Breaking Bad

Breaking Bad - 23/04/2012 14:09

I love the premise behind this show, but I'm reaching a bit of a crossroads with it... (I'll hide any spoiler bits lower down)

For those that haven't heard of it, Breaking Bad involves a square, rather controlling, middle-aged high school chemistry teacher in New Mexico (I think), who is struggling to make ends meet. Financial matters are made worse when his wife announces she is expecting another child. At this point he collapses and is taken to hospital where he discovers he has terminal lung cancer.

Through a chance meeting with a ne'er-do-well former pupil, our (anti)hero Walt - convincingly played by Bryan Cranston, the Dad in Malcolm in the Middle - gets involved in using his chemical skills for nefarious purposes. Things spiral rapidly out of control from here...

For the first series, I was enthralled, watching in spellbound horror at murders, insane drug barons, ever-closer brushes with Hank the DEA agent brother-in-law.

But now I'm almost at the end of series 2 and it's just endless disaster after awful event. OK, already, I get that there are consequences to actions and once you start a chain of events, it can become uncontrollable and terrible!
What I want to know is whether there is ever any redemption or resolution or does it just continue to be Walt and Jessie getting ever-deeper mired in shit.

Walt has conclusively proven that he is a better cold, psychopathic, self-centred gangster than a chemistry teacher and Jessie is great as the not-so-bad bad boy.

Surely series 3, 4 and now 5 can't just be more of the same?

What channel is it on Jim? Sounds like my cup of tea.

Re: Breaking Bad - 23/04/2012 14:48

I'm not sure what channel it's going out on. I got series 1 for Christmas and now we're getting it on LoveFilm, so it's box-set watching for us.

It really is an excellent show - very, very dark, but addictive. A bit like crystal meth! I thoroughly recommend it.

the early stuff was brilliant.

later stuff is still good, BUT not as good as the early stuff becasue

I has stopped liking the lead character. I no longer sympathise with him and feel he is just another scum who i would like to see come to a sticky end.

I know the series always trod a fine line however I can no longer relate with him. I wont say too much as I may still be ahead of you - I have seen at least 3, maybe 4 seasons but some of his actions are simply unforgivable.

i also feel the humour which was all over season 1 is now lost

LOL I definitely dont want to risk one of your house parties wink

Re: Breaking Bad - 23/04/2012 16:36

Keep watching, it keeps getting better imo. At season 2 it's yet to come to it's peak.

I've watched right up to the end and it does come to a conclusion, but now I hear another studio are planning to continue it for another series in a slightly different form.

Re: Breaking Bad - 23/04/2012 16:51

@GrahamL: Mrs C was reading last night that a fifth season was in production. I'm inclined to keep going a bit, so your advice may be sound. I guess we'll see...

@ Big_Mike: I totally agree with your point about the disappearance of the humour bit of "black humour" and about the lead character! This is exactly why I am wondering whether to carry on.

Also, I should make it clear that it is the televisual drama that I am recommending, rather than the class A narcotic!

lol yeah yeah what ever.

so long as you dont go down this road,

Stick with the show, even at its lowest point its a good show, and some of the episodes are better than others right through.

Re: Breaking Bad - 24/04/2012 13:39

Stick with it.

I got to a point around season 2-3 where I was getting a bit fed up. But towards the end of the latest series it really picks up again. There are many nice twists and turns to come if you put the time in smile

I think the brilliance of the show is the way Walt changes. No doubt feeling bitter and angry about his illness, and the way certain things keep going wrong for a very intelligent man such as himself. He can be seen as quite a monster in some episodes but everything becomes clear and his reasons for his actions prove his heart is in the right place, lol.

But yeh, great show imo. I loved it.

Re: Breaking Bad - 24/04/2012 14:01

I talked about it with Mrs C and we agreed that we'll probably watch the rest in due course, but it's causing resentment with the kids because we're getting it one disc at a time from LoveFilm, which means we're NOT getting things they want to see (which suits me juuuuust fine!).

As I said in my first post, I absolutely love the premise of the show, but I'm a bit frustrated that - for me - the story "arc" hasn't quite lived up to the potential.

As a huge fan of The Wire, Sopranos and Deadwood, my standards are high and I suppose I'm just slightly disappointed.

Re: Breaking Bad - 24/04/2012 14:59

do you have broadband? (no i am not going to suggest something illegal wink )

looking at netflix it seems that has seasons 1-3

https://signup.netflix.com/Movie/Breaking-Bad/70143836?country=1&rdirfdc=true

and you get a month trial free of charge - infact better than that I got £15 quidco cash back when i signed up for my month trial which is better than a free trial.

