North West Rolling Road Day - 21/02/09

Posted By: Anonymous

North West Rolling Road Day - 21/02/09 - 13/10/2008 19:52

In an attempt to keep these on a quarterly(ish) basis, I've arranged the next Rolling Road Day for Saturday 21st February 2009.

Once again, it'll be at Dyno Demon in Neston on the Wirral. Cost will be £35 per car and for that you'll get 3 power runs and 2 colour performance graphs. thumb

This is open to everyone, whether standard or modified. Check the previous threads on here for previous results / comments etc.

Re: Next North West Rolling Road Day - 21/02/09 - 02/12/2008 01:07

OK just a quick update for this;

On Sunday I went across to Dyno Demon to have a chat with the North West Co-ordinators of the SX 200 Owners Club (SXOC) who were having a Rolling Road Day. Upshot is that we have an opportunity to turn this into a "Shootout Day" for both Clubs. \:o

They've asked for an initial 10 places to fill so if everyone's OK with this then I'll throw down the gauntlet. \:D The last time we tried to organise this, the SXOC had to pull out as it coincided with a Time Attack Weekend (well that was their excuse!)

I still want this day to be for everyone though, not just the big power boys (but it would be great if some more of you could get over / back on the road). So if you have a standard coop and just want a Power Run to see what it's doing, still put your name down; if you're running medium power (@ 300bhp) are you up for the challenge? and if you are running big power, how much will it cost to get you to this?

To give you some insight, average power figures on Sunday ran from 250ish to 350ish so it could be quite a closely fought contest for some of us. \:\)

I'll be there for the real wheel drive club

I usually make just over 390 on dynodynamics RR's, but just finished a new rebuild and although still a few bits to do, she has the promise to get a bit more \:D I hope you guys are ready for us

And how you will laugh if my cars not set up properly and doesnt make her normal potential

Craig, I think we should consider some prizes for this (Reps/Mods excepted, so just normal members!), I can put some cash in from the SXOC......

TBH, I've considered a 200SX several times and when I was 18, I lost a £100 deposit on an early shaper, so should be good, even if just to see some big power 200's :-)

OK guys as this is now 6 weeks away, can people please confirm their attendance?

Good news is that Dyno Demon have agreed a reduced price of £35 per car. \:o This represents excellent value (IMO) for the service and attention we get.

Top power figures from the SX guys last time they were there was @ 350bhp so if any of our big power guys are available, that'd be great.

Re: Next North West Rolling Road Day - 21/02/09 - 11/01/2009 17:42

"Your clutch should also be in good condition, there is little or no point in RR'ing a car with the clutch slipping - it will only get worse."

A horrible realisation has hit me, my clutch is not too healthy, it holds (most of the time) but is right at the end of it's travel, even resting my foot on the pedal leds to slip. But near the end of Feb should give me time, and the paydays, to get it sorted. With all the bits and bobs getting sorted this month, a new clutch should see the car near to it's former glory.

Then I just want more power...

Suffice to say, I can't commit yet, but I really do want to make it, never had a RR session before. Call me a roller virgin.

Sorry for the delay guys.

@ Johna - I remember your shock last time when you realised how far it was. With regards to notice, places are finite and as the SXOC are also attending I'll have to operate on "first come - first served".

If anyone wishes to join in, please update on the attendance list.

Re: Next North West Rolling Road Day - 21/02/09 - 19/01/2009 01:18

Hey Craig, I don't think I will be able to make this. The rallye still doesn't have the engine fitted yet. The car is now with my mechanic friend but there's no guarantees it will be finished even in February so I'd best pull out.
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: Next North West Rolling Road Day - 21/02/09 - 25/01/2009 19:09

Going to have to pull out myself, unfortunately, after my exhaust fell off yesterday, i've had to fork out for a replacement, so the clutch is very unlikely to get done. Maybe next time.

OK, following discussions with Dyno Demon and SteA at SXOC we have decided on the following format;

20 minute timeslots with Fiats and 200SX's alternating on the rollers.

So, start time will be 9.00AM. Please enter your names against your preferred timeslot.

9.00
9.20 - SXOC
9.40
10.00 - SXOC
10.20
10.40 - SXOC
11.00
11.20 - SXOC
11.40
12.00 - SXOC
12.20
12.40 - SXOC
1.00
1.20 - SXOC
1.40
2.00 - SXOC
2.20
2.40 - SXOC
3.00

Anyone who wishes to bring non coupé or SX200's will be slotted in at the end - coupés and 200's will have priority on this day.

