car not fixed yet , can i keep courtesy car ? - 10/07/2012 18:51

long story short i got a settlement to fix my car myself and had a coutesy car which i was promised i would have till my car was fixed, and was also not made aware of the fact that now they have paid into my account i gave up the right to the car

obviously i would not have accepted to be without wheels for upto 2 weeks for a poxy 1100 quid , cost me almost that to hire a car , surely i should get the courtesy car till mine is fixed as i was told i would and because i wasnt made aware that accepting the payout means they close the case an take the courtesy car off hire

i have told them that they should be aware all their calls are recorded as they like to warn us and i dont mind them digging back and finding the fact they said i would have a car till it was fixed and that i was never made aware of any other situation

Unfortunately that is standard practise.

The courtesy car is supplied until the car is fixed or in the case of a settlement. They've settled with you and the courtesy car ends.

Unless they specifically agreed you could have it longer, I don't think you'll get anywhere.

Yes, as Ross has said, as they've settled, the courtesy car has to go back.

If you'd agreed for them to arrange for it to be fixed at their approved garage, you'd have been able to have the courtesy car for as long as it took, but as you've settled on an agreed amount, the case becomes closed, the courtesy car has to go back and it's down to you to sort your own transport out while your car undergoes repairs.

Yes this is totally standard practice.

At the end of the day once a settlement is agreed whether you are keeping the salvage or not any hire vehicle is collected back. The reference to having a courtesy car/hire car until your car is fixed is when you actually have the car fixed by the insurer, which you are not.

Wow £1100 for a 2 week hire car, what were you getting, a Ferrari or something? No need to spend more than £100 surely?

dont know dave was more of a rant but from what i have heard its going to take a larghe portion of what i have been paid out

i was promised i would have a car till mines was fixed , then their engineer who to be fair directline have been great with me and i got what i think is a good amount but its soon to be negated when i fork out for a hire car of which i wasnt made aware of that i wouldnt have

if this is how it is then not much i can do , if i was made aware of it first hand and had a chance to make arrangements to get some transport till mine is fixed it wouldnt have been so bad ,

anyone want to lend me their coupe for a couple of weeks smile

I think expecting your insurer to lend you a car while you take your sweet time to carry out repairs yourself is a bit much. I guess you have some kind of argument for the time that the insurance company would have taken to do repairs, but they now have no control on how long repairs take. What if you are lazy, and it takes you 3 months?
