My motoring contribution to Global Warming

My motoring contribution to Global Warming - 04/03/2014 15:31

Just passed my annual MOT on Saturday in my relatively efficient Peugeot 308 1.6Hdi Sport 110.

I get about 52mpgs combined.

In the 20,083 miles I've driven in the last 12 months, according to the official Peugeot spec sheet, I have been responsible for the car's releasing 4.332 tonnes of C02 into the atmosphere!! That's a lot of C02.

This got me intrigued. It was a quiet afternoon in work yesterday and so I got out the back of an envelope, a pen, calculator and the various spec sheets from www.wisebuyers.co.uk

The results:
Nine cars over 12 years,
7 petrol,
2 diesel,
C02 of each car checked
202,000 miles clocked.

C02 production = 57 Tonnes

I should be ashamed but it’s quite impressive at the same time.

And that's according to the manufacturers' figures...

That's true Jim.

Peugeot stats said the 308 would do 60mpg rolleyes

Imagine what 236,000 mile Coupe with no Cat on would produce ! laugh

Depends more the emissions of the tow-truck collecting it, I'd imagine smile

Most of my cars aren't even on there. Where else can I look? Just had a go with estimates.

I've had
- MG Metro (1986): 10,000 miles @ ~ 200g/km = 3.2t
- Renault Clio 16v (1991): 15,000 miles @ ~ 220g/km = 5.3t
- Fiat Coupe (1997): 90,000 miles @ 240g/km = 34.7t
- Toyota MR2 (1992): 20,000 miles @ 230 g/km = 7.3t
- Audi RS6 (2003): 12,000 miles @ 350g/km = 6.75t

57.25 Tons
Yikes!

May be wrong but don't think the cat impacts CO2 output confused

HC isn't it?

The cat *increases* CO2 output since it requires the mix to be richer than it might otherwise be, which reduces efficiency at cruise and idle slightly. However, running it lean massively increases the various oxides of nitrogen, which the cat is there to eat, along with any left over hydrocarbons.

But removing the cat from a coupe won't change the CO2 output since the electronics assume it's there.
