Yellow 20VT on Autotrader - £2500 AVOID! - 25/08/2006 05:14

If you're thinking of going to have a look at the yellow "1998 FIAT Coupe 20V Turbo" with the following description "R reg. 59000 miles, excellent condition, new timing belt, alarm, mul-T-lock, must be seen. £2,500. ono" then save yourself the trouble and don't waste your time like i did today.

Its had 7 owners, half of which have no history against them, it was filthy with badly corroded discs, the interior is tatty, the a/c is non functioning, it smokes on idle, its not been properly serviced since he's had it saying that he just does his own oil changes and the cam belt was done by a non specialist who didn't seem to have a clue.

In short - AVOID like the plague.

Suspect it's fairly typical of non-enthusiast owned 20vt priced at £2500

Yeah, no such thing as a free lunch. Although on the same night I put a deposit down for a mint late '98 Sprint Blue 20VT going for only £600 more. Pick it up in a few weeks.

There is a Green T Reg 20VT on autotrader at the moment for £1995 in North London that I reckon is much worse. I wasted the train ticket to look at it the other week. To say the pics flatter it is an understatement:

1) The centre console is completely missing.
2) Every panel is dented, scratched and with crazed paint
3) The bumpers are cracked.
4) The leather seats are a) disgustingly dirty b) completely worn out
5) the tyres were rubbish etc etc etc.

I never asked about service history etc I looked at it for 30 seconds and walked away. It is really sad that a £25k car can be completely neglected.

I'm genuinely surprised that anyone expects to see FSH, specialist servicing, few owners, etc, on a £2,500 car. It seems as though people still see it as a £25,000 investment in their minds?

I paid £650 for my non-starting 16v. I've cleaned it up & got it running. It'll get new bearings, new cambelt, new pads (oh, and a new alternator. D'oh!)... But there's a lot of rust under the bonnet and let's face it- If the gearbox explodes I won't be investing in a replacement.

That's just how it is now that the coupe is moving into this price bracket. I've seen it with other car clubs- If you want the best, you'd be well advised to shop within the club IMHO.

But I don't think it's fair to say "Avoid this car!" in this particular case - I think you might be expecting too much.

Good post but! If you have been given the impression its in a reasonable condition then its only fair to expect this is the case if you take time out to travel to see it don't you think?
