Keyfob Options - M99TFA

My keyfob is broken, and the fob battery is also probably flat, so I am wondering what the best option would be to get remote central locking back in working order. Should I get a new fob (is it possible?) or just replace the whole alarm system?

Any recommendations?

Circular keyfobs are available, but you must have a code card. if you want a proper alarm then get a toad. If you want to be a considerate neighbour then disable the siren and get a new fob.

I seem to remember being told that the cards were not available for UK cars? A bit confusing, because I also know that the previous owner had a new fob made up. It was a Fiat one, and the three-ridged button disintegrated.

I think I'll try repairing everything first. See how it goes.

There are no spares for the rectangular fob
The only way to get a new one programmed is to have the 16 digit code and that will be a round one. I thought it was the the alarm cut off key that was removed for UK cars, but I may well be wrong. I have a code card for the alarm.

What I am after is a non alarm keyfob replacement that has a separate lock and un lock button and a boot release button too. The I could add a boot popper. As you may guess I am not too keen on alarms.

I think the fob would actually still work, with new batteries and a bit of repair. But if someone has a rectangular Fiat fob they no longer use, I could do a transplant.

After my Meta fob packed up (perished rubber), I thought I'd try and fit the guts in one of these Clifford jobbies I had from a previous car.



Had to slightly dremmel out an inner edge of centre frame so the Meta's board would fit, but it did the job.

Alarm now armed/disarmed by the boot popper button - but hey it works!

Seen these clifford fobs listed and sell on ebay for as little as a couple of quid.

i may give this sort of thing ago myself too. If the batteries complety die, will it need reprogramming?

I hope not - I took mine out. Of course, you have to take them out to replace them, so I imagine it should be ok.

Actually, looking around on the internet I see that these fobs do need to be reprogrammed if the battery goes completely flat, or is kept out of the fob for too long. It sounds like mine has had it, and I don't have the code card.

If you do go down the 'clifford fob' route it uses the same batteries from the Meta fob. Everything from inside the meta fits inside the Cliff'

When my fob packed in I had the alarm reprogrammed and two new fobs made up for it.

No, you don't need the card if you are going to reprogram the alarm. But where did you have it done, and how much?

If I have to replace the original Meta alarm central box, do other makes plug into the same socket, or do I need to replace a lot more of the system?

I may be following the same route, that seems fairly reasonable to me.

I just emailed Sam at Abacuscaralarms. He charges fccuk members £89, for reprogramming the alarm, supplying two new fobs, and the code card. Doesn't sound bad.

BTW - Sam has just explained to me that the coding of the keyfob is not lost when its batteries are flat, or out. So it is always worth trying your existing setup before sending off to get it all reprogrammed. There is still hope.

OK - good news for all aspiring keyfob restorers. It works.

I put some new batteries in the fob and plugged the alarm box back into the car and it worked - after about a ten-second delay. So the fob works even if the batteries have been flat, or out, for a long time. I found the connection for the siren, but chose not to connect it up.

Now I just need a new fob casing, as the button has been lost from the original.

No - if you want to get your alarm box recoded and have two new fobs supplied, he'll do that from scratch, and supply a new code card.

You only need your existing code card to recode your fob to the existing box.

If your fob is working, I'd suggest getting a spare, and coding it to the existing setup.

"Remote Fobs:
If a remote fob stops functioning first replace the batteries, if it still does not work it may have gone out of sync with the main alarm ( the fob changes it’s code every time the button is pressed) try re-programming it back into the alarm, to do this you will need a working fob, follow these instructions:

1. With a working fob arm and disarm the alarm sixteen times or until the alarm stops responding, alarm now in program mode.
2. Once in program mode press the button of the new remotes(s), press the button of the original remote(s). This must be done within 8 seconds of each action. If 8 seconds pass without any actions the alarm will automatically exit programming mode and you will have to start from step 1.
3. Wait 8 seconds to exit learning mode.
4. Test remotes. "

I haven't got any fobs with my coupe and I was going to do the deal with Abacus Alarms. However, I can't find my alarm box behind the fuses in the driver's footwell and there isn't a sensor next to the courtesy light...

Do you reckon its possible that no alarm was ever fitted? (Weird if so as the option list states it as standard) The siren is present in the engine bay & there are detectors in the cabin.

Perhaps I'm just not looking hard enough?? All I want it for is remote locking!

You have a meta alarm. The alarm box is part of the siren I think and the Meta is a radio coded alarm so does not have the sensor near the courtesy light.

Scanned original Meta M99 instruction manual supplied with my LE - which I have had from new.

I have included the full contents which does cover some other Fiat/Alfa models. Hope it is of some use.

It came with the rectangular fobs which had one button (three diagonal stripes).
