Ford Probe - 24/09/2017 09:30

There is a very nice Ford Probe for sale on eBay for £675 or offers at the moment, sure to be a future classic I reckon.

The 2.5 version was the one to have as far as I can remember. The 2.0 was the kinda regarded like the Coupe 16V N/A ...... (*waits for it*)

hehe

I have never been a fan of them. Were they brought out to replace the Capri? I saw one the other day driving past work... not for me!

Re: Ford Probe - 26/09/2017 09:59

The Probe was mainly for the US market – it was intended to replace the Mustang.

I had a dirt cheap Mazda MX-6 a few years ago, which was (against expectations) a really really good car. I genuinely loved it.

The MX-6 and the Probe are the same car, with a few manufacturer-specific tweaks (different body and interior, mainly – the chassis were identical).

My MX-6 felt rapid, turned well … it was light for it’s size and had plenty of power. I had the 24 valve V6.

The previous owner swore blind it had four-wheel steering, which it didn’t. Only the Japanese models came with that. He insisted on telling me how brilliant the 4WS was anyway, and so did his wife!

Lovely car, and I expect a Probe would be the same. I had no idea I was going to like it so much.

Took me ages to remember what the Probe was like! I'd forgotten all about them. I was thinking of the Cougar till just now. shocked

Trappy! How rude! I have always liked them since seeing the advert when the man said in a low voice "PROBE!" Much nicer to look at than the Capri or any of the Escorts in my view. I don't like the Cougar very much but Probes are pretty. But then, the 80s was "my" time!

I've a bug eye Scorpio on my drive. Very ugly and its not a good specimen. But you can't see the front end while you're driving, it's a Cosworth, and perfect for a crumball rally type thing

Re: Ford Probe - 01/10/2017 09:36

When I was writing my "Fiat Coupe Buyer's Guide" that was published in Used Car Buyer magazine (October 1999) I had to compare the Coupe against other contemporary used coupe cars, with brief plus points and downsides. I chose the Alfa GTV, BMW 3 series, Honda Prelude, Nissan 200SX and Peugeot 406 Coupe. I dismissed the Ford Probe and Vauxhall Calibra rather casually as being "too much like a saloon, even tbough they've soldiered on for many years".

PS: There was an article in Car magazine April 1995 featuring the Coupe, Ford Scorpio and Alfa 145, discussing how their design features have "escaped the land of the bland for a brave new world - one in which individuality, flair and quirkiness for quirkiness's sake are the parameters of what is good" crazy

I love the GTV but you wouldn't get one for £675!

laugh

See, I absolutely love the Capri love

I've never liked any of the escorts either but I loathe the Probe.

Re: Ford Probe - 03/10/2017 05:07

In the 80s my boyfriend had a brown Capri. We called it "the crappy". Later on he had an XR3i and that was OK, but a very boring navy blue. His first car was a red mark3 Cortina, it had not furry dice but a furry dashboard - previous owner had covered it in fake black fur!

Re: Ford Probe - 03/10/2017 05:13

JKD - that's a great advert, sounds like the late, great John Hurt! But there was another one where the voice-over kept saying "PROBE" in a low voice. It's quite an unfortunate name for a car in the light of what malevolent aliens are said to do to people!

Re: Ford Probe - 03/10/2017 05:24

Ha ha! This advert has Judy Dench doing the voice over!

Probe II advert

I can't find the one that I remember.

Does anyone think John Hurt was asked to do that advert since he was in the movie Alien?

Given the whole malevolent alien association thing mentioned above, I don't know whether that's genius advertising or a total blunder. confused
