"Shooting star"?

"Shooting star"? - 12/01/2012 18:37

Did any one else just see a massive shooting star?

It was around 18:14 falling from south to west. Unlike any other shooting star I've seen I could see what looked like flames coming out the tail and it was in the air for around 2-3 seconds. At first I thought it was a light aircraft but then the light just stopped.

Very pretty. love

It was probably Hovedan trying to get to Brighton in a hurry...

... seriously though, there are supposed to be a few spectacular cosmic shows around at the moment. Here in Kent the blasted lights from roads and motorways tend to obscure views of the heavens. Almost as bad as London box

Flippin ek - I was driving home and saw this!

At the time it looked as though something the size of a football was dropping quickly from the sky in a ball of fire, looking to come down in the field next to the road - almost like a flare coming down but traveling too quickly.

It didn't really cross my mind it could something much larger, much higher crossing the sky.

I've done a little googling and found this report from the BBC two years ago, I guess it's the same thing.

BBC report

I've also tried to find a video of a similar event for those of you who may be interested.

I wasn't far from Hereford at the time, also a friend in Lincoln said he saw the same thing.

It was much more yellow/orange than any shooting star I'd seen before and giving off quite a glow - thats why I assumed it was something small quite close by.

I saw Space Station (ISS) passing over the south east back in august, looked like a huge shooting star with a massive tail, probably the same thing or similar. Nasa satalite spotting

Typical journalism. The chances are very slim, but they cover that with the word 'could'.

It was just a large meteor, or 'fireball'. Nothing mysterious about it, although they are exciting to see.
