Just been to Perfect Touch ! - 03/12/2007 22:55

Well, what an interesting day. The team there were totally professional and I really felt safe leaving my car in their hands, even when signing the disclaimer !

Car had a new GT28RS turbo and PA FMIC fitted by Roger at PF and a general health check. Only have the standard downpipe and no fuel pump mod. I was hoping for 310-320 bhp on 97 RON fuel.

Well, dropped car off and went in to town for a coffee. Then got a call from Rob to tell me that slipping clutch had prevented him from mapping up to 1.4 bar \:\( . Still, he was able to map the car at 1.2 and with this I got 301bhp and 285ft/lb.
Graph

So not quite what I had expected, but up from 260 to 300 and more to come when I get new clutch and perhaps a race cat \:\/

Went for a test drive and car was already VERY FAST \:o

All in all a good day with a nice result. Very very happy customer of PT. \:D

Good result.

Get your clutch sorted and enjoy more power \:\)

What internals are you running Mark?

Re: Just been to Perfect Touch ! - 04/12/2007 00:50

So it was your coop \:\)

I was on the phone earlier booking mine in for the 15th and the guy on the phone said he'd just mapped a coop to 301bhp, it was yours he was talking about \:\)

Get yourself a 3" downpipe or one of the GB Blueflame full systems, a Helix Organic clutch and ye'll be well sorted!

Re: Just been to Perfect Touch ! - 04/12/2007 03:00

Steve,

Standard internals, told they are good for ca. 350 and I am not going that high \:\)

Car seems to have monster power now \:\/

Crazy little spike in the midrange, what's that all about?!

Clutch slip?

Did he run 1.2 redline? What boost was ran midrange?

Re: Just been to Perfect Touch ! - 04/12/2007 14:01

Morning Mark,

Once again a great car from the forum....

The spike is from clutch slip, i would expect around 275ftlb without the split second slip.

The car peaked at 1.19bar boost for that run and held 1.12 at the top.

I'm looking forward to getting the car back once the clutch is done so i can put the timing back in the timing back in the midrange and pull a bit more boost.

Thanks again

Rob

Thanks for explaining Rob.

The car really is transformed and I can't wait to return in the new year ! \:D

Re: Just been to Perfect Touch ! - 05/12/2007 18:19

PT have always said that they prefer to be judged on how the car drives rather than purely on the numbers on the graph

Several people have commented that they were slightly disappointed with the headline power figure, but staggered with how well the car performed on the road. This is down to getting a good area under the power curve, rather than just a high peak value.

I can't wait until I can afford a remap - Rob never liked having to hold the car back because of the standard rods. Now I'll be able to let him extract the maximum from the car.

Nice to see another happy customer Rob.

Mark - get a 3 inch downpipe on the car if you can before you go back, you'll make good power with less boost. \:D

Re: Just been to Perfect Touch ! - 05/12/2007 21:05

Suba, in the interests of cost/benefit balance I think I'll just go for the race cat, as this will reduce the back pressure more than the larger pipe in to std. cat scenario.
I know the 3inch DP is helpful, but with cost of new clutch to bear as well.... \:\)

Hi Mark, very interesting.

It will be interesting to see what the Race cat does for your spoolup against my 3" downpipe with std cat and 007's racecat and 3" downpipe....graphs below

compared to your spoolup currently mine looks a bit faster, but obviously 007's is monster....

I presume spoolup isn't affected by the 1.2 bar max, so the downpipe is the only difference between our cars (although you have an RS, and I have an R)

Will be watching with interest..... \:\)

Re: Just been to Perfect Touch ! - 05/12/2007 21:58

Rob,

Are you able to map bigger injectors successfuly on the standard Bosch ECU? I'm looking at getting over 400bhp once all the work is finnished on the engine, so I'll need bigger injectors, probably 440cc. However, there is no point if I can't get it mapped correctly.

Also, my car had similar spikes in the curve when I had it mapped at PT. I thought it might be due to the Apexi.

yes - Nigel and Flea run bigger injectors with a PT live map.

Re: Just been to Perfect Touch ! - 05/12/2007 22:08

Yes, but do they work OK? What is the idle and cold start like? I thought Nigel had a lot of problems at first.

Re: Just been to Perfect Touch ! - 05/12/2007 22:17

I believe Nigel had teething issues due to half the map being on his unichip (which was installed wrong - not by PT). I'd PM them or start another thread.

For my 2p's worth - you wont find another tuner that will live map the car.

Rob took on a job he’d not done before and spent a lot of time and energy on it – he really puts the time and effort in rather than churning out the little jobs for extra quick income and concentrating on the big power skylines they do so well.

I'm a fussy git when it comes to handing over my car to someone and personally I think PT are very thorough and provide a great service.

Re: Just been to Perfect Touch ! - 06/12/2007 01:17

Squid - idle and cold start are utterly perfect - no glitches whatsoever

I'm only having one issue and that's the ECU 'learning' - it alters the base values which in turn appears to be leaning out the PT mapping

I don't know why it does it and I don't know how to turn it off.

A regular reset was the simple solution - not difficult, just inconvenient. I thought about changing the ECU power supply to be fed from an ignition-fed live, rather than a permanent live, but a couple of people have told me that an ECU should only be reset a few minutes after the ignition has been turned off - not sure why, but I've heeded their advice.

However, I've found the solution.....

I've got hold of a special relay that turns off the power after a set time delay. The time delay is adjustable between 1 second and 100 hours, so I can set it so that it resets the ECU every time I kill the ignition, or so that it only resets overnight.

Either way, I'll be running on an almost perfect map all the time.

I know the best solution would be to find the cause of the learning and resolve it, but I can't keep revisiting PT at 320 mile round trip and £110 an hour on the rollers.

Re: Just been to Perfect Touch ! - 06/12/2007 14:01

Nigel, if it is working well for you that's great news. I'll go for bigger injectors then. Which size did you go for and where did you get them from? I was thinking of getting 440's.

Also, where did you get that relay and how did you fit it?

PM me if its a long involved story.

Re: Just been to Perfect Touch ! - 06/12/2007 14:49

Squid

I'm on 384cc (16VT - easy to get hold of)

Bought the relay off ebay - I've asked the seller if he can get more

haven't fitted it yet, as the car is still at Motormech awaiting a new sump

Mark/Ben, I actually use the BF 2.75" DP that came with the full system (incl. race cat). I was going to try the 3" DP but the group buy didn't happen in time for the live map. I also use a V-band adaptor. I may one day change this to a straight 3" but I would need to add a few more mods at the same time (cams) to justify a re-map.

Great results Mark. I run 1.2 bar daily and it's great fun. Next time there's a local meet you can try my 1.35 with a Helix clutch and see what you think of the difference. ;\)

Re: Just been to Perfect Touch ! - 06/12/2007 21:45

you can certainly feel the difference between the two boost settings.

1.4 feels quite abit quicker on the road than 1.2 bar, so come on mark spend the money, the missus wont mind sacrificing her xmas pressies \:P

Agreed.

Most noticeable "power" steps for me:

1. Coupe running properly
2. Standard Coupe with GTEC1 running 1.2bar
3. GT28 Turbo at 1.4bar

I'd go as far to say that a GT28 (at least the RSR) feels like it is only getting into its stride at 1.4 bar!
