Anybody got a number for there cretins that actually gets you through to someone?

I've just spent 15 minutes of going through menus and listening to a robot only to be told that they're very busy right now and I should probably call back later. No option to hold, just "sorry we couldn't help at this time" and then cut off.

I know the feeling all too well frown

I know this suggestion will sound even more ridiculous but if you are a regular visitor of your own town/city centre then drop by at your local HMRC office. When I did this I was even more frustrated when I was given an ID ticket with a desk and telephone but I got through to someone immediately who knew exactly what they were talking about without holding for an answer and no transferring to another dept.

Like I say, I know it sounds like messing about but I was in & out the office in less than 3 minutes for something I had just spent nearly an hour on trying to arrange.

I've just registered myself for the government gateway (for accessing my personal information and making amendments, doing reports online etc). Only adding this info for people who need to contact them more often. I haven't started using it so cant say if its any good yet.

You may be on to something there idea

As an accountant, we have an agent line which is answered instantly for many areas of tax. For other we have to wait like everyone else, then you get through to a thick person and have to end the call and redial hoping for someone with slightly more brain cells.

I reckon if you pick one of the names published in the news today and phone in saying 'hello I am ******** the notorious tax evader' you'll probably get through quite quickly.

Cheers guys. Going into my local office will be difficult due their opening hours and my working hours.

I'll just keep trying I suppose.

The letter they sent me yesterday says they expect me to earn over £120k this tax year.

Unfortunately they're way off the mark.
