Your top 10 albums of all time - 11/02/2013 20:38

'Help with an argument' has shown what a diverse taste in music we have on the forum, watching 'When albums ruled the world' the other night got me thinking, so……time to share your top 10 albums of all time, here's mine (which will probably be the best) laugh

Prodigy - Fat of the Land

Re: Your top 10 albums of all time - 11/02/2013 21:22

I had to make such a list of my favourites recently albeit I had to pick 11. If I have time I'll think about which one to knock off to make it 10. Might take a while as it took ages to make this list from my initial short-list which was about 50.

In no particular order

Sonic Youth - Sister
The Fall - This Nation's Saving Grace
Primal Scream - Screamadelica
Mudhoney - SuperFuzzBiMuff
New Order - Power, Corruption and Lies
The Cure - Disintegration
The Smiths - Hatful of Hollow (OK, another not a proper album but still....)
Tricky - Maxinquaye
The White Stripes - De Stijl
The Sisters of Mercy - First and Last and Always
The The - Soul Mining

The titles had to be clean otherwise Big Black's Songs about ***king would have been there instead of Mudhoney. Not a complete representation of my tastes as no Hip hop, reggae or hippy stuff made it into the final list.

Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick

Blimey; that was tough. Should give you an idea of my taste and age though wink

An eclectic mixture, but good...! I originally typed twelve, but deleted Nirvana "in Vitro" and AC/DC "Back in Black". I would be censored useless on Desert Island Discs (although the book would be Lord of the Rings crazy). The luxury would be my iPod with all of the above thumb but I'd forget my headphones.......

The first two *nearly* made it into my list, and I complete forgot about the 3rd one, but it would also have nearly made it.

Re: Your top 10 albums of all time - 12/02/2013 14:29

For me Jagged Little Pill is always first on my list. An album that I have played so much I/we (my wife loves it too) are on our 3rd copy of the CD.

I also almost forgot Bat out of Hell and then suddenly remembered it (the first album I ever bought) and I couldn't ignore it laugh

Meat loaf - Bat out of hell

Pink floyd - The wall

And that from a bloke who once played 'Born to be Wiiiiiiiiild' at an AGM!

Never understood this fad for 'best ten' lists... it changes depending on mood, surely? One knows what one actively dislikes (e.g. any manufactured band, any rap, house, ambient or similar crap, for example) but as to what is listened to more than any other? The fact of listening leads to overload...

But then, I listen to albums, in the order the artist wanted them. What do I know?

Re: Your top 10 albums of all time - 12/02/2013 20:14

New Order - Substance
Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am
Reverend and the Makers - The State of Things
Oasis - Definitely Maybe
New Order - Republic
ZZ Top - Eliminator
Fleetwood Mac - Tango in the Night
Nirvana - Nevermind
ELO - Out of the Blue
Electronic - Electronic

Half Man Half Biscuit and Ratt just failed to make the cut - mixed bag or what?

The Jam - Setting Sons
The Vapors - New Clear Days
The Clash - The Clash
Cowboy Junkies - Caution Horses
Tom Petty - Full Moon Fever
Nirvana - Nevermind
The Smiths - Meat is Murder
Green Day - (collection of the earlier stuff)
REM - Document
The Cure - can't decide

Ha, more that nearly made it into my list.

Sadly enough also in the nearly list was Slippery when Wet by Bon Jovi, which was the soundtrack to every teenage party I went to.

For Beautiful South I was tempted to include Welcome to the Beautiful South; it's such a good album - Song for whoever, I'll sail this ship alone, Woman in the wall, etc. Now I'm feeling guilty that I edged it out smile

Travelling Wilburys - Vol 1

But that's just today...

Re: Your top 10 albums of all time - 13/02/2013 10:34

Without going off topic too far - for me the Beatles were hugely influential, but they handed the torch onto others.

Anyway:

The Jam - Setting Sons
Arctic Monkeys - Whatever...
Gang of Four - Entertainment
David Bowie - Hunky Dory
Talking Heads - The Name of this Band... (Compilation cheat)
I Am Kloot - I Am Kloot (surprise!)
Elbow - Leaders of the Free World
Radiohead - The Bends
Elvis Costello - Get Happy!
Grant Lee Buffalo - Fuzzy

And in 11th place, a thousand others, including:
Blur 13
Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
Mark Curry - It's Only Time
Radiohead - OK Computer
U2 - Boy (OK, it sounded good then)
Beautiful South - Welcome to...
Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger
Elvis Costello - Imperial Bedroom
The The - Soul Mining
Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells (and I'd better stop there)
Posted By: bockers

Re: Your top 10 albums of all time - 13/02/2013 11:04

Wow Tubular Bells, I prefer Crises but there are parts of Tubular Bells, especially side two that are just superb. I am probably alone in liking Tubular Bells 2 as well, although version 3 was cack.

