Getting rid of paraffin? - 28/02/2016 00:32
I've been the 'lucky' recipient of several litres of paraffin which I'm trying to get shot of.
I've tried the council waste sites, but they all won't touch it (it's flammable you know....(that was seriously their comment!!)).
Short of driving out into the country and creating a large Molotov cocktail I'm struggling for options. Given this option is neither environmentally sound, or (probably) legal, does anyone know of a better option?
Thanks all
Simon

Assuming it's clean and you drive a diesel, pour it in the tank.

Can you add this to heating oil? Shame just to get rid.

Thanks Neil. Is there anyway to see a list of the sites that will accept it? I'd found this website, but when I put in my postcode it links to the South Northants Council website.... But they only talk about asbestos under hazardous waste - in principal I think what I've got is less bad!

On the other two suggestions - I'm on gas central heating and haven't got an oil burner under bonnet so valid suggestions but not ones I can use!
Any other thoughts?

I just thought you may know someone with oil heating.

I know a helicopter engineer who runs both his diesel car and oil central heating on the the (paraffin) fuel drained off aircraft after each trip.

Depending on how many litres, you could ask local businesses, such as garages, plastics comapnies or painters/decorators if they'll ditch it for you along with their own waste chemicals.

you could always get a couple of cheap paraffin lamps for the garden. There's incredibly cheap and look pretty good too. BBQ time and all that.
You might be shot of it by 2026.

Stick a free add, as collection only, on gumtree or freecycle.
Either that or:

Put it on Gumtree and it'll be gone in an hour...

Gumtree's a very good shout actually - hadn't thought of that! So fixated on the fact I didn't want it that I forgot some people may!
Thanks all! I'm off to Gumtree to see who wants some free flammable liquid!

I would have happily bought it from you as its excellent for cleaning motorbike chains and Ive always got a 4 or 5 litre container in the garage. Any bikers?
Can also be used on any other heavily greased area including cars without damaging paintwork.
Why not use it to light you garden wood or log burner...................
