Curborough Sprint Track June 3rd 2012

Posted By: Anonymous

Curborough Sprint Track June 3rd 2012 - 07/03/2012 16:38

As this is on a Sunday it's a bit more expensive, if we get the full 20 spots available it works out at £38 each.

Not worth it IMHO - too few people to make it worth their while

Better to retire to the pub at Fradley Junction - we know we get a very good reception there

My point is that it falls on the weekend of the Tatton Park Show, one that people complain about when it's not arranged for them and when it is arranged for them, very few attend and now most of the potential attendees will be at Curbourough.

Don't you folks talk when organising dates for events? Coupes will be under represented at two events on this date rolleyes

Re: Curborough Sprint Track June 3rd 2012 - 08/03/2012 20:32

Paul said earlier in the thread that June 3rd was the only weekend date available at Curborough this Year Dan.

Lots of folks wanted a weekend session so it was Hobson's choice unfortunately.

Ok Pete, that's fair enough!

Shame I'm not able to make it, there could be some mightier still machinery on the roads by then driving

A proper stretch of their legs must be pencilled in for Donny (or Oulton) later this year?

You'll have to pay beforehand, I'll start collecting the money after Spa.

Paul - I assume the limit is on the number of cars, not the number of drivers?

If so, I *might* just let my son drive the Coupe round, although I'll need to turn the boost down a bit - stepping from a Punto 1.2 into a Coupe might be a bit of a leap.....

Yes Nigel the limit is number of cars. I'm trying talk Lesa into coming and giving it a go in my car.

What, still? tongue wink You won't be able to use that excuse when you post the fastest time laugh

I made an interesting discovery yesterday (well, for me). I bought a ported 1600 Supersport engine two years ago to make my car more competative in class. I actually found it was only about a second a lap faster at Castle Combe than my 1400 which was disapointing. Having thrown a lot of time and a mapped ECU at the car we (Flea) still struggled to get more power from the engine.
Under advice from an engine builder I measured the cam lobes and found they are standard Rover cams, NOT Supersport versions! grr
It's almost a relief to find this at last and to know that another 10BHP would be available should I change them!
Long story short, if I lose my crown this year, I blame the relatively standard engine wink rolleyes
Posted By: Nigel

Re: Curborough Sprint Track June 3rd 2012 - 04/04/2012 20:54

LOL @ Dave...

If I could just borrow some track tyres, I reckon I could just about match your time - can't remember how close it was last year, but we weren't very far apart IIRC.

Still - I'm doing a daily rain dance - that'll sort the FWD men from the RWD boys....
Posted By: Nigel

Re: Curborough Sprint Track June 3rd 2012 - 04/04/2012 20:59

Edit - I take that back - you were very nearly a second faster than me by the end of the day - it would be pretty difficult to make those gains without resort to some seriously sticky rubber.

There's also the possibility that my bigger turbo is just about laggy enough to actually slow me down compared with last year

There - that's my excuse set out, just in case....

Pah you have 0.6 litres more than me and mine IS standard tongue laugh The engine won't be the issue on mine, it's perfect for sprinting. The cold tyres and brakes will be the problem laugh

Re: Curborough Sprint Track June 3rd 2012 - 08/04/2012 13:24

Just for a bit of fun, I've checked the best times from Curborough's 2011 calendar and compared them with the times from the FCCUK event in May 2011

For reference, the 20vt would come into the "over 2000cc" classes, as there's a 1.7 multiplier on the actual cc for forced induction cars.

So - the best Curborough times for the relevant classes for the "long course" (two laps) are:

Standard production - up to 2000cc (Coupe n/a class) - 67.1 sec (Honda S2000)
Standard Production - over 2000cc (Coupe turbo class) - 64.7 sec (Porsche 993RS)
Modified production - up to 2000cc - 64.46 sec (Honda S2000)
Modified production - over 2000cc - 64.27 (Ferrari 348)

And for Fishy Dave and DaveT -

Modified kit up to 1700cc - 60.4 sec (Westie 1600)
Modified kit up to 2000cc - 55.9 sec (Westie 1900)

And just to bring it home - the course record for TWO laps is just under 50 seconds shocked

Re: Curborough Sprint Track June 3rd 2012 - 08/04/2012 15:58

Ooh, interesting stuff, thanks Nigel. Shows how far off the pace I am.
HERE it shows that Westfield is running 206BHP (mine is 138), weighs 535kg (mine is 560kg) and is using list 1b sticky tyres (I was running old 1a). There, that will do for the excuses again laugh

Sound an interesting meeting. Isn't it a 1.4 multiplier applied to forced induction cars though Nigel?

Yes, I'm still lingering around (looking out for a Black LE for sale)...