This thread in the main is deeply routed in the 80s laugh

Re: Your top 10 albums of all time - 13/02/2013 12:58

I was trying to avoid this, but....

In no particular order

Pink Floyd - Meddle (hard to choose as I am a huge fan of most of the work)
I Am Kloot - Sky at Night (or possibly the BBC on sessions)
Nick Cave - Abatoir Blues
Mark Knopfler - Get Lucky
Fleetwood Mac - The Pious Bird of Good Omen
Faithless - Sunday 8pm
Joe Bonamassa and Beth Hart - Don't Explain
John Martyn - Solid Air
Neil Young - Le Noise
Richard Hawley - standing at skies edge

Now that was difficult, and probably represents artists I return to regularly more than the specific albums as such. As said above it varies massively, I have a large selection of music covering most genres so its difficult to choose.

Radiohead: The bends
Smashing Pumpkins: Siamese dream
Beck: Odelay
Faith No More: Angel dust
Fleetwood Mac: Rumours
Nirvana: Nevermind
Blur: Blur
Rage Against The Machine: RATM
Weezer: Weezer

And some nearlies....
Lisa Hannigan: Sea Sew
Reef: Glow
Stone Temple Pilots: Purple
Belle & Sebastien: Dear Catastrophe Waitress
Cold War Kids: Robbers & cowards
Royksopp: Melody AM
Foo Fighters: The colour and the shape
Supergrass: I should CoCo
And War of the Worlds!

Re: Your top 10 albums of all time - 14/02/2013 00:40

I can't really come up with a top ten, as I like a lot of songs, from a wide variety of albums and as above, depends on the mood at the time smile

Albums I tend to listen to all the way through are Club Classics, Dance or Power Ballad type albums.

When not listening to the above I now tend to listen to greatest hits albums:

Def leppard
Bon Jovi
Coldplay
Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Limp Bizkit
Scooter
Dire Straits
Guns N Roses
Eminem
Queen

Like Nobby, I also enjoy listening to War of the Worlds cool

Re: Your top 10 albums of all time - 14/02/2013 11:38

I had problems narrowing it down to just ten choices from my rather eclectic collection, but here goes;

Mortiis - the Smell of Rain
David Bowie - (the rise and fall of) Ziggy Stardust (and the spiders from Mars)
The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die
Sepultura - Roots
Skunk Anansie - Post Orgasmic Chill
Placebo - Without You I'm Nothing
One Minute Silence - Available In All Colours
Cradle of Filth - Damnation and a Day
Marilyn Manson - Holywood
Muse - Origin Of Symmetry

Back in 1978 my parents were doing the Christmas present run and we took in a visit to my cousin who had just bought his first house. When we got there he could see I was a little bored so he sat me down by his huge music centre, plugged in this huge set of headphones, plonked them on my head and said "listen to this Robert".... I was a 14 year old lad and I got totally lost in the music and album artwork. This album was instrumental in opening my eyes to different styles of music. This led to me going through and listening to my parents album collection and finding that I could appreciate quite a lot of "Their" music! I came to realise that my Mum & Dad actually had quite a cool collection, once I got past the Jim Reeves & Slim Whitman stuff.

As for my top ten..... Upon reviewing it today I question why there is so much missing. I clearly leaned towards Rock in my top ten but this means I have missed off so much other stuff. Today I am questioning why I have not selected any Punk or Ska. I must also confess that I like Pop music too and after listening today to Dusty in Memphis I wonder if she could also make my top ten?

Dio, I have to confess that I loved the little guy. I was a massive early Rainbow fan and was gutted when he left to join black Sabath. That said his influence meant that, for me, Heaven & Hell was their best ever album!

In 2005 we noticed that Dio were doing a "Back to their roots" tour playing the "Holy Diver" tour at small venues as well as larger ones. We got too see them at the tiny Norwich UEA venue and as a bonus got to meet and chat with him outside before the gig started. What a really nice guy he was. He spent quite some time chatting with the small group of us, asking loads of questions and being totally open. I got to meet a childhood hero and was not at all dissapointed. We were due to see him again in 2010 on the Heaven & Hell tour but Ronnie never made it cry

As we blokes get older we do seem to become a tad more sensetive (Well I know I have). When I received the Email from Ronnie's website (Wife) I did indeed have tears in my eyes reading it. I finally understood why my wife had been so upset when Freddie died.
