Red LE, 36,500 Miles, £5999! - 06/05/2006 04:57

(on Autotrader at the moment).

amazing how these cars are getting cheaper and cheaper. No wonder they're not selling for the 8 grand (or more) that some people are still asking!

If 6 grand will buy you this f'in beauty, the latest Coupe Plus out there can surely only go for about 8!?

When I started looking about a month ago I was prepared to pay £10,000 for the right Plus. But now? Jease you've gotta be kidding! (That'd be like being mugged)! It's one thing paying above book price, but then try SELLING it again!

Blimey. One thing's for sure; these Coupes are amazing cars for the money. I drove one today, for the first time since 1999. (and by coincidence saw 2 in St Albans town centre, in one day)!

My god, they might not be luxurious, but they're certainly a driver's car! By 'today's' standards they're like stripped out racing cars! No fuss, no gimmicks, no padding, no bollocks. Just style, charisma and raw power.

Gorgeous.

bet they will put the price up when they realise what they are selling and the phone hasn't stopped ringing.

No! I'm still looking DavidC...

there aren't many coming up and the ones that are for sale seem to be for sale forever!

All i'm waiting for, is a Plus, no mods, fsh about 40000 miles and mint. With a cared-for and 'understood' engine. (eg had it's oil topped up replaced with the right stuff)...

There's a few around, on 'trader and fromvarious private offers, for around 7k, but I honestly think they're on a downhill spiral of depreciation right now. And for that money, the miles are just too high. If i'm buying a car that'll have over 100,000 miles 18 months from now, I have to accept that it'll be worth next to nothing then. 7k is a lot to lose in that time.

That's why i'm looking for 40000 miles, as i'll sell it with around 65,000 and it'll still be worth 4 or 5 grand, so i'll only lose about 2 or 3.

As much as I love the Coupe, I'm reluctant to pay above book price for what I want, as I know no one else will do the same when I come to sell. And i'll be out of pocket by more than the 'ownership experience' has justified.

Shame that sellers are holding on to 'yesteryears' prices; hoping to sell while the cars are stillnot too old, knowing that they're simply going to plummit any day now.

That's my instinct, and opinion on the state of the Coupe market, but I supose time will tell ...

anyway, still looking, yes! I'll pay book price for any Plus that fits the bill, but not above. I had previously not cared as I saw how active this forum is, and that there's a few out there - but having seem how static and ammbitious the market is at the more expensive end, i'm glad I didn't pay 9 or 10 for one a month ago.

cheers for now, and please tell us how you get on with yours! I'm so envious that you've got one now, but i'm resisting to just buy one, without it being right. (or if it's not 'right' to buy one unless it's priced accordingly).

Check out Parkers:

Fiat Coupé
20V Turbo Plus 2d 2000/X
Insurance Group 20
Average mileage: 50,000 miles

Cost New ('00) £ 24754
Franchised Dealer £ 6125
Independent Dealer £ 5490
Private Good £ 4860
Private Poor £ 3505

So 'private good' is £4860. If it's had it's cambelt changed recently, hads some other bits changed, got a new MOT and needs no other work then i'd make that £5500. If it's in the 40000 miles range, and not the 50000 range as in the guide, i'd another 500.

That's a 6 grand car i'm afraid, but unfortunately most are V or W reg, and not X. So in that instance they're not even worth that.

Saying that, i'm still realistic, and so 6k sounds about right now, but 7k + would be reserved for a very special 'timewarp' type car.

And with 70000 or 80000 miles? Well, about 4k, as with 100k next year it wont' be worth 3.

A car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. An LE/Plus seems to be the model most wanted so a good one may well fetch more than book price - but then it may take much longer to sell.

Book prices for low volume models are notoriously crap so wouldn't put too much emphasis on them.

Scoob's right.

Don't forget too a car's what someone's willing to pay - but prices often depend on how keen a seller is to sell quickly.

Dealers don't want cars hanging around on forecourts for longer than they can help it. It can often be a different story privately. People may be in a rush to get rid but if you're not you don't have to give a decent car away for a song.

When I flog mine I'll ask a fair price but won't be in any hurry to get rid.

If a Coop has been looked after and is known on here, the buyer shouldn't take too much of a hit - particularly in a year or two's time when there'll be even fewer about.

I reckon in the next few years most people who are looking for a Coop will be looking for it on here.

I really can't see a "plummet" in prices. These cars are dirt cheap as it is and in the 6 months I have been keeping my eye out for a 20VT 6 I am sure I have seen the prices rise; I remember when I first started coming to this forum 12 months ago and somebody was selling a Blue Plus for £8,000. There were no other coupes on autotrader for that money but now there are 4 at similar money, and 7 at over £7,000 and not all of them are the Plus or LE models (4 are the 20VT 6)

I was HOPING to pay around £5,000 for a 20VT 6, because 6 months ago there were plenty going for that money. Now they're on autotrader for between £6k and £7.5k! I was about to give up until my dad phoned me to say he'd been offered a Plus for £4.5k! I reckon that's pretty much the steal of the decade with the current market, although Parker's would disagree (and so did my Dad until I showed him what they were going for...he told me he wanted it for £3,300!)

Maybe the cars aren't worth 8K and maybe they're not actually being sold for that money in the end, but if you can find a good (or bad for that matter) X reg Plus with 50k miles from a private seller for £4,900 you've found a bargain. How Parker's have come up with this figure is beyond me. I very much doubt a Plus with low miles like Parker's example is being sold anywhere for less than £6,000 minimum.

Parker's figures for this car are wrong, plain and simple. You only have to look on autotrader, here and eBay for the proof

That LE did look like a good price but I'm guessing it's priced high according to Parker's
