Sell as whole or break?

Sell as whole or break? - 19/07/2011 17:56

Big decision time here. After owning my electric blue plus for a year and throwing money at it wherever possible Im now faced with the fact I cant afford to run it anymore the question is do I break it or sell it as a whole and I really need some good advice and help with this one. I will tell you about the car first.

Its a plus with original interior and skirts and front bumper with all the carpet extensions and cargo net and other net in boot but without the plus wheels.
It has Azev C 17s all round. Its taxed. Its tested and it has complete specialist service history. Its been looked after and gone over ridiculously by Johnny (MCS) and Joe (FCSS) this year. It has so many new parts its ridiculous!
Oh and its modified to run at 1.3 bar producing 317bhp and the only thing restricting it for that last bit of power is the downpipe which is standard.

Performance parts fitted this last year include -
Bilstein shocks
Pro Alloy Front Mount
Stage 3 Hybrid Turbo
3.8 FPR
Blitz Indcution kit
55K Hids
FCSS Lowering Springs
Official HKS Blow off Valve
Flea Live Map

Performance Parts fitted before include a powerflow exhaust system with drop in and out decat pipe, greddy boost controller fitted under centre console, walbro fuel pump.

I might be missing things but these are what I can remember!

Normal parts fitted this year include new theromstat and temp sensor, new valeo radiator, aircon parts replaced and gassed, new wishbones and drop links, rear arms repaired, mtec drilled rear discs and fancy pads I cant remember, top mounts and bearings, rocker gasket, handbrake cables, fuel pump wiring mod, oil and filters changed, new brake lines all round, replaced drive shaft, inner gaitor, replaced gear knob and steering wheel with lower mileage versions still plus.

Clutch and belts have been done just over a year ago.

I may have missed things. Car would need new front discs/pads in next few thoudand miles and a slight weep of oil from clutch slave - next jobs but mechanically thats it! Holds no lower than 2.5 bar oil pressure. Drivers seat worn on bolster but still has strength and not gone lumpy.

Bodywork - one light cup starting to go a bit funny and a small mark on edge of rear quarter. Arches need attention as there is some rust creeping in but car was inspected by Johnny and told it was one of the good ones! Flew through last mot no welding of anything required! Front bumper needs paint on splitters as I caught them and had got it painted recently but its very low! Bonnet has stone chips, skirts need some attention but generally its good but I like things perfect. Few dings here and there but no unsightly scratches!

Soooo what can I expect as a whole and what can I expect in bits and I mean EVERTHING from instruments to carpet bits do my front mount and how hard is it to break?

Here goes....

Sell as a whole, this Coupe is a really nice example and far to good to break imo.

I know Joe but I have to think on a money basis as you well know frown

Re: Sell as whole or break? - 19/07/2011 18:32

engine sounds a gem
im sure youd get good money, but again parts will bring in the cash too if you can be bothered with stripping it
sad to see it stripped though'

Re: Sell as whole or break? - 20/07/2011 10:34

In bitd the cars worth prob 3k with the mods.
but that said its also prob worth 3-4k to someone looking for a nice example.
Breaking is a pain and you need the room, tools and patience with the folk wanting parts,.
In standard form the plus is fetching 2500-3000 so in your case 3500 is a price you should be aiming for,.

That said, you have one of the best plus's so if you can avoid selling it financially then i would hang on to it.

When you say "best" do you mean colour?

a lot of people will tell you, keep the car as a whole, it's to nice to break it etc which i don't doubt it is and as an owner myself i don't like the fact that perfectly good cars are being broken to sell but i think the sad fact at the mo is that they are worth more in bits than they are as a whole

the other thing you could do is to take all the goodies off it, i.e. the turbo, exhaust, any boost controllers etc and sell them and put the standard stuff back on and then just sell the car as standard

this of course assumes that you have the skill to do this as if you need to start paying people to take the stuff off for you then you would be better selling it as a whole

I agree with doug, its easy for people to say keep it as whole. But its not their pocket that is taking the damage. At the end of the day the car is going from you one way or another, might as well make the most money you can.

