Lewis Hamilton - 15/11/2020 21:46

A stunning drive by Lewis Hamilton today in the Hungarian Grand Prix . SEVEN world championships ! Yes he’s had a great car to drive ( designed and built in England never mind the Mercedes badge ! ) but it doesn’t drive itself .....

Just before the start of the race one of the commentators ( maybe Brundle ) asked where would Hamilton want to finish. I thought he’d settle for a podium ( to celebrate another championship in style ) , how wrong I was.

Wet races are great to see from the settee , not so much in person because you’ll probably catch the flu afterwards ! Two I saw in person are Brands Hatch 1970 BOAC 1000 ( Rodriguez in a 917 ) and 1978 International Tourist Trophy at Silverstone ( Keke ( Keijo was the non anglicised name in the entry list I think ) Rosburg ) in Theodore I think .

No doubt about it, Hamilton has made racing history and broken records, but for some reason he’s not held in the same esteem by some like the greats of the past. Seemingly he has the odd exchanges with the odd retired driver. You cannot take away his ability as a racing driver but, it does stand out in the media at times.

Hamilton is incredible and very worthy of his 7 titles. When you lap your team mate, you must be doing something right.

It is an amazing achievement, yesterday was just another drive that must be disheartening for the other drivers. Whilst it isn't possible to say who is the best of all time anyone suggesting Hamilton shouldn't be at or very near the top is just plain wrong! And yes, he has on average been in the best car, but how many champions haven't been. And it is the best car in part due to his inputs, but he has consistently over-performed in all the cars he's had in F1, some of which definitely weren't the best.

A very well deserved 7 times champion. I was trying to think if there is a record he hasn't yet set, possibly number of fastest laps but not sure.

Yes a great achievement but I don't follow him any more, not since his opinion started to be more important then racing, he could have done that through social media on his own page instead of making everyone feel like that 'have to take a knee' for BLM, all lives matter so wearing a gold chain and padlock driving a Merc kinda makes you a hypocrite I'm afraid, a very rich one, but well done for 7 world championships.

+1 ^^^ what he said, the fame and fortune has sadly made Lewis lose touch a little

I agree with you on that. I defended him against people who didn't like him because of his lifestyle, frankly I don't care about what drivers do away from the track, it is what they do during the weekends of racing, and particularly how they behave on track that I am interested in. However, this year I can't defend his actions because he has taken them to the track, and many of those actions are hypocritical. Still think his driving is astounding however.

The thing is you get very little insight into what most of the drivers are like away from the cameras. Through her work, she’s had exposure to some of the ex-F1 drivers and some are pretty unpleasant.

I’m of the view, like others, that it’s what Hamilton does on the track that matters and he is quite extraordinary.

There is a reason why the best drivers get the best car. But they have to work to ensure that car remains the best, or close to it.

Re: Lewis Hamilton - 17/11/2020 21:32

Yes he has got likely the best car but then so did Bottas and Lewis lapped him so that tells more about his ability to drive, adapt and maximise in difficult conditions.

Russell --- I rest my case - 5" taller so,seat didn't fit, shoes didn't fit ,two practice sessions --pissed all over the field

Bottas ---would be nowhere in any other car ( can even be in the Merc )

Hamilton --merely better than average

Mercedes --Stunningly good car

Russell had nothing to loose and everything to gain, a great drive and the best race this year by far, loaded with drama smile

I understand that Russell did very well and he is no stranger to a F1 car.
What he hasn't done yet, unlike Lewis Hamilton,is to consistently perform better than all the other F1 drivers these past few years.

I have to consciously forget about various drivers personalities and try to judge them on thier driving capability alone.

At some point we all decline in our chosen sport or profession and some people are just simply better than others at a chosen sport or profession.

It's a bit like clients/customers. You don't have to like them to take thier money!

Russell drove incredibly well all weekend, it would have been a thoroughly deserved win if he had achieved it. His second overtake of Bottas was one of those "wow" moments that are too rare in F1. But, I agree that one race doesn't make it absolutely clear. There have been races where Bottas has clearly been better than Hamilton. There was a season where Rosberg overall outscored Hamilton - but he found the effort so high he wasn't prepared to go through it again. Hamilton is a driver very much above average, and has been able to operate at that level for more years than many can manage at any level.

That doesn't take anything away from Russell over the weekend, doing that in the first weekend in the car was an incredible achievement.

And in the meantime, all the ass-kicking shoes at Mercedes have been especially polished...

Cracking job, even if it were a one-off, by Russell and a damn good chance for him to come out of the season with 26 points... completely screwed by pit insanity.

When you think about it, F1 is a perfect analogy for life - those who have the best resources available to them (and also have at least a minimum level of competency) are destined to win.

Well, it seems it was a radio issue, which will no doubt please you to no end Neil

Quote
Andrew Shovlin
A frustrating result when we were looking very strong for a 1-2 finish and a win for George. The pitstop issues were linked to the way our radio system handles the priorities of messages which caught us out in a big way. As the safety car came out, we were calling for the crew to be ready, and for the tyres for each car to come into the pitlane. At the time that message was going out, another radio message for a very brief period prevented one of the key messages getting through to one set of tyre collectors. It’s something that’s been lurking in there and could have caught us out at any time over the past few seasons. The ensuing problems were all a function of this single issue and certainly not the fault of anyone in our pit-crew who have done a great job all year.
