it actually matter which way round I do it so long as I am consistent?

Thanks John that would be great.

Does it actually matter if I get the polarity right or not so long as they're all the same?

the best thing to do is wire both speakers up differantly, then use the ballance and fade adjustment on the head unit, 1 speaker will sound good and the other won't. this is because it will be out of phase.

it will do no harm at all to your speakers, all the out of phase speaker will do is in short work backwards. (will be playing excurtion instead of incurtion) and just sound muffled.

Have you fitted them rufus? Was I right?

I had already fitted them by guesswork and they sound OK. I'll be taking them out again soon to fit some sound proofing and I'll do your test when I refit them.

How bad will they sound if wrong will it be obvious? Thanks

I wouldn't have thought that there is a diference that you can hear. It won't sound as loud with two speakers out of phase, but I doubt that one would sound "better".

if you play with the ballance and fader. and play each speaker on it's own, there is a noticeable differance, when one of them is out of phase. when i got my alfa, and i came to fit a new head unit, all of the wires had been cut, so when i was hard wireing in my new iso block, i used that technique, and although it was time consuming, it sounded spot on.

another thing you can do is download a phase test and again, play it on each speaker induvidualy

The main rule is :
RED: +
Black or Red with Black stripe: - Ground

Follow the rule and you will be fine.
On the HU you might have like : green / green black stripe , that means green is + and the one with stripe minus.
Full color plus , black stripe minus.
