Green barn find resurrection - 22/12/2022 12:19

Hi! I've recently purchased a green metallic 1997 20 V Turbo. It was parked in a barn some time between 2013-2015, and was last started in 2016. The car was well taken care of and working as it should when parked. The mileage is 117.555km = 73k miles. The car was owned by the bloke I got it form for 20 years.Sitting

The engine has been rebuilt, at one stage, due to a blown head gasked caused by overheating after a coolant leak. The bonnet had a respray at one point, other than that, it is completely original. before storage

Sitting i a barn in Norway has consequences. It gets properly cold in the winter, and if the temperature suddely rises, condensation will form. This causes any bare metal surface to corrode. It is most noticable on nuts and bols, but on the aluminium parts on the engine as well. I've seen it on other cars stored dry, but temperature exposed. corrosion

The car has some interesting options: linen leather interior, and some original interior accessories fitted, such as fake wood and aluminium trim. Interior

My plans are to go over everything that needs doing after sitting so long, clean up paint and interior, and do some subtle opgrades: strut brace, poly bushings up front, a hybrid turbo and a gtech chip along with a stainless exhaust.

Disassembly of the front end in progress, in order to fix rust, clutch and brake hydraulics.

I found a few suspicious areas, are these bent?

Please let me know if you have a lead on any of these

Ok Hello, a short update.

I’ve been disassembling most of the front of the car; suspension and engine bay. The purpose of this is: servicing the engine, addressing som surface rust and replacing parts that generally wear out. I’m about to address the differential output seals, and while the engine is completely disconnected, I’ll do the timing belt/wp. That’s about as deep I’m gonna go.

I got most parts from autodoc, but the following items were hard to find: clutch hose, radiator, motor mounts, upper radiator hose, coolant reservoir. I’ve finally got a lead on most of the parts, and loads of brackets and fittings off to be sand blasted. The black stuff is going to be powder coated, and the shiny stuff will be yellow plated.

I hope I’ll be turning the ratchet the other way around soon, and start installing shiny bits. Transitioning from the destructive phase to the constructive.

The rust is limited to the gap between the 2mm tower reinforcement and the body itself. No rust in the hollow frame structure. In the photo you see before/after removing the outer layer.

I’ll have to repair this in multiple steps, building it back up from the inside and out.

These bad boys are finally done! 17” Abarth wheels, petal design.

Considering 205/45-17 as it’s the closest, but 215 seems to have better availability.
