adjusting the level of Power Assistance Steering

adjusting the level of Power Assistance Steering - 20/02/2018 17:20

Hi can't find any posts on the forum where this has been mentioned, so apologies if this is a dupe of a previous posting.

I would like to reduce the amount of assistance I get through the hydraulic Power Assistance Steering on my 20VT6 (yr 2000)

Any thoughts or pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

P.S. The reason is that the steering for a track focussed car is just too light! And ... I might look at Electric conversion, but not for a while.

Good question. Would like to know as well as I also feel that the steering for track use is too light.

You'd have to open the pump and see if you could re-shim the pressure relief valve so it opened at a lower pressure. If not you could plumb an external bleed valve between the supply and return lines.

What suspension do you have? If you can fit “max-caster” top mounts, you will get a stronger self-centering effect, which will feel like less power steering

Osrav adjustable shocks + Eibach springs.

As szkom said - recalibrate the pressure valve, or fit orifice restrictor on the pressure side, or junk the pump and go the electric way.
