Is this quote reasonable?

Is this quote reasonable? - 25/04/2006 23:40

20v Turbo Plus (market value £6999)

23 years old;
6 years NCB;
No accidents or convictions in 3 or 5 years respectively;
Hertfordshire address;

£1052 Fully Comprehensive with Protected NCB.

It sounds like a lot to me; I doubt it's significantly quicker than my current car, which costs half that to insure!

Is this a bad quote, or is it just the reputation and (potential) nickability of the Coupe that does it?!

too much who have you tried?

Re: Is this quote reasonable? - 26/04/2006 00:53

currently with Privilege - phoned to ask what the adjustment would be: "no under 25's"! (fair enough).

only tried Admiral since then, as when I got my current insurance two years ago, they were the next best.

tried direct line but their online quote page is down.

any suggestions?! this under-25 thing may be a repetitive problem. I can see why they do that, but I think it should be based on NCB years rather than age. There's so many 25 year olds who are completely irresponsible beind the wheel or have no real experience- but I suppose they've gotta have a system.

Re: Is this quote reasonable? - 26/04/2006 13:38

Sounds about right for a 23 year old to me, the car is group 19 or 20 you know.

I am not sure the nickability or the coupe reputation have anything to do with, again its a group 20 car. You want cheap insurance buy a group 10 car

Re: Is this quote reasonable? - 26/04/2006 18:13

well my current car's group 18 and that's half the price.

and I was insured on an e38 750iL once for less too! and that car's a monster!

Rog,
thanks for the tip, i'll try them for sure.
I'll pay a grand what ever happens; it's just a shame - think i'm being hit somewhere along the line; the premium isn't commensurate with other cars of the same performance.

Never mind, it's beautiful, soa small price to pay

Re: Is this quote reasonable? - 26/04/2006 19:37

I'd imagine I am not the only person to think that a 750 is an ugly boat on wheels.

And I don't think that 406 is comparable with a Coop TBH, performance is quite a bit different between the two. One is a sports car the other is a lard arsed 2 door coupe dreaming taxi

...i'd imagine you're one of the few. (though you may be one of the many amongst Fiat Coupe lovers, as they're obvuisly very different machines).

I think it's the epitome of handsome; and it's graceful to boot. But it's just a matter of opinion, and I don't want to fall out with you (or anyone for that matter) over the issue! It is an interesting point, in my opinion, that the Coupe is more expensive to insure, than the 750iL. Notwithstanding it's monstrous-tendencies; be that it's power; or it's sea-worthiness!

I would agree that the 406 isn't a sports car, and that the Fiat is. But again, we'll have to disagree on your other statements! It's effortlessly powerful and if you use the whole range it is very quick too. On a race-circuit I expect the Fiat would win, due to it's 'sports car' characteristics (and provided the driver can keep it on boost). In a drag race? Close call. Beauty? Comfort? Refinement? Reliabilty? Technology? Presence? ... well, this just shows that they each have their individual qualities I think. And again, might reasonably be expected to balance out in insurance terms.

I think my original comment was fair; whereby Fiat Coupe drivers are hit by the insurers, because of the car's image and nickability. That's by no means derogatory on my part - you know I love the Fiat Coupe - (always have). So really we're on the same side here anyway!

Re: Is this quote reasonable? - 26/04/2006 20:35

Respect for a, what, 21 or 22 year old in a 750!

I had a '95 740 once, lovely machine
It had an appetite though for unleaded and very expensive 275x35x20 tyres so she had to go

I know I'm paying a lot LESS on my coop than the BMW though, although I am a little older than you

Re: Is this quote reasonable? - 26/04/2006 20:53

oh no, it belongs in the family, but it's not mine!
I was emplyed to drive someone, on and off, for about a year, back in 2002. I'm 23 by the way

I couldn't afford to buy that car: it's worth over 20 grand even now; it's a BMW Individual car, original order sheet shows it was £103,000 in 2000! Ticked every box on the options sheet plus has the customised paint/interior!

And in the four years it's been in my family, it's cost at least 2 grand a year to service at BMW. Plus tires etc which are 200 a piece!

You have to have seriously deep pockets to maintain it correctly; jease I WISH it was mine! (thanks for the 'respect' though)!

As for the Peugeot- well that's very modest in comparison, and I can afford to run that! Just had a major service including a radiator and cambelt/belts change and it was under a grand! Regular servicing: 200-300 per year, plus tires/bits n bobs etc! Very reliable car.

It's not actively for sale at the moment; i ran the ebay auction, but got no buyer. Best offer was somehting like 8k/8.5 k, can't remember. But it's too nice an example to let it go for that. There's some real tatty ones out there if you want a 2002-spec V6 for less. (interestingly, it's being featured in AutoExpress next week if anyone fancies a read).

As soon as I find the right Fiat Coupe i'll advertise it again; and i'll probably accept 9 then. It was 12k a year ago, so a bit of a bummer on the depreciation-front. Never mind eh? (try not to think about that if it's a nice ownership experience).

Re: Is this quote reasonable? - 26/04/2006 21:38

Oh that explains it then Should have got the 20" Alpinas though

Your 406 won't appreciate by the way, get as much as you can now and take the loss before it gets worse! I'd say Autotrader over ebay anytime

Re: Is this quote reasonable? - 26/04/2006 22:54

I expect you're right. But then, it's all bull when people say their car will appreciate. Last time I was looking at Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo's was in about 2002. And an R or S- plate with leather and aircon was about 6 to 8 grand. People were saying 'future classic, wise investment, (yadda yadda yadda), but look now! 4k for a lovely one that age! 8k for the best out there!

I'd say a mint low mileage 406 Coupe has as much chance as any of today's cars, of holding it's value, and possibly appreciating a little over the years. (But I don't intend to keep it to find out! No money where my mouth is here)! Still, this is the last chance-era to buy one like mine, still untouched and loved... before they get too cheap and all the plebs trash them! They've been out of production for 3 years now, so tidy ones are going to get rarer and rarer.

yes they look very aggressive and smart, but I don't think it would have suited this particular car which is slightly understated...

20" Alpina's would look incredible on a SWB e38 Sport model... besides, these Parallel spoke 18"s are 235s on the front and 255s on the back. F'in awesome wheels when they're off the car for having new tires fitted. £2850 option too, just checked the original spec sheet.

Are you a fellow BMW lover then, yellafella?!

Nope Just had that one and I *think* I got away with it.

Looking at your details I could probably get the quote in the region of £800.

Neil,

Thank you for your reply. Could you please tell me what the excess would be (Fully Comprehensive; Protected NCB) in this situation? Compulsory + Voluntary, combined.

Many thanks

If you're going to commit fraud why not just insure it as a Nissan Micra or lie about your age instead?

I just got a £597 quote with Greenlight for a 20VT Plus. I'm 26 yrs old, 6 years no claims. No points.

I'll try Noel Dazeley later today, but so far so good. It's cheaper to insure than my Alfa GT JTD was....bonus!