(if you need a quidco account pm me and i will send you a referral and i get a 5er. not sure if you do too wink )

Re: Breaking Bad - 25/04/2012 08:23

That's a very kind offer, Mike. I'll get back to you when I have time for the quidco thing...

In fact time is the main restriction - we just don't have time to watch the whole lot in a couple of sittings, which is always how I prefer to do series like this.

I imagine that's why I have an unopened box set of that scandinavian thriller with the woolly jumpers woman. No idea what it's like, but I hope I get time to watch it one day!

Re: Breaking Bad - 25/04/2012 14:03

I finished watching the final episode last night. I've enjoyed every season and can't wait for the new one to come out.

It's strange how it's never been shown on British tv before. Perhaps they worry that it glamorises drugs or something?

Re: Breaking Bad - 23/10/2013 11:44

How late am I to the party? Hearing lots of good things about this, I have started watching it today. I've just got through the pilot episode at lunchtime. Anyone else starting this late?

Re: Breaking Bad - 23/10/2013 11:52

It seems like ages ago that I started this thread. Many of my friends have watched it from soup to nuts and loved it. We still haven't taken on any more of it, but it has become a definite "best ever TV series" candidate among those who care about such things.

I still feel the same about it - superb idea for a show, fantastic acting and characters and (in series 1) a lot of black humour to go with the nastiness. Funnily enough my stepdaughter was saying she would be happy to watch some more of it, so perhaps we might get another disk or 2 in due course...

I'd say go for it, but be prepared for a whole lot of grim unpleasantness for every nugget of happy redemption!

Re: Breaking Bad - 23/10/2013 11:58

Like you, Jim, we watched a small amount of this show (I think we may have finished season 2) and then for some reason never returned to it.

I think some other series came on and we were more interested in that.

Friends absolutely race about it and the hype around the final season was almost unbearable amongst our peer group.

Perhaps we'll give it another go over the festive period.

It's just madness to start this late, as a seasoned fan I am going to head down the A1 so I can spit in your face for *daring* to start watching this late! Being locked in prison for ever is no better than people like you deserve!!!

The wife and I have been ardent Breaking Bad fans since Saturday night, and have watched all 5 of the episodes on the first 2 DVDs of season 1 and, as such, we're sickened by your newbie attitude.

Re: Breaking Bad - 23/10/2013 12:03

The main reason for me searching out something to watch on the old gogglebox is that MrsWishy is doing a degree this year leaving me in control of the living room once the little ones are off to bed. I don't really get excited about much on TV so a normal evening would have me on the sofa searching t'internet for cars I can't afford or computer parts. Now that I have full control of the remote I don't see much I'm fussed about to watch.

Probably the last series I would really make a point of watching was The League of Gentleman if that illustrates how little I'm normally bothered about TV. I have watched and enjoyed stuff like Luther and Sherlock Holmes of late but they aren't things that I'd seek out if that make sense.

I was impressed by the pilot, bring on the grim unpleasantness bits, redemption is overrated!

Re: Breaking Bad - 23/10/2013 12:07

Hey, you think I'm bad? Even the first person to mention it on here (as far as I can see from the search engine) was 4 years late!
Posted By: Jim_Clennell

Re: Breaking Bad - 23/10/2013 12:15

I think you'll find 4 years is fashionably late...

If you have a reasonable amount of time to invest in some TV watching, you really, absolutely can't beat The Wire. In my opinion.

New (last) series of Misfits starts on C4 tonight...

Re: Breaking Bad - 23/10/2013 12:22

As it happens, this year I have about another 9 months that I can indulge myself. After that I'll be upping my hours at work back to normal so will need to be working a lot more from home and the main TV watcher in this household will be claiming her seat back on the sofa. The two evenings a week that I currently work still gives me a significant amount of time to sit on my backside and watch TV (or just buy GTA V).

What does 5 years late class as?

Saul Goodman is 'apparently' getting his own series.

Breaking bad was the best show I've seen besides The Wire The Sopranos. I feel like smoking Meth just to try to emulate the feelings that show gave!

Re: Breaking Bad - 25/11/2013 23:07

We've just started again with Breaking Bad. Couldn't remember where we'd got up to the first time around so we started back at the beginning.

We're really enjoying it; just coming up to the end of season 2.

Re: Breaking Bad - 26/11/2013 09:01

Just watched the end of Series 4. Didn't quite expect that.

The only (minor) irritation of the whole series has been the ever-changing face of the actress who plays Skyler.
Step away from the knife woman grr

Just working my way through series 4 at the moment.

I'm very impressed with the way the writers can, say, turn an entire episode about swatting a fly into nearly unbearable tension.
