Hopefully not much spinning, just a bit of sliding, and you're welcome to have a ride, 50p not needed laugh

Not sure if I trust myself to drive a Coupe again cry

Looking forward to this, Paul, let me know if you would like me to rustle up a few more entries.

Haven't managed to get any firm bookings from anyone else just yet, can open it out to the Lotus Seven club in general if you need some numbers (money) and charge a bit more?
Doctor Frag may make an appearance as a spectator for this one, had a chat on the phone earlier cool

I've sent a pm to those that have put there name down but have not paid yet. So I'll see what happens over the next couple of days then we will have to open it up to other clubs.

Might have to reconsider doing the track again.

Usually I end up jamming a drive in whatever car I bring along about 10 minutes before end of play.

Doubt I'll be doing it in a crash-damaged 180,000 mile diseasel VW bora though rolleyes

More than welcome mate. There's spaces available if you go around the track?

Re: Curborough Sprint Track Sunday 12th May 2013. - 24/04/2013 19:42

This is daft - less than three weeks away and we have just five paid

I think we need to ask for a 100% commitment from the remaining places and if its not forthcoming, it should be opened up, initially to the rest of the Coupe community and then to others.

We can't afford to leave this any longer than this weekend to open it up, otherwise there will be a very poor attendance (and I presume the Club will be out of pocket?)

How about a PM to all paid-up Club members to generate some interest? There must be a few people that might be interested who don't normally look at this area of the forum

If we're extending it to "friends of the Coupe forum", then I may be able to rustle up some interest on the Mk1 Golf forum

Cobblers; count me in. I'll transfer the money tomorrow. Any lessons as to how to drive round the track will be gratefully received. I am sure to lose my front bumper on the kerbs but it will be fun crazy , and if Fishy wants a go I'm sure that lightning doesn't strike twice (according to Ozzy Osbourne rolleyes .

Sorry for the delay, I'm still keen. I've been caught up with moving house and have been trying to get an erratic idling problem sorted on the LE but it's still a mystery what's causing it. Other than that the car is good health so I'll be there and pay tomorrow if that's ok.

Very dodgy.... I'm sure Pinky will beat a few of the Coupes (well, certainly mine) and lead to some excellent You-Tube vids. I'll blag a ride; I'm far too old to be embarrassed, even by Operation Yewtree laugh

Indy has been sold as my brother didn't have time and I wanted something to drive to tracks rather than trailering. So I bought a 172 cup about 8 hours ago! It's track ready- coilovers, camber bolts, rear ARB, stainless cat-back etc etc. All for practically a few pounds I found down the back of the sofa and some furry sweets cool

Might get it stripped inside before then if I get chance. Should be great fun at Curborough.

Get your brother to come. Shotgun a passenger ride laugh

If I can make a suggestion:-
Would all the people on the list be ok with Paying a few quid extra for the folk who have dropped out?
Otherwise there will be a shortfall which isn't fair for the club to pay.

I personally have no issues with paying a few quid extra as I enjoy the event and wish for it to continue in the future.

I might not be able to make this now cry

My strange idling problem has developed into a stuttering during normal driving. Powerfiat looked at it a couple of weeks ago and couldn't find an issue but that was before this stuttering problem.

I think its probably best not to risk it. Trouble is I have now moved to Manchester so can't take it to any of the places I used to know to get it looked at.

As I told Porky yesterday I can't make this day - unavoidable domestics rolleyes . I've already paid, so if the spaces aren't taken up by anyone else no problem. Have a good day guys,

The sun gods may be on your side this time Steve.
But i'm going lightweight this time...I'm taking the front of the stereo and removing the ashtrays.

Oh yes and my new secret weapon.. my carbontech pads.
You will hear me coming when I brake for the roundabout just the other side of Lichfield !

Re: Curborough Sprint Track Sunday 12th May 2013. - 11/05/2013 11:38

Crap.... My rear discs have still not arrived. Not sure what to do, brake not binding but sticking. Could give it a go, or just come up and spectate in the rep mobile. Is there a convoy from down south on the way up?

Also not paid anything, could I pay up on the day or not?

Re: Curborough Sprint Track Sunday 12th May 2013. - 11/05/2013 12:29

If they're not sticking on the road, you may as well drive it up? It's only a short lap, so if you're replacing discs and pads anyway, I wouldn't worry about them overheating lots. They'll barely get warm.

Plenty of passenger rides I'm sure. John needs to be 4 up in the RS6 to slow him down anyway.

What time does it start tomorrow? I'm tinkering with the car today to see if I can fix it. I may still come down anyway but just watch or blag a few passenger rides.

