Insurance for daily drivers - 22/08/2018 17:48

Chaps,

just had my renewal through for the daily drivers - Pug 307cc and Sabb 9-3 aero... it's gone up 30% since last year's multicar policy

anyone got any ideas on who I should go to for a better quote - 15 years no claims bonus, clean license etc.

really want to shortlist around 5 for me to shop to...

Thanks smile

Hi Suba,

Money talks - at that hike, I would at least go on line and check out "what" or something like that and see what competitive quotes you get off a search.

Or ring around 2/3 of the bigger names.

Tell everyone your going to place your business with the lowest price...and sit back and see what comes in?

Regards

Every year, for each car in the family fleet (6, excluding the modified 20vt), I go the 4 comparison sites (Meerkat, Annoying-tw@t-with-the-'tash, Supermarket, Confuzzled) and update accident/points history if required (!) and run through different mileages/excess options and see if something jumps out. Sometimes having a lower voluntary excess makes little difference to the premium.

It used to be that all the comparison sites pretty much came up with the same thing, but I've noticed that sometimes one of them will offer a lower premium for seemingly the same insurer and same cover, perhaps that's to do with referral payments or something, but see footnote (*).

Then click through the best ones to see if details have transferred correctly (*), also try final provider's own web site, and try others like DirectLine etc. for a laugh (sometimes hopelessly uncompetitive).

This approach is OK for non-modified cars, but in my experience although you might save in the first year when you set up a multicar policy, come renewal time the quote is just as rubbish as for individual policies renewing. I've yet to be convinced that a multicar policy make sense over time.

It depends how much time/effort you want to put in vs. the potential savings. Even trying just one comparison site will give you an indication of how (un)competitive your renewal quote is.

(*) details sometimes get mangled, there was an article the other day on BBC News

When using the comparison sites, make sure you opt out of the option for the two "best" quotes to contact (ie: hassle) you.

And I make a point of requesting that automatic renewal is removed after paying.

Also delete cookies from browser or go incognito between comparison searches as they can use look a like data and give you very similar prices

With the same occupation, excesses, mileage, driving history, named drivers, car location during day/night, etc.? Maybe the renewal quote is good then, but worth challenging them to reduce the premium.

Another thought, I used to (30 years ago?) go to a local A-Plan office where they seemed to try various brokers, I haven't used them in years but they are still going, so must be competitive in some cases?

yep - all the same.

Current renewal is through REIS (broker that also do the insurance on the RX7.) They managed to get me a very good deal last year...

I have 6 cars and all on individual policies..multi-car one's do not save me money. I don't bother with agreed value either. I have noticed that time of year influences premiums massively too.
