Snow 2012/13

Snow 2012/13 - 27/10/2012 17:35

Well it seems it's started already:

First signs of snow

And the media are already going into panic stations :

Quote:
There were falls of up to an inch (2.5cm) of snow in some areas of north-east England

(bolding copied direct from website) rolleyes

Just waiting for the stories now of stuck handbrakes, blizzard-like conditions as perhaps a whole 1.5 inches of snow falls shocked laugh

And lest we not forget the tale of the little Punto who could, going where 4x4's dared not tread to rescue a small child smile

Simon, our postman, has the day off today. Yesterday he said he was off to the coast today to go windsurfing if the roads were clear.

Somehow I doubt if he has made it.

Went out in my friends mx last, let's just say it was actually quite funny

I haven't touched my coop. It's currently sat under about 3-4 inches of the white stuff.Purely because I'm using the works van due to having been working away.I can't believe how, even in these conditions, how badly people still drive.Tailgating, driving too moving out into the 3rd lane while it's covered in 3 inches of snow due to not being used. The amount of crash damaged vehicles abandoned on the side of the m4 is ridiculous!

Re: Snow 2012/13 - 19/01/2013 12:42

2 hours to get from Coventry to the sleepy town of Alcester.
I made it to Stratfoed with no problem, but then the roads were gridlocked. So I decided to go the back lanes crazy .

As I turned off the main road, all I saw was fresh virgin snow, thinking I may have made the wrong decision I noticed a Clio and a Focus were following me.

Now the road we were on is 4 miles long and no side roads off it. I was having fun trying to work out were the road was but then noticed that the Focus was no longer there. 2 miles later just at the brow of a hill I noticed that the Clio had stopped half way up.

I but was a bit worried when I exhaust was catching in the drifts but luckily the snow was still soft.

love I love my Coupe love

Re: Snow 2012/13 - 21/01/2013 00:14

Been snowing on here since Thursday, mainly light snow, with the odd heavy shower.

All main roads were clear, but Friday night, heavier snow came down and it was freezing too, making for very slippery conditions.

Has snowed lightly since, until around 10am this morning and has been coming down heavier and steadily since.

The snow was sticking to uncleared surfaces, but didn't start sticking to cleared surfaces until around 3pm.

We had about 3 inches here up until today, but looks like we've got a total of around 4 - 5 now, looking at the untouched surfaces.

Still snowing too.

No snow here at all. We had a very small flurry in November but that's been about it. I'm still on holiday, no doubt we will eventually see the white stuff, but for now not a flake.... snowman

I've just cleaned out the wood burner & put the ashes outside. I'm still in my dressing gown & bare feet. (not a pretty sight I know) Not that cold here. In the sticks where I live can be quite sheltered.

17cm here in Rugby. Swept it off the beemer and drove 23miles to Warwick. Had some 'interesting' moments laugh

Sat in the office on my own for an hour and have now driven back home. The main roads have a layer of ice under the slush and are lethal in places.

Take care anyone venturing out today.

All it brings out around here, are the kids who aren't in school that decide to throw snowballs containing stones, at cars and trains, etc.

Parents around here can't be bothered spending their time with their kids and kick them out onto the streets. Today will be no different.

I am hugely regretting swapping my MTB tyres for road "slicks" last autumn. I've had a couple of big offs whilst people on crappy bikes with knobbly tyres have sailed by quite happily!
Thought I'd knackered my knee in one fall last Friday, but it seemed ok this morning.
Yesterday it was all about happy, rosy-cheeked kids, today was all angry motorists and scared cyclists...!

And we've only had a meagre 3-4 inches

Re: Snow 2012/13 - 21/01/2013 12:47

If they actually said to people 'get out there and drive' instead of 'ooh, snowflakes, you're doooooooooooooomed' then perhaps we wouldn't have such issues...

And requiring - or at least encouraging - snow tyres would not be a bad thing... I discovered this weekend that qwikfit will store tyres for sixty quid a set; that's not even the cost of getting a dent knocked out.

I meant swapped as in the old tyres died and I threw them away and bought new road tyres. Now that I have a road bike too, I suppose I should just keep knobblies on the MTB, but it's easy to be wise after the event...

Re: Snow 2012/13 - 21/01/2013 14:26

It's quite deep here in certain parts of stoke on Trent especially where I live, I'd say around 8inches, but I've not had any major problems in my 20v vis, no frozen handbrake, no frozen petrol cap, locks only froze twice but easily fixed with some warm water, driving wise not one problem on the ice and snow, even with my old tyres, I've even driven past new cars stuck reversing and just pulling out of the same streets as myself!

I am very happy with my coupe she's done me proud so far smile

Re: Snow 2012/13 - 21/01/2013 14:57

Just a note to say the Audi has been a great car to drive around in the snow. The thing kicks out so much heat it melts everything around it, and the quattro doesn't mind the odd snowcovered road. ESP isn't too aggressive either if your driving normally.

