wifi extender any reccomendations - 28/08/2018 15:27

Hi, I have just moved house and am starting to get all set up etc.
Currently having issues getting wifi to the rear of the house
The virgin media router has gone from the floor to the top shelf at the front of the house and this honestly doesn't seem to of made any difference whatsoever
Checked websites and it appears to have the latest firmware which is supposed to improve the wifi
Does anybody have any recommendations for any wifi boosters and how they work?

Any help appreciated but please no mains connected Ethernet devices as there simply are not enough sockets

Cheers

I use TP-Link adaptors in my house to provide a good wifi signal in my garage which is about 15 metres away from the house. This enables me to use wifi in the garage and also to enable the security cameras I have to connect. While these devices plug into existing sockets, the units have a built in plug socket so you don't lose any. Had them two years and no problems at all- work brilliantly at all times and no one is trying to mine bitcoins using my devices...

I'd stick the Virgin super hub into modem mode, and use a decent router with better range connected up to it....my 14 year old linksys one has better range. rolleyes

If it's a fairly new super hub then you'll have 2 networks - 5G and 2G - worth checking which you are logging onto, as the 2G has far better range.

Hi thanks for the info
I have the latest virgin media hub 3 and I think I’m on the 5g but not sure will have to check
I did try something similar with modem mode but could not get it to work I tried another router on a Ethernet cable in another room but couldn’t get an internet connection, so I’m not clued up enough to do that! I will have to have a google and see if it’s worth buying another router

Any help appreciated cheers

The 2.4G has far better range but the 5.8G as a result has a lot less contention with the neighbour's 2.4G - I find it significantly faster here as a result.

I have the super hub2 - use the virgin wireless downstairs, and run an ethernet cable upstairs to another wireless router (luckily I had ethernet ports in most rooms when I bought the house, so wiring was already there.)

no reason you could not get a wireless router, and just leave the hub as is, and plug the additional router into one of the other 4 spare ports on the hub.
