Worst film ever?

Worst film ever? - 12/01/2016 18:20

I'm putting Sex and the City 2 up there. I had the misfortune to be in the same room as a TV this was playing on this week and just felt that I needed to get this off my chest.

Previously I would have had Titanic at the top of my list but this has surpassed it on every single measure that I can possibly dream of. I haven't seen 50 shades of grey.

There, it's all over, breathe out.....

Re: Worst film ever? - 12/01/2016 20:00

'Raptor'...terrible and with a nearly unfathomable storyline. Only some years later did I discover that it's two films (poorly) stitched together. Cue horrendous continuity errors and scenes that make little sense.

Actually, on the basis that I watched to the end it's still better than Mamma Mia...

Re: Worst film ever? - 12/01/2016 20:05

Eraserhead.

50 Shades of Grey I turned off (and deleted the file!) after 15 mins due to the laughable dialogue and amatuer acting. But what I saw of it was still better than Eraserhead. smile

Re: Worst film ever? - 12/01/2016 22:04

To be honest I'm probably being a bit unfair on Titanic. I watched it on a long haul flight once where I was desperate to get some sleep as I was straight into a full days work on arrival. I never sleep well on long flights so I thought Titanic would be the ideal choice to bore me to sleep.

How wrong I was, trying to get to sleep reminded me of

Blast from the past... Silver Dream Racer, with David Essex - As a biker many years ago, I and a few mates though a film about bike racing would be an entertaining way to spend a couple of hours and a few quid

Should have realised when we were the only four people in the cinema - we stuck it out for half an hour and then went to the pub - utterly dire storyline and even worse acting - needs to be preserved for ever as an example of why non-actors shouldn't act....

David Lynch would be on the list of my favourite directors although the likes of Wild at Heart would be the reasons for that. I just remember Eraserhead as odd and never revisited it a second time.

Re: Worst film ever? - 12/01/2016 22:33

The worst film in the world is without a doubt Plan 9 From Outer Space, but it's so bad it's almost good. Attack of the Killer Tomatoes gives it a good run for its money, mind...

Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Worst film ever? - 13/01/2016 07:03

I've never seen a really bad movie. Because they always get turned off before the end and usually this is in conjunction with some swearing at the TV.

I've seen some B movies till the end, but in this case I knew they would be crap and stuck it out. Amazingly, they were so bad they came good! smile

A recent one springs to mind called Deathgasm - About some guys selling their soul to the devil to become rock gods. So bad it was good.

Aliens 3 is up there. Mr Turner was dire too and a real disappointment given the producer and cast. The latest Superman, and any Marvel production made beyond 2012. The last Star Trek was dire too, time travel and meeting yourself never works and ruins the rest of the fanchise. Lair of the White Worm may get AndrewR out of retirement smile

I had to google that.

But Johnny Vegas doing soft porn? shocked
Posted By: bockers

Re: Worst film ever? - 13/01/2016 15:56

Soft porn it is not, and it's not a lot of other things too. Adrian Chiles is in it for starters!
Posted By: PeteP

Re: Worst film ever? - 13/01/2016 19:21

Yes, I saw Adrian Chiles was in it too.

This is one of the comments I read: "One of the few positive reviews for Sex Lives of the Potato Men came from Mark Adams in the Sunday Mirror, who stated "Vegas and Crook are a sleazy dream-team and brilliantly cast as the soft-core spud men... After several pints and a curry it could be the lads’ film of the year."

Ok so, arguably, soft core and soft porn are not totally synonymous, but pretty close.

Perhaps Mark Adams exaggerated for his Sunday Mirror readers.

But in this case, boy did they make an exception. Billed by no less a film guru than Mark Kermode as a potential Best Picture Oscar winner (I kid you not), I found it to be the most trite, stereotype-reinforcing load of codswallop I've seen since... Hugo.

Hmmm .. having been badly misled by the title of another thread (Crap Jokes), which actually started to include some rather good ones, I need to put out a reality check on this one.

If I say ....

"Captain Corelli's mandolin"

is anyone still there??
Posted By: Wishy

Re: Worst film ever? - 14/01/2016 11:50

Better not show this thread to Mrs Wishy, they'll be sparks flying as she loves that film! To be fair it's probably more due to liking Kefalonia having been there and also having read the book.