I've cleared the snow off my car 3 times now and the drive took ages to clear. Hasn't snowed here since last night though and its melting. Main roads are now clear but probably re-freeze again tonight.

I am totally, utterly, fully and continuously fed up of this weather - I hate the snow, I hate ice and hate anything less than 20 degrees temps.

With the supposed thaw this coming weekend and the band of rain accompanying it, i fully expect yet another automated phone call late at night from the environment agency telling me to move my stuff upstairs as i'm about to be flooded.

If you have to travel there is no contest Sam, snow and the freezing cold are a nightmare, rain is just a nuisance and depressive unless it leads to flooding that is.

Ah the weather, got to love it.

Another thing we don't have here at the moment is wind. The chill factor that the wind causes at this time of year can be quite exhausting if you're out & about for any length of time.

Not exactly tee shirt weather here but not a million miles away..... cool

Yep, the wind and the cold is sore on the chubby cheeks.

We are having it pretty easy at this point compared with the guys down south, last couple of winters I've had a bucket of grit in the van.

Long may it continue.

As I saw a black one briefly last week...Also followed a yellow 16v p reg heading up towards Birdshills golf centre too..Didn't post in the spotting section as unsure which area to post in? Lol coat

I live and usually work in Marlow but the coupe only comes out at weekends so not me on the A404. My girlfriend works near birds hill and sees the broomy every day, no idea if they're on here or not.
Back on topic, snow has all but gone from Marlow frown

Re: Snow 2012/13 - 26/01/2013 02:19

Rather a lot of snow dumped here tonight lol laugh

I made the decision to walk to work, but was regretting it when I saw how clear the roads were on the way in.

The snow got worse though and I was very glad the Coupe was sitting safely at home, while I struggled to walk home laugh

Takes 40 minutes to walk to work, which I expected, but then took me nearly an hour to walk home.

Should burn some calories off though and compensate for my well deserved beers when I got home laugh

We've had a good 6-8 inches, had too wake the kids up too come do some snow shovelling so I could get on the drive.

Re: Snow 2012/13 - 22/03/2013 22:29

Sick of it now frown

Got about a foot of it here at the moment and it's still snowing heavily.

I've walked nearly 10 miles to get to both my jobs and back today.
Got the same to do tomorrow and possibly Sunday too.

My feet are killing me and I'm knackered lol.

On the plus side, I can have a few beers, as I won't be driving in the morning and I've got a nice bar of Cadbury's chocolate to eat after my bath, just to make sure I don't dip below my daily calorie allowance wink laugh

Re: Snow 2012/13 - 22/03/2013 23:34

Lol, no, afraid not laugh

While I'm here, can I just mention a big thanks to the inventor of the snow shovel love

For years, I've always used just a hard bristled broom, which is usually ok for clearing most snow, as long as people haven't trampled all over it.

I cleared my path with it this morning, with the intention of clearing the drive and Coupe when home from work.

The broom finally gave up on me and decided to snap rolleyes

On the walk home, I needed to go to the cash machine and thought I'd pop to the local hardware store and get a new broom to carry home with me laugh

I saw they had snow shovels and decided to buy one of those instead.

Walked even faster to get home, as I was so excited and couldn't wait to try it out laugh

It's great, a godsend, I don't know why I've gone all these years without one!

Out goes the broom, in with the snow shovel cool laugh

Along with dodging cars with decent tyres who can venture into the snow and jumping on and off pavements, today is up there with the greatest of days laugh

By far the best thing for removing fresh snow is a floor squeegee.

A foot of snow with a floor squeegee? I'm with Theresa - you can remove HUGE volumes of snow with a snow shovel - I have 2 wink

Honestly. If it's fresh snow and a good surface it just glides. I cleared works yard with one yesterday with minimal effort. 40ft lines, one after another.

My dad use to use a 4ft by 6ft board to clear the road to the driveway. Back in "the day".

An inch in Hemel... nothing worth speaking of but no doubt there will be a few 4x4s in the ditches.

Snow tyres still on...

Re: Snow 2012/13 - 23/03/2013 12:03

We've had fine powder falling all morning - more like frozen thin mist than snow. The snow from the beginning of the week hasn't gone either - I'm really bored of winter now.

Re: Snow 2012/13 - 23/03/2013 12:35

We've finally had enough snow to get my 4WD Mazda 6 MPS stuck. I did drive it into fresh unbroken snow on purpose which was well above the sills laugh A quick foot cleared either side and we were off again.

The garden has about a foot in it, more where it's drifted. Couldn't open the conservatory door laugh

I have one very interested two year old love

Anita is flying back from Brazil today and hopes to build a snowman. I trust it will be better than her last attempt...

A good foot here on top of the peninies, I have a drift of over 4 feet in my garden and have spent nearly 2 hours clearing behind the coup. It started snowing Thursday night and hasn't stopped yet!
