Help please.... How much would my coupe be worth - 22/12/2005 19:55

As most of you know i was involved in a bad accident and finally things have started moving.

My solicetor has asked me to write to them with how much my car is worth so they can put a report together and send it to the garage that did the work on my car.

Right heres the details:

1997 Sprint Blue 20v turbo
1114k
Full leather interior
Manifold replaced few months back
New rad
Full set of breaks replaced, New set of toyos only a thousand miles wear.
LE Skirts,
Chipped
This car had been looked after and was a very good example of a coupe, as commented on numberous occasions.

I dont know if I have left anything off, but it has full reciepts of all the work that the car has had and see pic below.

http://www.fiatforum.com/gallery/data/500/medium/2376DSC00403.JPG

I need the cost on how much it would be to replace the car.

Thank you guys

I don't want to be the first to comment on that mileage, so I won't

Re: Help please.... How much would my coupe be worth - 22/12/2005 20:03

With that sort of mileage you are going to looking at around £2500 - 3000. Maybe go for £3000 due to its history.

You're best bet is to go through autotrader and exchange and mart - printing off as many like models you can find

i know the mileage is high... i bought it at 96k i am looking at top end price. It will be the garage that will be footing the bill (hopefully)

H said eventhough my car had the mileage piled on it felt more solid than his car which has about 78k on it

Re: Help please.... How much would my coupe be worth - 22/12/2005 20:20

yeah, but thats the sort of thing impossible to get across to an insurance company.

The thing to do is to find similar cars of age, mileage, etc - then show examples of all your receipts for recent work and try to build up the price as far as possible. So if there in one for sale with no cambelt change, then yours is that value plus your receipt for cambelt. The insurance company will obvisouly try and beat you down as far as they can, so just try to feed them as much info on the price as you can.

Yes but at 1114k , Fiat would probably buy it back from you as a shining example of the marque, didn't some guy with an ordinary car recently hit a million miles and the manufacturer gave him a brand new car for it and put the old one in their museum?

(Sorry Sammi, just teasing! I'm in holiday mode today!)

I don't think you wil get too much added value for things like the new tyres as they're consumables and you'd have to buy them anyway, but I'd have thought you should be angling somewhere in the £5k region (that's £5k, not £555k )

Re: Help please.... How much would my coupe be worth - 22/12/2005 20:33

It just concerns me that the coupes at the lower end prices are going to be sheds, there are some people that buy the car and run it as cheap as possible.. I will be looking at the cars that have been looked after and has history.

Hopefully i will be able to buy another one next year

Re: Help please.... How much would my coupe be worth - 22/12/2005 21:20

Cars for sale in here is probably your best bet for a fair comparison.

At the moment you've got Bezzer's coupé, he's the third forum owner so its been well looked after and it appears all the major work has been done recently. Has a few mods too, but by his own admonishment, the body isn't A1
That's up @ £4400 99 T 73k

JayD's has leather and air and all the major stuff also seems to be done and he says the body is excellent. I reckon its underpriced at £4500 98 R 68k

With your mileage I reckon you would be looking at 4K tops if your lucky

Re: Help please.... How much would my coupe be worth - 22/12/2005 21:29

I think what they are trying to get at Sammi is that 1114k miles is 1,114,000 miles.

I would assume you meant 114k, but you know how pedantic this lot are.

Re: Help please.... How much would my coupe be worth - 22/12/2005 21:50

yes - sorry i meant 114k - the extra 1 was a typo

I'll have a route about and find the paperwork of the work that has been done.

Its a shame though cos I wouldnt have even thought about selling it for many years

Re: Help please.... How much would my coupe be worth - 22/12/2005 21:59

Sammi, I've just had a quick look on AT for 20VT's same age and mileage as yours and some are going for as little as £2.5K and as high as £4K

Definately worth you spending some time on the net getting as many comparisons as you can.

Re: Help please.... How much would my coupe be worth - 22/12/2005 23:46

I think you are looking at about £3K, maybe £3.5K tops. Our coupe's were similar in cond and mileage and I doubt I'd get more than £3.5K for mine. High mileage coupe's just aren't worth as much, regardless of maint.