Both Ste and myself are hoping to make this an Annual Event with a shield / trophy of some description.

Apparantly, most SX200's attending this will be running @ 260bhp so it could be a close bit of competition for those interested.

I won't be making this Craig, I'm down south for my niece's christening.

Interesting to see they have done alternate slots, surely they will have to change the rollers each time?

Re: Next North West Rolling Road Day - 21/02/09 - 15/02/2009 21:28

Well, after getting my car mapped by Flea, it was running wonderfully until yesterday when the bloody clutch started slipping. A paddle clutch as well, i cant believe it, yet alone afford it!

May very well have to drop out of this unless i can miraculously get it done.

Will keep you updated but i'm provisionally out.

Probably leave a nice gap for Nigel's car!

Was really looking forward to seing how the old girl would perform post map as well cry

Re: Next North West Rolling Road Day - 21/02/09 - 15/02/2009 21:55

I think there are only 6 of the SXOC going for definite so there would a place for Nigel.
Edit: If you get it fixed in time even last minute there would be space to run it I think

Re: Next North West Rolling Road Day - 21/02/09 - 15/02/2009 22:12

I dont have a clutch yet but this place gets good reviews;
http://www.clutch-specialists.co.uk/

I think Ash_p is using one of there fast road clutches, and he's running over 300bhp.

Hopefully they can supply and fit for me

Posted By: Flea

Re: Next North West Rolling Road Day - 21/02/09 - 15/02/2009 22:43

Hmmm, as you know it was slipping a bit on the day you picked it up frown On the positive side it only started slipping after the remap, likely a symptom of more torque. If you go for a CG clutch then make sure it is the competition clutch as the fast road won't last as long.

Re: Next North West Rolling Road Day - 21/02/09 - 15/02/2009 22:51

Leighton, it seemed to be ok, until saturday when i started to get masses of slip in any gear above 3rd.
Its all your fault for making my car run so well! wink

I have to admit I wasn't expecting it to go as i was told by the previous owner it had just been upgraded to a paddle clutch. Clearly not a very good one.

Its just the timing thats unfortunate as i was really looking forward to getting some figures.

Oh well, easy come, easy go.

@Johna, i also assume its a Fiat coupa on there website!!

Re: Next North West Rolling Road Day - 21/02/09 - 16/02/2009 09:56

Well if you don't manage to get it changed it may still be worth going to the dyno as they run the coupes in 3rd gear. The chances are it won't slip as the rollers don't load the transmission/engine as much as the road, unless it's slipping really bad that is.

Re the CG competition clutch, I think Ash said it was rated to 340lbs/ft.

My graph from last time said they ran it in 4th gear, just for info. Could have been a typo tho tongue

Re: Next North West Rolling Road Day - 21/02/09 - 16/02/2009 12:34

They've always ran mine in 3rd. Anyway, that is not an issue as i am taking my car to C G clutches this afternoon for a replacement clutch. Have gone for the "competition clutch" rated @ 325 torques for £590+vat supplied and fitted.

Re: Next North West Rolling Road Day - 21/02/09 - 16/02/2009 19:31

not a bad, price i will have to buy one soon.. clutch is slipping in 1st and 2nd when i put the foot down.. (only got it replaced last year!) dunno if it has anythng with little boost spike i have got or my greddy is set up wrong.

anyway, did you know that the sxoc is calling the coop an Italian Scrabble? curse laugh

According to the SXOC site they have 6 X 200's running on the day and a couple of "others" to be tacked on at the end of the day.

Should still be a good day and some of our members can probably get on the rollers a bit earlier. smile

My one has chirped on cold and damp morning since I did the aux belt, stops within about 1 second so I expect it will go away, similar sound to what I had immediately after Rog did my belts in the summer and that quietened down gritty fast.

Misfire: could be time for new plugs but cold plugs will fowl easier in the cold weather.

Re: Next North West Rolling Road Day - 21/02/09 - 21/02/2009 16:13

Well - I reckon this will start yet another dyno discussion

Despite having posted very close to 400bhp at Powerstation at the end of January, I'm now down to 326bhp (276 @ wheels).

I'm really not at all sure about Dyno demon's methods - both mine and Lucifer's cars suffered clutch slip on the rollers 9they ran it in 3rd gear). My Helix organic is perhaps 20,000 miles old and never slips on the road (I used 1.8 bar on the way up there). Lucifer's Helix Organic was fitted by Motormech three weeks ago. Go figure.