Yes - you're right - I couldn't remember and I couldn't be bothered to look it up rolleyes

When I was competing in Sprints in my first Coupe, I was at a hige disadvantage, as I was competing with cars like Porsche 911s and Ferraris.

Re: Curborough Sprint Track June 3rd 2012 - 26/04/2012 16:34

Interestingly, Matt will be driving one or even both of my Coupes at Curborough - it'll be fun to see how well he compares with some of the Coupe owners

I'm going to have to turn the boost down on the Moonie though - not sure I want him to find 400+ bhp halfway round the hairpin, when he's only used to 60-ish bhp from his daily driver....

It'll also be his first ever drive of a Coupe, other than reversing one up the drive and bringing it back down again - hardly a test of his car-handling skills...

Matt is telling me he doesn't much like Coupes (he has a Mk1 Golf and he want's a VW Bora to replace his Punto Mk2b daily driver)

I'm determined to get him into something stylish and Italian, so it's a ploy to get him hooked on Coupes. I reckon 300bhp at the beginning of the day will be persuasive, but I might just let him have all 450 down the straight at the end of the day, just to seal the deal.....

As for the chances of him beating me.... what do you think?

Personally, I DO like the idea of a coupé, I find it harder to go faster for less - but as a 65 mile/day commuter, I'll stick with something diseasal and german thanks! Also, I think that 450bhp is too much - I've been a passenger in that car more than anyone else, and it can quite easily make be very silent shocked

Re: Curborough Sprint Track June 3rd 2012 - 04/05/2012 23:40

I remember the first time we (X-Power Forums) hired the Curborough Sprint Track. I'd spent a small, no, considerable fortune fettling a MGF for track use. I lost control and only very slightly missed the little shed at the bottom end of the track which I believe houses the timing gear. I was on a warm-up lap and I'm no idiot (honest). That F was increadibly tricky, just like the circuit. Later track days proved more successful. I wish I was going!

Re: Curborough Sprint Track June 3rd 2012 - 16/05/2012 15:58

We need to place a deadline of this (and PM all the non-payers) - if they don't pay by (say) the end of the weekend, it should be thrown open to reserves and non club members.

This has happened every year - people that have confirmed simply don't pay and we end up with less thsn 25 cars, which can end up costing the Club money, as the cost of the circuit hire does not drop if we don't generate a full turnout.

Unless you have put on loads of weight since breaking your foot and being a Daddy, then you should fit fine. Earplugs, not really, just need to shout a bit at motorway speeds.

Re: Curborough Sprint Track June 3rd 2012 - 22/05/2012 08:47

I'm thinking either some kind of chain pub like Wetherspoons/Harvester or fast food like KFC/McDonalds? If not bring a packed lunch and just keep on driving driving yipee

Re: Curborough Sprint Track June 3rd 2012 - 22/05/2012 08:52

I think if we bring our own food then we will get the full use of the track. Because there's so many of us we always go over the hour break.
Posted By: Nigel

Re: Curborough Sprint Track June 3rd 2012 - 22/05/2012 09:01

Are we not compelled to stop driving for an hour due to noise regs?

Regardless, I think the best solution is for us all to bring a packed lunch and we can have an FCCUK picnic

Might be worth checking the wind direction though - there's a sewage farm behind the big poplar trees and if the wind is wrong, you probably wouldn't want to sit and eat al fresco. Its thankfully rare though.

If not, there's a MaccyD drive-through about 5 miles away

Re: Curborough Sprint Track June 3rd 2012 - 22/05/2012 09:54

If Begbies mate doesnt come then there is a space.

Your right Nigel we have too stop for an hour but by time we normally get too the pub and back it's well over the hour.

Maccys is a good option though.

Some of you might not know that if you got your insurnace with Neil Willies Insurance Brokers you are entiteled to a free track day cover if an event is organised by the club. If you want the free cover you need to ring Nikki with the following details: your name, date of an event and where it's taking place.

Cheers,
Jack wink

Cheers,

A note of caution.

Not every policy organised through Neil Willies Insurance includes track day cover. The Classicline policy underwritten by Brit Insurance Ltd does not.
Your schedule will tell you the extent of your cover.
Posted By: deannn_20VT

Re: Curborough Sprint Track June 3rd 2012 - 30/05/2012 18:24

interesting note petep as I am fairly confident that mine is with Brit Insurance and Nikki confirmed today that I'm covered as long as it's and event organised by the club.
Posted By: PeteP

Re: Curborough Sprint Track June 3rd 2012 - 30/05/2012 18:31

My car is insured under a Classicline policy and underwritten by Brit Insurance Ltd and I can assure you that it does not cover track use as standard.

As you say deannn_20VT, there is a policy available from them which does give track cover, which is why I said that not every policy with Neil Willies covers that particular activity.

The answer is to check with them if you are unsure after reading your policy document.

