Tyres in respect of T&C's of Insurance - 07/08/2016 11:22

I have read my T&C's in regard to my Coupe's Insurance.

Something that i noticed, was the Tyres.

As Z rated tyres do not really exsist anymore and are replaced with W or Y rated speed rating, i note that my rear tyres are 205/50/ZR16 91W and my front tyres are 205/50/R16 87V

Do my front tyres comply..? As the rears mention a Z in ZR16 91W..? V being not the same as W / Y rated in respect of the Z rating.

Opinions / advice much appreciated..

I have found the answer out courtesy of Camskill. Being ZR is better than R as sidewall is more reinforced on the tyre, but speed ratings W and Y took over from the Z rating and well surpass the V rating.

I replaced all 4 tyres earlier this year and chose to go with a lower rating tyre, the one that can only perform up to 149mph as it was quite a big difference in price. It does not cause problems for my insurance as I checked, though yours might say differently, and I would therefore think having different ratings on 4 different tyres wouldn't be a problem either. I suppose it's a bit like having 4 different brands on one car, not ideal, but as long as the tread is legal etc it should be ok.

Insurers have advised that mine on the front need to be ZR16 and have a W or Y speed rating and a minimum load index of 87. So the V rated, non ZR Falken Ziex's are going to be changed soon.

How silly when Mr Plod says we can only do 70MPH. Insurers lining their pockets at our expense (as usual!)

Taken 2 months for the insurer to accept that my Falken V rated tyres on the front are accepted for insurance purposes going forward, but if they are to be changed, that W or Y is fitted instead.
