The width of your rim is wider than the width of the tyre.

I wouldn't do it, regardless of if it can be stretched or not.

Any reason you wouldn't as others have? Is it dangerous or something

Tubeless tyres rely on the bond between the tyre and side wall of the rim. You probably can get away with it but I think there could be issues if the pressure within the tyre drops as this will reduce the assistance it supplys the bond. Therefore dramtic loss of pressure...

It's probably possible, but as other have written, not a good idea.

A wider tyre would protect the rim far more as well. Not much point getting (what I assume are) cheaper tyres if you end up having to refurb the wheels due to lack of protection.

i think stretched tyres look cool, and have 215 on my 8" rim, a lot of the vw guys seem to do it all the time, with no problems. however.... even tryes with so called rim protectors wont stop the kerb monster eating your alloy if you get too close.....

Re: can i fit 215 instead of 225 tyres on 8.5 inch rim - 09/02/2009 11:51
I wouldnt say a 215 on 8" rims is streched being as I have 225 on standard 7.5" wheels
7.5" = 190.5mm with 205 tyres = 15mm wider
7.5" = 190.5mm with 225 tyres = 35mm wider
8" = 203mm with 215 tyres = 12mm wider
8.5" = 216mm with 215 = 1mm thiner!

Re: can i fit 215 instead of 225 tyres on 8.5 inch rim - 09/02/2009 12:30
ok its not really straetched i admit, its just enough to render the tyre rim protectors useless though, the piont was more that if you go more, i.e 215 on a 8.5 youll need to be careful when parking

or just buy wider tyres

Re: can i fit 215 instead of 225 tyres on 8.5 inch rim - 09/02/2009 13:11
215 fit but is it safe NO!!!
i got my avzes c 18s , they had 215 on front when got them
years ago one morning while going round a roundbout my tyre fell off wheel nsf, it was hanging off the front of the rim
the bead on the avzes wheels is at the rear of rim so when it goes ,the tyre will come off wheel
225 fits just but wider would be better for rim protectors

Re: can i fit 215 instead of 225 tyres on 8.5 inch rim - 09/02/2009 13:14
exactly! 225's will give a similar to standard level of protection. something like a 240 will be more like a 225 on standard rims

the concensus now is that stretched tyres are illegal
# Regarding wheel width, they must not protrude more than 30mm beyond the wheel arches. (Council Directive 78/549/EEC)
# Regarding the fitting of the tyre "Each tyre fitted to the vehicle shall be of a nominal size appropriate to the wheel to which it is fitted." Sec16(4 The Motor Vehicles (Approval) Regulations 2001'. The fact that the fit was outside manufacturers recommendations should be very persuasive to convince a court that the tyre was not fitted in a manner suitable to qualify it as 'approved'.
# Section 40A RTA 1988 states "A person is guilty of an offence if he uses, or causes or permits another to use, a motor vehicle or trailer on a road when...the condition of the motor vehicle...or of its accessories or equipment...is such that the use of the motor vehicle or trailer involves a danger of injury to any person." Evidence to support this offence would include measurements of your wheel and tyre, and statements from the manufacturer or a tyre expert, indicating the potential risk of fitting outside their recommended parameters, namely, overheating, grip loss, unpredictable performance and behaviour etc etc.
# If your vehicle was involved in a collision, especially one involving injury, where the cause led to the loss of control of your vehicle, dangerous driving may be considered, especially strengthened by Sec 2A(2) where "A person is also to be regarded as driving dangerously for the purposes of section 1 and 2 above if it would be obvious to a competent and careful driver that driving the vehicle in its current state would be dangerous."

its also interesting to note that you don't have to be driving dangerously to be prosecuted for dangerous driving - you can also be done if driving a car that is in a dangerous condition (which could be applied to stretched tyres
Of course, if your stretched tyre came off the rim and you caused a crash which killed someone, you'd probably get a 'death by dangerous driving' which I believe can carry a custodial sentence.
So - are you really willing to risk a spell at HM Pleasure just to have stretched tyres?

Re: can i fit 215 instead of 225 tyres on 8.5 inch rim - 10/02/2009 19:25
When I collected my re-furbed wheels a few weeks ago there were some porsche replica rims with narrow tyres on them, as in so narrow there was more than half inch of rim exposed on each side. when I asked the guy about them he said it was a new trend as a lot of VAG drivers were doing it. What a bunch of retards! not only does it look stupid it must be dangerous. Wheel and tyre manufacturers hardly invest so much in research and engineering so some bunch of idiots can just do what they want and put lives at risk. with the pressures put on tyres especially with high speed cornering this can only be asking for trouble. Rant over

Re: can i fit 215 instead of 225 tyres on 8.5 inch - 27/04/2009 20:34
I used to run 215 tyres on 9" on my old car... and it's alot of stretch
never managed to rip one off, and not for lack of trying!
but, would I do it on the Coupe, no way
it's capable of proper speed, and I wouldn't be happy, on my (quite nippy) shopping hatch though, I didnt mind as much

7.5" = 190.5mm with 205 tyres = 15mm wider
7.5" = 190.5mm with 225 tyres = 35mm wider
8" = 203mm with 215 tyres = 12mm wider
8.5" = 216mm with 215 = 1mm thiner!
This confuses me a tad.. Will I be ok running 205's on a 7.5" (17") rim then? They are currently fitted with 215's in a very sorry state..

Re: can i fit 215 instead of 225 tyres on 8.5 inch - 28/04/2009 08:57
As far as width is concerned yes. The standard rims are 7.5" and the standard tyres as fitted by fiat were either 205 or 225 so anything in this range will be fine.

225 on standard wheels would look like balloons surely? =/
A helpful tool I always used to use when changing tyre sizes on my bravo:
http://fiatboo.co.uk/tyres.htmgoing from 205/50/16 to 205/40/17 puts my speedo out slightly, when I'm doing 70 by the clock I'm actually only doing 68.22mph..

225 was standard for a plus - I have 225 on my car and they look great

No, because the aspect ratio is dropped from 50 to 45, making the sidewall height the same

Re: can i fit 215 instead of 225 tyres on 8.5 inch - 28/04/2009 11:12
i would go for 225 or even 235 on a 8.5 rim.
lot of guys streach them on the vw scene and drift car.
it should give you less tyre flex as you are streching the sideways and they can't move.
i like the look of steched tyres to be fair but not overly streched.
i would go for 225 as that will look quite streched anyway and go for a lower profile.

Isn't the standard rims 16x7"? Now I'm not 100% sure, but I seem to recall that being stamped into the set I used to have.