I asked them to run mine in 4th, but it then span the wheels slightly, which will have contributed to the lack of power.

However, other cars made the expected power - MABR was spot on and a couple of other near-standard Coupes gave 220 - 230 bhp

So - are they loading the rollers more or is it simply a case of different rollers, different day, different results?

EDIT - Having said all that, I've just checked my Powerstation graph, and I ran 287 @ wheels, so maybe there isn't that much difference after all.

Re: Next North West Rolling Road Day - 21/02/09 - 21/02/2009 16:45

For FWD, I always allow 15%-20% losses, so your 326bhp Nigel, looks spot on.
I always thought RR's tend to give higher figures, then true road power.Again, its down to the accuracy of the RR, and the percentage losses through transmission, tyres etc, that the operator decides is warranted.
But I am seeing time and again on this site, that our humble Coupe has good and bad days. Figures seem to go up and down like a yoyo, even on the same rollers!! Very strange! crazy

276@wheels 326@fly is still not right IMHO

my plots

click to enlarge click to enlarge

it also bugs me about the rev scale - I was told that they ran my car to 7,000rpm, but the plots stop at around 6000rpm - I know its just a calibration anomaly, but it means that I can't use my graph to work out accurately where the turbo is spooling, where the fuelling is richening up etc

Re the results, I really cant comment for your cars, but for 200's, Dynodemon have always been pretty much spot on when compared to other Dynodynamics RR's for the 3 shootouts we've had there... obviously all compared in Shootout mode smile

Its running the standard ebv along with a PVR to prevent boost spikes.
I'm thinking about getting it set up by flea but want to get the suspension refreshed first (although its not really bad atm to be honest best one I drove handling wise when I was searching) and get the injectors cleaned just to be sure one isn't lean or anything like that.
Its running about 1.1 ish bar.

Do as Nigel said get some carb cleaner and spry it at the pipe see if you have a vacuum leak.
A bit more boost in the mid range may sort out the rich running, but that may go away once the boost spike is reduced.

If you look between the intake plem and the block you wills see 5 short pipes these are what nigel talked about.
Also check the pipe to your boost gauge is secure, the pipe to the dump vale and pretty much pipe between the maf and the plem.

I popped in for an hour or so, stayed till just after the big power/very loud sx was run and had to go.
There was 1 very nice sprinty there with recaro seats and a zender kit i think, just wondered whos was it. It has to be the nicest coupe ive seen.
Also is it a cada spoiler on the back, I only just caught a glimpse of it as it was leaving.

An interesting day, First time I've even set foot in a RR garage. Once my car is all sorted properly I would be down for taking part in one of these runs. Wouldn`t it of been better if the bhp values written on the board included bhp at the wheels as that would be a comparable figure for both sx and coupes and a proper comparison could be made between the two.

Thanks again to MABR for organising this meet. And thanks to Nigel for diagnosing my chattering problem on start up - that's another reason for going to these meets, to get expert advice on running problems - as well as the social banter.

I would have been gutted to not run the car after driving all that way - so was quite pleased with my 233.9 bhp as I can now sell it with proof of this. I also got some invaluable advice about the current status of the engine i.e. it's still boosting a tad high & is running a bit lean - so I know what needs to be done to sort that out in future.

Pop me down for the next run Craig - not sure what I'll be driving at that time, but I may still have the Coupe!

Anyone that likes the monamobile - PM me if you are interested.

Re: Next North West Rolling Road Day - 21/02/09 - 22/02/2009 11:43

Thanks to everyone for supporting this - we did get our backsides kicked by the SX's but that was just a bit of friendly Club banter as well as putting an interesting twist on the day. smile

I've listened and read what people have to say about differences in RR's and tbh this always happens after a day like this. To that end, I've agreed to run another North West RR Day at an alternative venue in about 6 weeks time. Hopefully this will be on a set of Dastek rollers for comparison purposes.

The quarterly North West RR Days will (hopefully) continue at Dyno Demon (May will be the next one) as I feel the venue and service are second to none. Steve at DD knows that I'm looking at a comparison day and is fine with that.

As for myself, apologies for not spending as much time with people as I'd've liked - still nowhere near 100% healthwise (a few people asked if I knew my lips were blue smile ) but hopefully getting there. It was a cracking result for me at 259 with the spec below and perfect fuelling. Last time I was there I ran 253 with a fmic, Gtech2 and a Greddy EBC. I've still got to get a K&N panel filter fitted and have the throttle cable replaced (51 degrees with no adjustment left) so hopefully a bit more still to come.

