Different tyre sizes front and rear!

Different tyre sizes front and rear! - 04/04/2009 18:42

Hope this topic is not in wrong place! Does anyone else run different tyre sizes front and rear? The coupe I recently purchased has 225/40/16 on front and 225/50/16 on rear. Any ideas?

I do - but I have wider rears than fronts i.e. opposite to you. Not intentional, as they were originally 225's all round, but I didn't want to waste a decent set of Michelins on the rear when I changed the fronts for 205 Goodyears.

Not had any problems with this set-up personally - can't really comment on the other way round though!

Apparently it's illegal to have wider tyres on front than rear. So I was told by a tyre fitting place.

But the tyres you've quoted are exactly the same width. It's just your fronts are lower profile.

And both tyres are the wrong size...

They should be either 205/50 R16 or 225/45 R16

I'm not 100% sure where you would stand with your insurance company either if they were not a standard Fiat Coupe size. How much tread is left on them?

the fronts need replacing to be honest! Might change all four I think.

If you have the bread spare now, then might not be a bad idea. There are a stack of threads in the appropriate section - probably General Maintenance & Handling - about which tyres are recommened for Coupes by forums members that run various brands.

its not illegal to fit different size tyres as long as they are the same on each axle. most rwd cars run wider and lower profile tyres on the back compared to the fronts.
it treams of handling on a fwd car it might affect it slightly and for that reason i would change them.
mixed brands as well isn't a massive deal. i have done this on many cars and its never caused a problem as long as they are all decent tyres. only time i have use crap tyres on the driven wheels was for drifting but then i was skint.

in other words its not danrous its not illegal and i bvet you won't notice when you change but in a ideal world you would want equal tyres.