Looks like I dodged a bullet only to be smacked in the face with a shovel during last summer as we only only just missed out on going to see Inside Out. We went to see Pixels instead which was woeful (although probably not bad enough to be on this list). I couldn't believe how someone had managed to make a film revolving around around retro video games which I love so uninvolving......
On second thoughts, Adam Sandler is in it, no further explanation necessary.

I'm going to add Adam Sandler's entire filmography to this list.

I feel all warm and fuzzy inside now. It has always astounded me how someone with so little talent in their chosen field can make such a good career out of it.

Paradoxically, I'd also class Nicholas Cage and Keanu Reeves as being pretty mediocre actors but they've both been in great films. Mr. Sandler doesn't even have that to redeem himself.

Jason Statham.

Although, I must say I gained a little respect for him after hearing him interviewed a little while back.

He said something along the lines of, "look, my films are never going to win an Oscar. But they keep paying me [very well] to be this one dimensional action hero. Why would I say no?"
Posted By: Jim_Clennell

Re: Worst film ever? - 14/01/2016 13:39

Jason Statham gave his defining performance in Lock, Stock. But for his (and Jude Law's) redemption, I recommend Spy.
Posted By: Wishy

Re: Worst film ever? - 14/01/2016 13:53

I might have to look Spy up then. I have to say that a film with those two AND Miranda Hart (who I believe to be as funny as Adam Sandler is talented) would not normally get to the "lets watch this for 5 minutes because there's nothing else on" stage in this house.

This thread is actually giving me ideas of stuff to watch!

Exactly.

Proper budget with Nic Cage, Left Behind is the worst. Its not just badly made with terrible performances - through the whole film Cage looks like he has a massive dental bill looming - but the core message, the rapture, is the biggest stinker in a big stinky barrel of stink.

Re: Worst film ever? - 29/01/2016 14:30

Cage is just dreadful. On the list with Tom Hanks, Robin Williams, Keanu Reeves and Jim Carey.... awful, absolutely awful.

Once in a while they appear is a watchable film, but throw enough scripts in the mix, once or twice they'll accidentally stumble into something.

And Zombeavers is on my watch list for the weekend.

On a related not, Megapython vs Gateroid is worth it just for the bit where Tiffany and Debbie Gibson share the lines:

Have actually seen it twice. First time on VHS around 1990 back when I was heavily into tape trading of underground/horror stuff, thought it was the most over-rated trash I'd ever seen and that was really saying something considering some of the weird no budget stuff from back then. Watched it again about 5 years ago from an HD version just in case I was being unfair but had exactly the same opinion second time around. rolleyes

The only David Lynch movie I actually liked enough to own a copy of is The Straight Story. For beautiful/weirdness I always preferred stuff like The Reflecting Skin, to me that's the kinda movie David Lynch wishes he could make. smile
Posted By: Jim_Clennell

Re: Worst film ever? - 29/01/2016 17:43

That's interesting, Graham, I really liked Eraserhead when it came out and Wild at Heart, Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks, too. But Mulholland Drive and Lost Highway were very disappointing. I liked the Straight Story, but I'm not as big a fan as you!

I guess living in France may have played a role in liking his stuff: he is revered as a god of cinema there.

Re: Worst film ever? - 29/01/2016 17:51

Check out The Reflecting Skin , you'll likely appreciate that if you're a fan of Lynch. It's been a favourite of mine for a long time but has just been released in the UK for the first time, on DVD and Blu-ray. Before that I had the original Canadian VHS and then a Japanese DVD, it was always a tricky one to see until very recently.

I've not seen it but I wonder if the capacity to enjoy the film depends on whether you remember watching and enjoying the original TV series?

I'm old enough to have seen the wonderful TV series. Believe me, the film is absolutely rubbish.

I was forced to watch the fast and the furious 7 by my youngest.

Words fail me on how truly terrible this was rolleyes

My only consolation was knowing that I have not had to suffer through any of the previous 6 (I'm assuming that they were all similarly crap)

Con Air is on telly right now.

"Why didn't you just put the bunny back in the box?"

Can't believe Cage didn't at least get a nomination for that role.

Con Air is worth watching just to see John Malkovich and Steve Buscemi smile

And............... It did receive 2 Oscar Nominations! (Obviously not for Cage's acting).

Tomorrow never dies? (ITV4 now)
3 men and a little lady (officially the worst film ever) would be a welcome alternative to this tedious POS.