Thanks to SteA at SXOC for sorting things at his side and thanks yet again to Steve, Luke and the gang at Dyno Demon for a smooth day with excellent service. I'll post up a seperate thread about the alternative RR venue as soon as I have confirmation. smile

Re: Next North West Rolling Road Day - 21/02/09 - 23/02/2009 10:04

Just to carry on from what Nigel was saying, I'm not really sure what went wrong with mine. Apparently the clutch was slipping from just under 4,000 revs, at which point it was producing around 305lbs/ft torque (262bhp), but I'm scratching my head as to how this is possible - given that I had a brand new Helix Organic clutch fitted by Motormech 3 weeks ago (and yes, it was the full kit tongue )

On my way home I did a few tests, uphill in 6th etc etc and I really cannot feel even an ounce of slip, so I'm baffled as to what the issue was.

I'm going to book in to a different roller just for a second opinion, and if they say the same thing then I'll go back to Motormech to diagnose the problem. I'm not too worried about it though, the car is running great smile

I thought that due to the way bhp was calculated it was always 5250 or the graphs were wrong, as there are numerous ways operaters can boost or reduce readouts?!

Im not too up on this, also isnt the reason they run in forth as its the closest to direct drive?

The RR day is for a power run, not a 20 minute slot, you (FCCUK) put it down as time slots as it normally takes that long/you wanted them, cross out as appropriate. I never put down time slots as they are always on the ball at DD unlike many other RR's we've been to..... They also take quite a bit of time to explain and help where they can, but they arent there to fix problems on a day like that, even if they do frequently. smile

And power figures are going to be down compared to many, its a dynodynamics RR in shootout mode and gives realistic figures smile

Just looking at Nigel's results.

He got 287 bhp at powerstation and 276 bhp at Dyno Demon, as he said.

Surely it cannot be a coincidence that these figures are so close?

If they are both correctly measured then clearly the method of working out transmission losses between the 2 different kinds of rollers is massively different.

I suppose though that it could quite easily be coincidence, but still, odd

Re: Next North West Rolling Road Day - 21/02/09 - 24/02/2009 17:24

Matt - I thought that as well - its entirely possible that I have circa 280bhp @ wheels, but which one is the correct flywheel figure?

I don't suppose it makes a lot of difference, as the wheel power is what drives the car, but I'd like to know

I'll be putting it on a Dastek dyno in April, so it will be interesting to see what that comes up with (won't have done any more mods, so I'll run the same boost as well, just for consistency of results)

Re: Next North West Rolling Road Day - 21/02/09 - 27/02/2009 08:30

Hi Nigel,

One thing I need to say, I don't buy those figures of yours smile .
There are quite a many things which are against them:
your setup, your boost rate and your 1/4 Mile results.
They are all speaking more or less 400 bhp or more.

About the boost, in your graph it shows that you used boost of some 1.6 bar in RR run and you have "only" given some 330 lb-ft (447 Nm). With that amount of boost I have had with GT28RS and my friend even with GT28R torque of +345 lb-ft (+470 Nm).
Wheel spin I understand very well, because the RR where were use to visit need to run our cars with fifth gear just because there is no wheel grip with lower gears. The dyno is Bosch FLA 206 and it is based on inertia.
So the dyno run with third gear or fourth might have caused the situation, which is normal for example in slippery road, straight after the grip is lost the boost goes down. Maybe this was the reason for so early stop in RR.

There is possible for the boost leak, which I did have in my last +400 bhp RR session. Look the curves in "My Coupe Project" by hani, I have posted my graph there with couple of pictures of the broken hose.

The 1/4 mile terminal speed, your terminal speed of +115 mph is way higher than what can be reached with 326 bhp! I never could go faster than 109 - 111 mph with three times measured app. 350 bhp setup. Same data speaks the given results in "Hall of Fame" form the cars app. 320 - 340 bhp.

So, don't give up smile . There will be a proper RR some where, which is calibrated right and gives you the "real" curves. And I bet that next 1/4 mile run gives you the truth by terminal speed, what is the power level you should stand.

Re: Next North West Rolling Road Day - 21/02/09 - 27/02/2009 15:47

I have noticed, that Dynos that cause a lot of slip etc, are ones that use two rollers. Single rollers eliminate this, as the tyre sits ontop, as opposed to sitting on the side of the roller. See this;-
http://www.tracknroad.com/
This RR, is considered by many to be the most accurate RR in the country. Its why so many race cars are set up on it!
Only real way to eliminate any errors, is to use a Hub Dyno .