Re: Curborough Sprint Track Sunday 12th May 2013. - 11/05/2013 14:54

It's the rear left that is getting stuck a little when pulling away from a standstill. Either a sticky calliper or warped disc...more apparent after putting in new pads....not sure what to do really. rolleyes

Re: Curborough Sprint Track Sunday 12th May 2013. - 11/05/2013 17:15

Yup, looks like rain in the afternoon, everyone had best set their best times first thing. What time are people arriving? I'll be towing as I have to get the Caterham to North London afterwards (needs new rear panel after slow speed encounter with lorry).
Risk it Suba, the heat might loosen it up confused

Re: Curborough Sprint Track Sunday 12th May 2013. - 11/05/2013 17:15

It should be alright Suba should straighten out with some hard braking.

If everyone can get there for 9ish so we are ready to start at 10.

After several horror stories going through my mind I've decided not to take the RS6.
I have got it up for sale and if I snap the box its another 3k of repairs.

So I am going to bring along an underdog.

Why do RS6s have chocolate gearboxes? Surely they should be built to take a bit of abuse

Re: Curborough Sprint Track Sunday 12th May 2013. - 11/05/2013 20:24

There's a saying when owning one.
Have you replaced the box yet?

If no then it won't be long.

And the box original on mine so its on borrowed time.
I bought it thinking one day the box would go but I didn't anticipate the turbo letting go 20 miles after I bought it.

What a great fun day.
Can I give a big shout out to Nigel and Paul for organising this and spending nearly all their day timing and on the flag.
Also for their advice on damping (Nigel) and tyre pressures (Paul).
To Steve (ecrab) for wimping out on our afternoon wet track coupe battle (although it was great to see your lovely Alfa).
Lastly to the owners of Curborough for placing the earth bank and gate just the right distance from the top hairpin.
If you want your grass back just let me know.

Thanks to all for a great day, just got back with rear brake complaining like a bastard....properly killed it off. Definitely a warped disc now. smile. Nothing broken though, which is good, but had manky
drive home in the rain, and managed to go through just over 100 liters of fuel. laugh crazy

Good to see some old faces, and finally get a ride in begbie's 16vt. Had fun going sideways, planned and unplanned as driver and passenger too. Looking forward to the next one.

Re: Curborough Sprint Track Sunday 12th May 2013. - 12/05/2013 20:51

Yes a great day cool Good to see the usuals, the new and the recently absent laugh

The newly acquired Clio was fantastic. It did many laps wet and dry and took it all in it's stride. A few tweaks are needed and extra weight saving plans are already in progress. I forgot how much fun the Clio is on track; very different from the MK Indy, but I was grinning like an idiot all the same.

Fishy was on form as usual. Cheers for taking the Clio out to show me how it should be done. Highlight was watching him give Suba's RX7 a spanking evil cool

I'm glad we had no major issues with any of the cars too.

Shame I can't make the next one. If anyone is thinking of going, DO IT! A cheap day out and so much fun. If you haven't been on track before it's the perfect introduction, build up at your own pace.

Thanks to Paul for all the hard work as usual smile

Re: Curborough Sprint Track Sunday 12th May 2013. - 12/05/2013 21:18

Great day as usual. Took the opportunity to run 2 different cars this time, much to Sandy Tim's disapointment, as it didn't allow him to beat me in the wet in a Coupe.(tactics Tim)
Big thank you to Paul for organising it once again. I hope this is not this last one. If its not can members condsider Pauls efforts and only say they are going to attend if they are prepared to part with their money.
Thanks also to Fishy Dave for the ride in his Caterham, showing me how my Alfa should have gone round.

Re: Curborough Sprint Track Sunday 12th May 2013. - 12/05/2013 21:57

Thanks to everyone that came, great day again, highlights for me were;

Fishy Dave been bloody quick in what ever he drove,
JBT giving the Volvo death,
Jonny been a hooligan in the Clio,
Nigel pulling a quick lap out of the bag every time someone come close to his time,
Steve's gorgeous Alfa,
and been able get my fat arse in Daves Caterham for a passenger ride.

Fingers crossed today won't be the the last.

