More forum power - Places to eat near Holborn - 23/05/2018 12:25

MrsWishy and I are attending a wedding in London in July and I was after recommendations of anywhere decent to eat in the Holborn area. We get there mid afternoon on Friday so have some time to ourselves on the night before the main event. It's so long so I've even visited London that I don't a clue. We're staying at the Premier Inn (yes I know how to live it up!) so somewhere within walking distance would be great although we have plenty of time to tube it somewhere if needs be.

Any suggestions welcome but us being uncultured and poor Northerners it doesn't need Michelin stars and the associated price tags. Saying that though, I don't mind "a bit fancy" as it's a special occasion. we're also thinking of going for drink in the bar of the Shard afterwords so that neck of the woods would be OK for recommendations too.

Not sure on your budget/tastes (veggie etc)

But cheap easy and a bit different- why not try my Old Dutch-close to the tube:

More showy- and bit more expensive 28-50 towards the edge of Holborn:

But loads to eat close by for all pockets - many Chinese and BBQ inspired places-to fill up for good value.

Pub wise if you want to walk a bit-you have the Ship Tavern. Or the v historic Ye Olde Mitre.

BUT - close and if your taking a young lady- enjoy the sheer opulence of the might Princes Louise - you will be drinking American in there- sam adams etc- but well worth it!

Enjoy Holborn for me- always a nice place.

Thanks I'll have a look with the young lady in question later on. Neither of us are veggie and our usual restaurants of choice round here when we can escape the ankle biters are Indian, Chinese, tapas or the occasional fancy gastro pub type thingy.

2850 that you've mentioned would be within budget.

Could always head to China Town and have your choice of Chinese places?

Either a short boat from London Bridge to Westminster and a shortish Walk, or overground train from London Bridge to Charing Cross and a shorter walk...

Not sure what you would think of the menu's but look up Sea Containers on the South Bank (near blackfriars) https://www.seacontainersrestaurant.com/ or The Sky Garden restaurant, https://skygarden.london/sky-garden both have great views. Even the gerkin building, http://searcysatthegherkin.co.uk/restaurant/ they will be slightly off the route to the Shard. Or simply walk along the south bank from the Millennium Bridge towards the Shard, a proper famous london pub is along there. The Anchor https://www.greeneking-pubs.co.uk/pubs/greater-london/anchor-bankside/ . as well as MANY other places to eat all long the Thames. If you are not in a rush, walk it, it's worth it smile

You've got the whole of Covent Garden within 5 mins walk so I'd be tempted to just have a wander around and see what takes your fancy at the time. You'll be spoilt for choice.

Or if you want to make it more memorable then maybe something out of your comfortzone and a bit more unusual - Peruvian

Some good food for thought ( rolleyes ) there thanks.

No options are off the table but current thoughts are to go cheap and cheerful as we'll be spending a small fortune otherwise over the weekend. This is of course subject to substantial change in direction at whim over the next couple of months before the main event.

Initial plan is looking like go to Shard mid afternoon and come back via Ye Olde Mitre then walk to Princess Louise/My Old Dutch/somewhere in Covent Garden for food/a few cheeky halves. The main bit of thinking behind this is that we'll be able to have a reccy of the wedding venue en-route and not be too far away from the hotel as we may also meet up with the groom on the night to deliver the last rites say hello.