The fact your car has a new manifold or radiator etc is irrelevant to an insurance company. It has high miles and is old (97), id say you'd get book value of about 2.5K for it.

Your best bet is to sue the garage if their negligence caused the accident, dont expect too much from an insurance company.

Even though all the above replies may be correct Sammi. The solicitor is asking YOU to write and tell them how much your car is worth. It's up to them to dispute it.

Your car was luvverly. Tell them basic models are going for 4k or whatever but you had had skirts and colour coding and the manifold replaced at whatever expense to you etc and that in your opinion it's worth £xx.00 don't volunteer anything else and see what the response is

Re: Help please.... How much would my coupe be worth - 01/01/2006 01:56

Did you tell your insurance company about the modifacations to your car(skirts and chip)when you did them?
If you did not tell them about these, your insurance will not be valid as its now a modified car. If this is the case then you do not want to tell them about the extra you spent on these mods or you could be in the s**t.

Re: Help please.... How much would my coupe be worth - 01/01/2006 04:20

Sammi just to give you an insite to what the insurance company will be seeing in terms of value in accordance to Glasses - I have access to the traders Glasses book. Only use these figures to give you an insight to what they will probably try to pay out - the following value is with the 114k miles - as mentioned before the add ons are not taken into account:

'Excellent Condition' (what the trader will try to pay you for it) - £2240
'Retail Value' Trader will try to sell at - £3920 with 3/6 months warrenty and finance etc.

So there's the values - up to you how to play it but £3k to £3.5k would be reasonable.

The following are what the values are based on:

Quote:

Excellent condition:
Ready for retail sale; mechanically perfect, paintwork unblemished for a vehicle under two years old, but may have slight stone damage on a vehicle over two years old or with high mileage. Interior should be immaculate. A full service history must be provided. All equipment fitted should be fully operational. Tyres should be new or nearly new, wheels and trims clean and undamaged. If appropriate, the MOT Certificate must be for a minimum of nine months.

Retail Value:
The 'dealer asking price' or 'windscreen price'. It is not necessarily the price a consumer would actually pay, as it may be the subject of negotiation, discount or an extra allowance on the value of your own car. It will also vary depending on any special offers applicable at the time, condition, length of warranty and any options and extras that may be fitted.

Re: Help please.... How much would my coupe be worth - 03/01/2006 01:27

Thanks again

Just to point out..... the claim isnt going through the insurance. The only time the insurance have been involved is to confirm that the car was insured at the time of the accident.

Yes this is what this is all about.... sueing the garage that misfitted the bearing.

I am looking into the prices myself - i had to do this when i wrote off my bravo a few years ago. I want to come back with the best examples i can.

The report confirmed it was caused by the way the bearing was fitted. I have the report and asked the engineer to email me a copy so i could keep a copy on the PC and email out.

What did it say though, was over/under tightened ?

I'm just curious as to how they can get such a simple job wrong.

Re: Help please.... How much would my coupe be wor - 07/01/2006 02:53

I would be interested in the answer as I changed mine yesterday, took 45 minutes & I cannot see how it could be done incorrectly, unless as stated they either didn't tighten it enough or overtighten'd & damaged the bearing.

Re: Help please.... How much would my coupe be wor - 07/01/2006 20:24

Right, don't quote me on this, as I don't have the report to hand, but the jist of the report was that there was no indication of weakness of the bearing component - e.g. it hadn't run out of lubricant.
A chamfering of the brake pads on that side of the car indicated that there had been some prior movement. (The rear brake pads had been changed on both sides of the car at the same time as the bearing was done). There was no chamfering of the brake pads on the other side of the car.
Investigations as to the required size and placement of washers either side of the bearing had been inconclusive.
That's pretty much the jist of the report.

Mate ask for what price you want for your car, be it reasonable but inflate it so its accurate, don't take second best, if its not going through insurance you want the price it would cost you to get a replacement in the same condition. To some extent ignore the mileage its the cost to replace with an identical specimen. Hammer the [***] out of em. Otherwise your left out of pocket and fat buisness man has another drink on you at the golf course!

Sorry, not prepared to reveal that at this point in order not to unfairly prejudice any action which may follow. However, I would think that any specialist recommended on this forum can be trusted.