Re: Curborough Sprint Track Sunday 12th May 2013. - 13/05/2013 10:02

Another fun day at Curborough, thank you for the effort and cost that goes into these events.
The way that the CSCC operate their race meetings is as follows, maybe we should adopt this too?
Entrants must pay up front to secure their place, no point putting their name down without money. If they can't make the race they can have their money back provided their is a reserve who can take there place and pays in full. If no reserves then regretably they get no refund. Entrants cannot give or sell their race entry to other people either. Hope that makes sense, pretty tired today having got back just after midnight. zzz
The day itself was great fun, good to see my wife driving with a smile on her face.
My first run of the day proved to be my fastest, although my second would have been quicker had I not taken to the grass before Molehill. Thanks to Jonny for letting me drive his Clio 172 Cup; it had been 7 or 8 years since I last drove one. The memories came flooding back as it wagged its tail (the Clios not Jonny) into every corner, great fun and I thought it sounded great.
My favourite bit of the day was driving Subas RX7. I’ve never driven one before so didn’t know quite what to expect. Off the startline I made a pretty rubbish get away getting used to the paddle clutch and didn’t use enough revs on the first run, had a fun sideways moment going into molehill with a dab (ok, a lot) of oppo and a bit of power and we got through ok (not sure if Simon thought we would!).
I really wanted to do that again and kindly Simon said yes. Another poor start, used more of the upper rev ranges this time and slightly less lairy produced a better time. Great fun, a really well balanced car that is very LOUD with pops and bangs on the over-run. I can see that this car would be very quick on a full track where it can stretch its legs.
After my two early runs I didn’t drive the Caterham until mid afternoon, but I was happy to let others drive it before lunch whilst it was still dry. I think Nigel would agree with my prior warnings that it was going to be tail happy this time due to running on old, mismatched tyres front and rear, with too much rake producing a twitchy car. Who got the fastest time between Father and Son?
Funny seeing JBT have to drive barefoot after the first run driving the Seven, his size 12s hitting more than one pedal at a time.
A pity the rain set in as that Exige 240 might have given me quite a bit to worry about producing times of 1.06s in the damp before it got very wet.
The track was very slippery in the afternoon, with the car giving me issues of both understeer and snap oversteer with not much warning of either. I was down to about 10mph to get to the apex around Fradley before drifting out onto the straight. Last run of the day I managed a spin to the infield with no damage done except to the grass and an unfortunate slug.
I must say that I was impressed with the consistency of some drivers times, this is something I need to work on.
Really hope that the July event takes place, can we pay now?

Re: Curborough Sprint Track Sunday 12th May 2013. - 17/05/2013 23:09

I'll drop you an email this weekend dave about sorting out an airfield day, my brother in the Indy hayabusa and my dad are keen.

It's quiet for a single turbo, ported rotary....seriously. smile

The clutch is a pain to pull off with, very easy to bog or spin up, as all probably gathered from my efforts.

It's a shame it was wet in the afternoon, you could have had another couple of runs, and I reckon you would have been close to the 1 min mark in the dry. smile

Definitely up for another session, and could get at least 3 or 4 friends to come along I'm sure, not coupes though I'm afraid.

Was great to catch up....it's been a while!

Re: Curborough Sprint Track Sunday 12th May 2013. - 18/05/2013 16:22

Finally found time to type up the lap times....

Sandytim, JBT and Jonny all needed two lines of times

Best time is highlighted in yellow, fastest Coupe time in green, fastest time of the day in red. Times in blue were various degrees of damp, ranging from a bit moist to standing water.

A few photos will be up later

Cheers Nigel.

Not bad considering I hadn't driven the car in anger before. With a tighter back end shocked I could easily knock that down into the low 6s I reckon.

The wet was fun driving sliding about love

Re: Curborough Sprint Track Sunday 12th May 2013. - 18/05/2013 21:30

Just checked - I'm around 1 second off last year's best time (road modified production cars over 2000cc) - don't forget that forced induction cars have a 1.4 multiplier to their actual engine capacity

For reference, the best time was set in an Impreza - the Sprint championships don't seem to segregate FWD, RWD and 4WD

Also for reference, the outright 2-lap record is 49.11 seconds!!!!

Some useful / useless information for you....

  • Total number of runs(by FCCUK attendees) was 175
  • Total distance travelled = 154.8 miles
  • Total track time was 3h, 38m, 1s
  • Most prolific driver was JBT with 29 runs and 25.7 miles
  • With Crazyleg's efforts, JBT's Volvo did 43 runs and 38 miles, in 55 minutes and 12 seconds, averaging about 41.5mph

So on an £97 tank covering that miles ,with 50 miles left of range in the tank, how much did each mile cost me in fuel?

Wow ! I can't believe how much higher your top speed is down the straight. You are hitting 100mph across the line, where as I was struggling to get to 85mph.
Yet are lap times were similar !
I need more power !
NO !! I didn't just think that. Did I ?

Re: Curborough Sprint Track Sunday 12th May 2013. - 19/05/2013 21:59

I think I managed 87mph (on the racetrack ) down the main straight.

God only knows what speed I hit in the coupe .

Re: Curborough Sprint Track Sunday 12th May 2013. - 19/05/2013 22:15

I managed 89 on the start/finish. Increased rev limiter of 7400 helps as I just save having to change gear. The Indy used to do 100 across the line.

No idea what I was hitting, as half the time I could not work out where the finish line was. laugh I do know that I used 4th a few times, which would mean over 100, and when I did I had brake pretty hard to get the right side of the cone to que up again. crazy
