Time attack / time trial based events

Time attack / time trial based events - 19/07/2012 09:38

Ive always liked the idea of time attack, ie being a competative sport with a lower risk of damage/accidents, but since the official time attack has grown over the last few years, it has become less accessible (ie higher entry costs), more restrictive on allowed parts (tyre makes etc due to sponsorship) and having to spending thousands on development to be competative.

Does anybody know of club class series, I have no problem taking upto a national B class 'race' or 'non race' (for sprint) license, that is similar.

I may have the possibility of some sponsership, and i will be looking to develop both myself and the car in the process.

Any help appreciated driving

I have the ideal class B run on treaded track day tyres car for you. Yes Time Attack is getting a bit expensive but it is a very good and well run championship. I raced in it for 3 years and had many victories in FWD class so it would be more than capapble of that or take it to your local race track and compete in the saloons class in Class B with treaede tyres and limited aero. I compete in Class A which is unrestricted and slick tyres but to be honest when you are up against 700bhp evos, Cossies etc and 300 bhp Caterfeilds, even with me driving somewhat at the limit constantly it's difficult to be at the front. In the wet the car is right up there but i feel that realistically the car is better founded in the lower class where it should be right at the front. I can do you a deal with the car without allthe spares package but i'm not sure about the interest free finance! LOL!

Failing that if you ever need any advice on how to prepare your car and go racing then just PM me and i'll give you my number and we can talk racing for a few hours.

Ive kept an eye on your car within time attack for the last few years sparco, although you never seemed to make it to oulton on the occassions i went to watch tongue

As much as would love to use your car, i am just starting out here (it would be like buying a ferrari for your first car) and i already have a car which I plan to use, albeit with a few regulation tweeks required.

Your knowledge and experience would be great though

look for local sprint series, or find the most local spring track then see what events are being held there. Sprints an hillclimbs can be far cheaper then full on circuit racing plus the class structure can be very generous to road based cars but turbo's have a large equiv ratio which can put them in an uncompetitive position.

I ran a car in sprints and hillclimbs for a couple of years. Coupe first, then a Honda CRX.

Great fun, very cheap, not hard on the car. However, it can be bloody infuriating chasing better times - a small mistake "costs" you your run and you then have an hour or so before you get to run again. Also, time on track is very limited - you'll be lucky if you see 15 minutes of competitive driving.

Good way to start though, although if you use the Coupe, you'll be up against all sorts of other fast stuff - the forced induction multiplier puts the effective capacity of the Coupe at about 3.4 litres

No forget the eurosaloons, you wont stand a chance unless of course you were planning on buying a different track car.

that bad?

If i have worked out their classification correctly, depending on their turbo multiplier, i should fall into class C (or possibly Class D)

the class C leaders at the moment are a seat leon and an M3

the class D leaders are suzuki cappachino, and clio cup cars

I dont expect to be class leading by any means, but not a chance? to score even a few points?

I don't plan on buying another car, so i need a championship that will accept the one i got. (most seem to be single make/model)

the experience vs the cost is mainly what im looking for, and that doesnt seem to bad (although ive not got all the info yet).

Ive still got quite a lot to do the car, in terms of 'race prep' there is a fair bit of weight saving i can do, and FIA spec safety set-up is required. So hopefully something i can look into next year.

Fraid it is that bad Ninja, the leon is not a track day special its one of the super copa cars, or the earlier TOCA versions. BMW M3's make incredible race cars. A well driven clio cup will mince a huge array of vehicles obviously being true renault sport cars, and the suzuki is pretty much a single seater with a cuppachino body.

You'll def be allowed in, eligability is never an issue in the eurosaloons (I raced it for 3 years, and Trev Nyssa7 for even longer), but there's plenty of experinced racers and ealthy chaps in it. You will need huge power or a very good base car, in other words a fiat coupe (bravo?) wont cut it, you could buy a much better car for a lot less then it takes get the fiat any where near competitive.

If you like driving on a track do track days, but dont get to attached to you car, because if you want to go into competition then plan that move with a car which will beat the rest, for example in hillclimbs the sub 1400cc road class could be the best way to win the championship with a well planned purchase, points are awarded for class wins you might not be the fasters car in the day but if you are the fastest in your class you'll get the same points as those is the 'higher' classes finishing the same place.

Just a note on circuit racing
You need an ARDS test (cant remember the cost)
Once you pass you pay extra for the license
Then you have to join the BRSCC (for example)
Then you have to join the race series eg eurosaloons
You need race suit and lid
Then you have pay to enter a race

All that cost before actually getting on track,
In sprints
Apply for clubman B license
You join local motorclub (cheap)
You enter sprint
Lid
So much cheaper then circuit racing.

Have a think, look at all tin top, saloon car series. Consider the costs, look at whos leading the classes (look them up on youtube also), then plan you entry. Send me a PM and I'll send you my number if you wish. smile

I was told by someone in the MX-5 Mk1 Championship that the guys at the very competitive edge spend up to £70k a season! You can buy a race prepped Mk1, say from last season, for £5-6k, but then I think most entrants allow around £1k per race weekend.