Curborough in the rain is surprisingly entertaining, but I really wouldn't want to be driving a lightweight RWD Caterham/Westfield in it - it's hard enough keeping the bloody things pointing the right way in the dry....

Still - it should give me a chance of keeping up with FishDave, Jonny and Dave_t

Re: Curborough Sprint Track June 3rd 2012 - 31/05/2012 13:34

My last foray in the rain ended up costing me a new front wishbone, a new nose cone and a new radiator.

Re: Curborough Sprint Track June 3rd 2012 - 31/05/2012 19:21

Hmmm - seems my rain dance from many weeks ago may be about to pay off....

FishyDave and Dave_t - if it's wet, I will probably decline each of your very kind offers to have a drive in your cars - I've heard so many stories about how twitchy they can be (and of course Dave_t's nosecone/kerb interface while merely pulling onto a roundabout). I don't much fancy my chances of keeping it on the blackstuff if you admit to struggling.

I'll bring the race boots just in case, but otherwise, I'll revel in the opportunity to make a humble FWD car go faster than a RWD track weapon....

Dad's just had his wheel bearing done at Motormech, so he's got no excuse now wink

I reckon there's some foul play here though, it's funny how the day before an event where Nigel isn't guaranteed victory, his Coupé develops a mysterious oil leak ...

Maybe it's just having a bit of a wee with the prospect of my brother/Nigel's eldest son behind the wheel driving

Re: Curborough Sprint Track June 3rd 2012 - 02/06/2012 17:09

Just came back from the garage. Got rid off the air from the system, flushed the fluid (mixture of Millers 300+ and ATE Super Blue) then on the way back home one gear selector link slipped off so I had to spin it and back to the garage again... You gotta love this cars! banghead Still some work to do but that's for after the track day. laugh

See you tomorrow!

Yup - one problem fixed (utterly fubar'd rear wheel bearing) - two more discovered (blowing flexi-joint in the downpipe and a decent oil leak, probably from the oil supply pipe to the turbo)

Still - the oil's only getting on the back tyres..... rolleyes

It's slippery.....

Couldn't even get the power down at base boost - front tyres are on the wear-bars which was just too much to ask of them

Didnt stay to long just a quick hello, got soaked and a spin in mayzons coupe.
Cheers Martin, certainly event full lap with some very much sideways action at the bottom corners.

Seems very slippy indeed. Hope you had fun in the afternoon guys.

Well that was fun laugh I think it was JBT that got the quickest time with a 1.14.8.

Thanks to all those that helped out with the running of things.

Hope next time is a bit drier.

Re: Curborough Sprint Track June 3rd 2012 - 03/06/2012 19:02

BUT as we were timing to 2 decimal places only, there was a 3 way tie between JBT, Sandytim and Fishy Dave, so well done to all of those at 1.15!!!

It was very wet, it was cold and it was miserable, but what a great day and good to see so many hardened coopsters out there (and the other lads). Begbie had a 300 mile round-trip, so fair play to him bow

Great fun as usual, just a shame it was too wet to bring the Indy.

Cheers for the rides out in Senny Dave's chauffeur-driven 7 series and Fishy Dave's Caterham and Celica. Who'd have known they made a RWD celica laugh crazy The 7 series looked like a barge, but actually handled very tidily.

Begbie's car really impressed. That'll be a monster in the dry cool

Looking forward to the next one evil

Proccy as im sorry I said fat.m was quicker than you.its unfair that the only 14sec time gets taken away.
Your hair looked great you were faster than him and you looked slender as always.

Seriously though many thanks to Paul for organising this and for those who spent the day in the rain on the flags.
Highlight was going out with sennydave in the v8 BMW until Dave kindly took me for a lap in the caterham.
Scared the living day lights out of me and all credit to the best driver out there, for controlling it in such conditions.
My car was great and I have never had to concentrate so hard.
Was a constant fight to keep it on the track whilst pushing the times more and more .

Look forward to the next one.

Also, car pissed me off just when I was about to set my fastest lap time tongue the gear linkage came off the pin again - wooohooo!

JBT - thanks for your help and for the passenger ride in your rocket!

It was goo fun and it was good to meet new fellow coupe owners and attach names to faces. Thank you everyone involved in organising the day.

Video's I'll do tomorrow, including my flymo incident and my expertly caught slide into the first corner laugh Jack, shame your video has buggered up frown But your wheels and helmet are in the garage until the next Ace meet.