Re: Sell as whole or break? - 20/07/2011 12:26

You could sell the bits off and make more money, or sell the bits off and return to standard, then sell the car.
Selling the car as a complete sale will net you the least amount but will be much easer.

having broke a car for bits, I wouldn't do it again

Re: Sell as whole or break? - 20/07/2011 12:28

yes its a pain in the backside, and probably wouldnt make you that much more.

In my case I made a bucket load more breaking it, and I could have made more but didn't bother with loads of little bits.

If it were me i'd return it to standard. You'll likely still get £3k for the standard car, and have many valuable mods to sell, which will sell very quickly on here. They are all bolt on parts and the standard part replacements will be cheap.

All complete estimates:
Car = £3k
Bilstein shocks = £300
Pro Alloy Front Mount = £300
Stage 3 Hybrid Turbo = £350-£400
3.8 FPR = £50
Blitz Indcution kit = £80
55K Hids = £30
FCSS Lowering Springs = £100
HKS Blow off Valve = £50
Flea Live Map = £0
Powerflow exhaust system with drop in and out decat pipe = £250-£300
greddy boost controller = £150
walbro fuel pump = £60

replacement airboxes with filters go for £10, dump valves are cheap, cat back exhaust £50, standard bulbs (you may still have or £15), full stanadard suspension £50-£100, standard turbo £50, standard SMIC £30?

Assuming you have none of the standard parts left, it'd cost you less than £300 for the standard bits, but you'd make around £1500 in parts and the price of the car. They're all bolt on bits and relatively easy to access and then replace.

Surely that's the best of both worlds?

is all that going to realistically make it much cheaper to run? his issue is the cost of running it and although he'd get a one-off hit of cash he will also cheapen the car.

my view is break it and i'll give you a good price for the engine wink

gunzi was suggesting putting the car back to standard then selling! Keep up proccy wink

oh yes, sorry gunzi - but my offer for his engine still stands laugh

Re: Sell as whole or break? - 20/07/2011 15:17

Thanks for the ideas guys. Still mulling it all over as we speak. I do think though it is worth more in bits but I do not have the skills to do this so would have to get someone to help me frown And not sure how I would go about that. Sourcing standard parts and getting them fitted is time consuming and I dont think it would sell for much standard so just leaves selling as a whole frown

Re: Sell as whole or break? - 20/07/2011 15:18

But surprised that the first parts people want are my front bumper and the engine! laugh

Erm, cough...

http://www.fiatcoupeclub.org/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1234328#Post1234328

Back on topic, sell it whole, too good to break. And if you've not got the ability to revert to standard and sell off the modified parts, then that seals the decision!

Re: Sell as whole or break? - 17/10/2011 20:35

Good idea, let someone else appreciate it. I bet it's a bit of a beast with all those mods!

Re: Sell as whole or break? - 17/10/2011 20:37

VERY driveable. Its definitely set up to a be a fast road car. Tuning wise other than a downpipe and some uprated anti roll bars it doesnt need anything else!

Re: Sell as whole or break? - 17/10/2011 20:42

BTW I will consider a part ex as I still need a car just something thats cheaper to run is all and is at least as economical as a coupe.

Nah, but anything to help lol!

Ideally i'd love a second coupe that's reliable though

Re: Sell as whole or break? - 17/10/2011 21:06

You will have to pm the details so I can look over it all? Touvh wood...mine hasnt broken down once as yet or had any massive mechanical failure....just niggly things. Majority of cost has come from modifications and the rest maintenance. Typical really...all the hard work for someone else to benefit from frown

Re: Sell as whole or break? - 17/10/2011 21:11

I'd love it, but I have to be honest and say that your car is worth more than the BMW and i have no cash to make it up frown

If JBT values it at over £3k then its at least £1k more than my beemer grr

Re: Sell as whole or break? - 26/10/2011 00:04

As my mind stands at the moment Im looking at reverting this to standard and selling every modified part thats on there cosmetic and performance as I feel noone at all wants to buy a modified plus but they like modified parts evil Weird really but looks like people like to do their own modifiying regardless if it costs them an extra few thousand in the process! smile