Thanks to the flag people, timing people and everyone who stood out in the rain thumb

Re: Curborough Sprint Track June 3rd 2012 - 03/06/2012 20:45

My 1st time at curborough shame I didn't take my own coupè but apart from the cold wet rain it was a good day, watching you all try your best to get the fastest yet safest times from your cars, meeting some new faces and old friends, a few slips n slides but all went well smile

Can I just say a big thank you to the lads that did there bit in helping with flags and timing, that way everyone gets a fair share of track time, and porkypaul you did a great job off today from organising the day, collecting payments, keys and setting the track up so it was safe to use, you did a grand job, looking forward to the next track day where I shall hopefully be in attendance with my own coupè work permitting laugh

Re: Curborough Sprint Track June 3rd 2012 - 03/06/2012 20:55

A cracking (if damp!) day out ... and great to meet old faces and new smile

It was a real shame that I couldn't bring the Westy out to play ... with no roof, it would have turned into swimming pool laugh

I tried my best to squeeze a decent time out of my Seat but its peak speed down the straight of 60 was hampering my efforts somewhat!

Some great driving on display though ... with particular mention to Fishy, JBT and Senny Dave. Also to Sandy Tim, for his dark horse performance.

Finally a massive thank you to PorkyPaul for organising such a great day, and to all the people who took turns on the start smile

Roll on the next one (hopefully dry!)

Great fun- thanks Paul for organisation and hard work.

Always good to see the familiar faces along with new ones.

I think I was the slowest coop driver so obviously I deserve a prize smile
I tried my best but I think Porto coloured coops may not be cut out for tracking - either that or I'm a crap driver.

Thanks Shaun(crazy legs), Steve(Proccy)and Sandy Tim for the passenger rides.
Although I asked JBT twice(very nicely) for a ride he refused - because he was fighting for top spot. So JBT, you owe me.

Re: Curborough Sprint Track June 3rd 2012 - 03/06/2012 23:59

What a great day, thank you for arranging this, and continuing to welcome us ex-Coupe owners.

The weather really added to the event, just a shame that once again it meant that Dave T, Jonny and myself didn't get our Sevens out on track at the same time (wimps tongue ;)).

The competition remained close through the day with the lighter rain periods producing the fastest times. Aside from one ten minute spell after lunch most of the best times were set in the morning. It's amazing that the best times of the day were shared between the most powerful Coupe, a near standard Coupe and a Caterham!

I enjoyed the sideways moments and sharing them with a few passengers. The pleasant surprise was how good the Celica was! Far from being the understeering car I remembered at Combe last year it was remarkably tail happy, to the point that a number of you thought I must have been using the handbrake. A number of times I had to use full opposite lock and plenty of power to catch a big slide, wish I had some film of it now. The Celica was only two seconds slower than the Caterham in these conditions!

I expect we all have thoughts of ...if only.... for me they were wishing I had experimented with wet lines sooner in the day and being braver in the that first corner. Maybe less time spent sideways might have helped too driving laugh

The standards of driving seemed excellent with various cornering and braking techniques being tried, including the handbrake Begbie? laugh

Couple of videos so far -

Thanks Dave - I was under the shelter for all those photos - couldn't be bothered getting wet for any better angles...

I've now recorded all the results. Very interesting to see how tight the times were (excluding the occasional excursion into the scenery... wink )

Last year, in the dry the times were quite varied (see my post about 2/3 down the page)

However, this year, all drivers were far more consistent, suggesting that the limits were much easier to reach and far harder to exploit

Best (or equal best) times highlighted

Re: Curborough Sprint Track June 3rd 2012 - 04/06/2012 10:58

My commentary on the day....

Prize for the day (IMHO) must go to Sandytim for the really early 1.15 and then repeating it twice later in the day. Modest power, assisted by brand new tyres and very tight, controlled lines was definitely the way to go. Tim also managed the highest average speed across all of his runs, with 45.47mph

FishyDave somehow managed to coax the rather wayward Caterham round for a pair of 1.15s late in the day. Special prize to Dave for one end of his car travelling further than the other.

Next prize goes to JBT - I simply don't know how he managed to put down all his prodigious power to equal Dave and Tim's 1.15 (TBH, JBT would have probably taken the honours for FTD if we'd been bothering to record to one decimal place - I think one of his 1.15s was actually a 1.14.8

The consistency prize goes to Ecrab with just three seconds difference between his best and worst runs (over 13 runs)

And some useless stats....

Total number of runs = 189
Total mileage covered = 167.2
Total (timed) time on track = 3.82 hours
Average mph = 43.75

Go easy on Poor FattM as he did have the following issues:-

Bald tyres
Snapped coil spring
oil leak
Misfire
Low compression
Low oil pressure
No fuel
No oil
No boost
Turbo smoke
Only one wheel nut per wheel
No wipers
Electrical fault
Various electrical faults
Coolant leak
Split brake pipe
Radiator spraying coolant on the windscreen
Crankcase compression
Inlet donuts split
Spark plugs missing
Fuel pump weak
O2 sensor error
AFR Fault
5 drums of red diesel in the boot
And finally abnormal amount of heat coming from the cabin.
